barnard in new york The ivory tower of pedantry is an obsolete building on the Barnard cam- pus — dwarfed, one might say, by the sky- scrapers of New York, which stand as constant reminders that there is a life beyond the Green Gate. Opposed to the static world of books is the ever-changing world of the city; in contrast to the theoretical world of ideas is the practical world of people. New York constantly brings to one ' s at- tention and concern the real world and insistently reminds Barnard students of their relationship to that world. What of the Barnard girl who wants to be a creative writer? Every type and every mood exists in New York City: silent, staring subway-riders; elegant, aloof Bergdorf-shoppers; friendly, funny school children with their disconcerting youthful independence; lonely, mis- placed Village wanderers. With a little imagination and a lot of observation, situations and characters cannot help but spring to mind. Majoring in government, a Barnard student can gain contacts, experience,

and awareness: by working for the local political party, attending night court, or working for voter registration, she can see, first-hand, government in action. Even as New York City is the exten- sion of the professional and academic life of the average Barnard student, so does New York City provide cultural en- richment and excellent entertainment to brighten her extra-curricular life: Don Giovanni at the Met, Picasso ' s Guer- nica at the Museum of Modern Art, Pirandello off-Broadway, Shakespeare in the Park, Bernstein at the Philharmonic, and medieval tapestries at the Cloisters. Maybe it ' s the tangible cultural, so- cial, and vocational offerings that make New York so attractive. Maybe it ' s just the secret silent thrill in knowing that if you ' ve got to stay up until 3:30 a.m., somewhere, someone is up with you. Maybe it ' s just curiosity overcoming pro- vincialism as you peek into the imagined lives of the strangers about you. Whatever it is that has caught you, it ' s in New York, the city that has en- riched Barnard and its students.
