from day to month to year— the same walk to s c h oo 1, same classes, same faces, same build- ings, same cups of dishpan coffee at the same unstable tables. a year, two, three, four between morn- ingside and river- side — walking on cobblestones, run- ning across black- top, scuffing ce- ment, grass, wood, in and out, out and in— doors, trains, windows, up and down, down and up —stairs, elevators, fire escapes. a pigeon, a dog, a friend, leaning against ivy walls, brick walls, beer washed down, money paid out. in- volvement, apathy, bad jokes, sched- ules. smelly stale butts, empty foam- caked mugs. only we grow, we change.
