Foreword It is traditional for those of us who are graduating seniors to take that last, long look backward to appraise the influence college has had upon our lives. We inevitably find that we are heavily in debt to our wise, inspirational teachers. We are deeply grateful to them for many things, particularly for the understanding and appreciation they impart to us of the creative process. This gives us added insights to the world of today and prepares us to make our own contributions to modern living. We know that the acquisition of facts is only the first step in the education of an individual. Most of us pass through a period of inner confusion when we question what we have learned. Eventually, we come to think in the terms of the theories we previously questioned. Then we are again ready to increase and enhance our factual knowledge. And so the spiral goes on and on. Somewhere along the way, some of us may perceive a disunity in the web of theories in our own field of interest. This sudden perception may be the beginning of what can truly be called a creation. In the following pages we want to show how this creative process operates in furthering scientific knowledge as well as in deepening our perceptions in the areas of study we call the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Barnard College becomes our laboratory for four years. Our campus, the neighborhood and the teachers around us act as catalysts to stimulate the exchange and development of ideas among the students. From these ideas can come our small, but, perhaps, significant contribu- tion.
