DEDICATION President Millicent Carey Mcintosh The past fifteen years at Barnard have seen many changes and much progress under the guidance of President Millicent Mcintosh. As Barnard improved its academic facilities and kept pace with modern educational de- velopments, Mrs. Mcintosh was there to direct and coordinate with wisdom and understanding. During her tenure as Dean, and then as the first presi- dent of Barnard in 1952, we have seen the introduction of pre-professional programs in education and social sciences, the Barnard-Columbia union of physics, mathematics, religion, music, and language departments, and the establishment of such helpful systems as the class advisory program, whereby each student receives individual guidance throughout her college career. We have seen new buildings sprout and flourish, as the new Lehman-Wollman Library and the Helen Reid Hall. We have grown as Barnard has grown, looking always to President Mcintosh for guidance and advice. Mrs. Mcintosh ' s personal achievements have been ample proof of her conviction that a woman can successfully coordinate marriage with a career. While raising a family of five children, Mrs. Mcintosh has not only played a key role in the development of higher education, but has also taken an active leadership in such education and community projects as the Morn- ingside Housing Corporation, the Institute of International Education, arid the CBS Foundation. The success with which President Mcintosh has per- formed this dual role as educator and mother has been a source of inspira- tion for us at Barnard who aspire to both the domestic and professional. It reflects the belief of a woman who once said that learning alone is not enough; it must be used with wisdom to make living creative and effective. In June of 1962, President Millicent Mcintosh will retire. During her fifteen years as Barnard ' s Dean and President, she has received many medals and honors as an outstanding woman and educator. We at Barnard would like to add to these awards our own expression of deep appreciation and gratitude. The most lasting, and personally rewarding, tribute that we can pay to this pioneer in American education is to continually strive to fulfill the stringent, yet satisfying, requirements which she has set up as guideposts for our academic careers. It is as a result of her inspiring efforts that we shall emerge from Barnard as mature young women capable of meeting the challenges of modern society.
