Rosemary Park, president The way to greater understanding is the ability to respect others. We know what to respect through knowledge and knowledge comes through education, President Rose- mary Park stated, stressing the importance of education in her first address to students, faculty and administration. The former president of Connecticut Col- lege was greeted with two standing ovations from her audience when she officially as- sumed the presidential duties on November 15, 1962. Her infinite curiosity, never-ending stream of questions and close contact with under- graduates enabled Miss Park to quickly gain an excellent understanding of all facets of Barnard. Miss Park sees housing as one of the College ' s major questions. What do the stu- dents want? What is a residence program supposed to accomplish? Is it just for shelter or is it a part of the educational environ- ment? she asks. The Barnard student body must be kept national in character, she em- phasizes. Miss Park views the rising cost of higher education as a problem that will soon affect all students. She stresses the need to bring students and faculty together on matters that are of concern to both groups. To facilitate more independent study and study in depth, Miss Park proposes the in- stitution of a four-course system and of a reading period. Miss Park views the years ahead as vital to the growth of Barnard. We view the years ahead with confidence and optimism, for we are convinced that Barnard is in capable and sensitive hands.
