Directorship of College Activities at Barnard was the concluding role in the busy and varied career of Miss Katherine R. Goodwin. Miss Goodwin came to Barnard after distinguishing herself in the field of education as well as in the armed services during the war. After receiving a B.S. degree from Russell Sage College, Miss Good- win continued her education at the University of Connecticut, the University of Chicago, and the International People ' s College in Denmark. In 1923 she began teaching and continued to do so until the war interrupted, and in 1 942 Miss Goodwin left Weaver High School to join the Women ' s Army Corps. By 1944 she had attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. She served on the staff of Col. Oveta Culp Hobby and as WAC officer for the Army Service Forces on the staff of the late Lieut. Gen. Brehon B. Somervell. She was awarded the WAC medal and was one of the few women to receive the Legion of Merit for her service. It was during her service with the WACS that Miss Goodwin met Jean Palmer, then a WAVE, at a White House reception given by Mrs. Roosevelt. When, at the end of the war, Miss Goodwin returned to Weaver as Dean of Girls, she and Miss Palmer kept in touch via Christmas cards. Christmas 1955 brought news to Miss Palmer of her friend ' s imminent re- tirement from Weaver, with a request for information of interesting openings in New York. Miss Palmer returned news of an opening in the Barnard College Activities Office, and thus Miss Goodwin came to Barnard. Students at Barnard remember the devotion, interest and skill which Katherine Goodwin brought to her job. She drew on a long experience in dealing with students; she exhibited an understanding of their ambitions and their problems. Her job included every non-academic phase of student life. During her six years at Barnard there were few who did not consult at some time with Miss Goodwin, either about social events, commuter problems, off-campus housing, or assembly fines. She died on September 26th, two days before the beginning of the seventy-third year of the college she had served so well. We, the class of 1962, will remember her, for she was an integral part of our college experi- ence. Funeral services were held at St. Paul ' s chapel, and the Undergraduate Association established the Katherine R. Goodwin Memorial Scholarship Fund, a fitting tribute to a woman who gave so much of her energies to the field of education.
