Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1955 volume:

l Vjortarbociri presents 3 edication As Advisor to the Class of 1955 you have guided us through our four decisive years of college. In ap- preciation for your sincere interest, your warm and friendly disposition, your understanding of our prob- lems and your helpfulness in solving them, the Senior Class dedicates this book to you. 4 Miss Marianna Byram, Advisor to the Class of 1955 many reasons, most of which in- volve the innumerable aspects of New York City. We come for the unique educa- tional advantages offered by this metropolitan college — renowned professors, extensive libraries and timely studies — all supplemented by the theaters, museums and scientific laboratories of this city. e select our fundamental in- terests from the variety of opportunities Bar- nard and New York afford. To study or to play, to be alone in a crowd or to be part of that crowd, to look beyond ourselves or to remain egocentric: these are some of the problems we face. We are influenced in our decisions by the advice, friendship and example of the people we meet. Barnard provides the common ground to which these people come, enriching their heritage by the exchange of ideas and cultures. Both in college and out, we discover those outlets for self-expression in edu- cation and in social activities which help contribute to the formation of our individual patterns of life. 10 Millicent C. Al- though the exterior was the same . . . the dignified iron gates in front of Barnard Hall, the stone benches along the paths, the ivy on the columns . . . the interior had been mod- ernized. Three gleaming brass doors replaced the impractical single door at the entrance of Milbank. Entrance to Milbank Hall 1 r 1 Barnard Hall in Spring The atrocious friezes along the stairways, no longer regarded as fine art, had been defty removed. Classroom walls were bright- ened by cheerful yellows, blues and mauves, fluorescent lighting and even green black- boards! Seminar rooms were equipped with attractive, modern tables and chairs, and — at last — enough ashtrays for the chain smokers. To meet the demands of day students, lounges were furnished with functional comfortable chairs and sofas. The outstand- ing accomplishment in this department was the transformation of the dingy Barnard Hall cafeteria into the sunny James Room. Gay linoleum, blonde wood tables beautiful chairs upholstered in eye-catching colors and a radio-phonograph console were part of the miracle. Now Barnard commuters have a cheery spot to meet their fellow stu- dents and to bring their men friends. The first floor of the residence halls was refurbished and refurnished Beau parlors became more homey with the fitting of pale green Ven- etian blinds to blend with the newly-decorat- ed rooms. Faculty were also included in the renovat- ing plans. The fourth floor of Barnard Hall was converted to a house the Eng lish depart- ment. The dark crevices of Milbank ' s base- ment were brightened and new offices created to accomodate the growing staff. Entrance to Barnard Campus Miss Helen M. I think it is a generally accepted and self- evident fact that human discord is not only the product of conflicting interests but is just as fundamentally due to an ignorance of one anothers ' cultures, which leads to lack of understanding. The ideal purpose of international student exchange is to reach the point where humanity is a unit no part of which is incomprehensible to another. It is hoped that exchange students will take home not only the academic and technical knowledge taught them by their hosts, but 32 Representative Jacob Javits admires his campaign poster placed on Jake by M. Such a unity may dwarf barriers which many people today consider insuperable. It is the duty and responsibility of every national or international body, of every educational institution, and of every individual to establish contact with differing minds and to broaden the scope of vision of all people. This is the only foundation on which world peace can stand firm. For I am a giddy elasmobranch (Though bereft of my caudal fin), And to plague the ladies who cut me dead Could scarcely be deemed a sin. So while his helpless victims drew His systems ' one by one, He waxed more strong in his deadly might With the passing of each day ' s sun. And their cheeks grew pale as bit by bit They carved at the dogfish grim, For carving had no repressive effect On what there was left of him. The weary days dragged slowly by — With forks that class ate bread, If they took the windward side of a friend That friend, instanter, fled, Till naught was left of the dogfish bold Save a blithe, expansive smile, And a brain, the source of some score of nerves And full of exceeding guile. But the smile waxed broad as his victims walked Shunned, outcast, down the street; And at last, as the small boy swept him up ( He murmured, Revenge is sweet. G. H. Obviously the entire class misunderstood the assignment, Dr. Milton growled as he tried to banish from his mind ' s eye the thirteen other reports which his young assistant, Mr. Horton, held shakily in his hand. Dr. Milton ' s chair complained loudly as he sat up suddenly and pointed to the discarded report on his desk. Just what was the topic supposed to be? Anthropologists A. Stofer ' 56 and A. Beck ' 56, visit the Mayan exhibit on a field trip to the American Museum of Natural History. ' Twentieth Century Philosophy, sir. Quite liberal in her interpretation, eh, Mr. Horton? Quite, sir, replied the young teacher. Well sir, I suppose I should destroy the others. Squawk: You mean the students? Oh no, sir — the papers. They all seem to be quite ' liberal ' . Have a seat, Mr. Horton. Now then, you hadn ' t been with us too long when you sug- gested this field trip to the City of New York for the girls of our freshman class. At first I couldn ' t quite picture such an outing as an integral part of our college curriculum. But, when you suggested we supplement the trip with written reports, your idea became aca- demically sound. Thank you, sir. I ' m not finished, thank you! As I was say- ing, your idea was very sound until you came up with these reports. Mr. Horton, when a stu- dent titles her paper, Histology and Histologi- cal Methods, I expect a treatise on organic tissue and not on City Prison. City Prison, Dr. Milton? Cells, Mr. Horton! Oh yes, of course, I ' d forgotten that one. But here ' s one that comes fairly close, Doctor Milton, the one on Arthur Murray and Ameri- can Social Classes. And this girl spent all day at Carnegie Hall. It got so late that she almost missed the bus back to campus, so she didn ' t have too much time to spend on her report. As a matter of fact, it ' s the most concise of them all. She chose to write on Musical Expression of the Ideals of Western Culture. lust what did she say, Mr. Horton? Solid. Doctor Milton, solid! Now, wait a minute. This looks as if it might be a pretty good one: Theory of Functions of Complex Variables. You won ' t like that one, either, Doctor Mil- ton, although it is fashioned after Kinsey — something about the human male and eleva- tor operators at the Empire State! There was another like that wasn ' t ' here something about Nuclear Physics in New York City? Oh, yes sir. That discussed the nature of Adams . Also, someone went to Ellis Island to study Foreign Relations, but she couldn ' t find any. Dr. Milton, I suppose you should know that at the end of the day we went as a group to Yonkers Raceway — Probability Theory? I can see we accom- plished very little with your field trip, Mr. Horton. And as your supervisor I find that I cannot rate this experiment as highly success- ful. It seems to me we can find little use for such reports. You see, in the college curricu- lum, humor has no — The phone rang. Yes this is Doctor Milton. Certainly, I would be glad to speak at the Governor ' s Dinner for Educators. The topic is what? Would you re- peat that please? Hmm-m ... I see . . . Thank you. Goodbye. Now Mr. Horton, where was I? Oh ( yes. As I was saying, there is no room for humor in the college curriculum. However (pause- squeak), if I may keep these reports for just a few days, I may be able to find points which may help me to judge this experiment in a more favorable light. That is all, Mr. Horton. On his way out, Mr. Horton stopped at Dr. Milton ' s secretary ' s desk and cautiously in- quired, If I ' m not being too nosy ; Miss Hazel, just what is Doctor Milton going to speak about at the Governor ' s Dinner? Oh, I don ' t believe it would do any harm to tell you, Mr. Horton. The Governor ' s secre- tary just phoned and gave him the topic: Field Trips Can Be Fun. Why Mr. Horton, whatever can be so hilarious? Marshalling the forces during the two-minute lull before a 9:00 a. m. In honor of Professor Minor La- tham, Professor of the Drama at Bar- nard for 34 years, the theater has be- come the Minor Latham Drama Work- shop. The Workshop is a logical outgrowth of Barnard ' s diversified Drama courses in which is used the workshop method of teaching — a tradition established by Miss Latham. It is indeed fitting that the new workshop should be named in honor of the first lady of the Barnard theater. The internal structure of the old playhouse was reversed to afford good vision from all sections of the or- chestra and balcony, while at the same time allowing for wing and backstage space to accomodate elaborate equip- ment. The official opening of the Workshop took place October 14 ; 1954, with a re- ception and one-act play presented by the Associate Alumnae of Barnard, and Wigs and Cues. A month later the Workshop group ' s first full-length pro- duction, Strindberg ' s There Are Crimes and Crimes, was presented. To become the undergraduate drama center of the campus community is the goal of the Workshop, and judging from the num- ber and variety of plays thus far pro- duced, that goal is in sight. 40 Pianissimo, please 1 Maestro B. Vo ll ocauona erence Barnard students took a day off from reg- ular classes on December 1, 1954 to attend the college ' s second vocational conference. On the theme of Working with a Liberal Arts Degree ( the all-day session stressed the relationship of the liberal arts to a wide variety of professional and non-professional careers. Keynoting the conference was Dr. Mar-gar - et Mead B ' 23, Associate Curator of the A- merican Museum of Natural History and Ad- junct Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University. After Miss Mead ' s talk, the stu- dents attended two of a variety of panel discussions designed to include many dif- ferent careers. Sessions dealt with working with people, language, politics, and the physical and biological sciences, as well as working overseas, in the business world, and in the field of performing arts. The conference gave students a much clearer insight into the value of a liberal arts education and its practicality in the pro- fessional world. R. Feuerstein ' 55, practise teaching at P. However, the college also performs a definite service to the University community and even, in a wider sense, to the American commun- ity. This is amply illustrated by Term Drive, WKCR radio station, various pro- fessional clubs, and individual girls whose extra-curricular activities in- clude work in church Sunday Schools and settlement houses in Manhattan. We came with all the prerequisites for a happy and successful venture: camel ' s hair coat, white bucks, bobby sox, yellow slicker, strapless formal, and oh yes, a pad and pencil with which to take some notes. As our first year came to an end, our at- tire underwent slight changes. In admiration for the K-9s of America, we cropped our locks in the poodle cut. We sophs attended classes in pedal pushers and sweaters. The need for more than a pad and pencil was recognized; now standard supplies for class were a ream of paper attached. to a clip board, a ballpoint pen, and several weighty books, among them very likely The Com- plete Works of William Shakespeare. Then too, there were transformations in our crazy mixed-up speech. In fact, one professor began his lecture with the follow- ing bit of American wit: Two bebop individuals, experiencing pangs of hunger, entered a restaurant in order to partake of a morsel of nour- ishment. The trend of the conversation ran along the se lines — 100 ALICE BILGREI International Relations Bebopper A: I ' d like some apple pie. Waitress: The apple pie is gone, sir. Bebopper B: Man, I ' ll have some o ' that crazy gone pie too! Sophomore year passed, and so did pedal pushers — passed the knee, that is. We en- tered our Junior year wearing Bermuda shorts, a man-tailored shirt, and knee-length argyles, hand knit of course. The camel ' s hair coat and the once-white bucks were still with us. With the Condensations of Shake- speare ' s Plays in one hand and in the other a tote bag containing every item indispen- sable to the well-equipped college woman — knitting needles, wool, cigarettes and cards — the Barnard Junior wended her way across campus. International relations were pro- moted briefly this year by the Italian hair- cut, but Audrey Hepburn soon brought us back across the Atlantic. Now, as super-sophisticated seniors, we look back o those immature carefree days of our youth, and smile indulgently at the passing fancies we entertained. Her immeasurable capacity to listen sympathet- ically to the problems of students inspires their confidence in her, for Mrs. Stabenau feels that the need of the students to talk must be exploited. The best description of her duties as counselor comes from Mrs. Stabenau her- self. Occasionally I have to dampen the enthusiasm of some students, especially transfers and freshmen who are eager to overload their programs. In the middle of the term I usually have to do a bit of re- conciling and give girls permission to drop courses in order to ease their schedules. Students also come to me with more per- sonal problems, she remarked. Family difficulties often result when girls begin to be independent and assert their person- alities. Their parents do not realize that the rebellion is not frivolous but indicates a real need for experimentation. Sometimes students drop in just to say hello, Mrs. Stabenau continued, and while we talk, I discover problems. Of course, I know there are many shy girls who don ' t come and it is often they who have the greatest needs. I much prefer to have a girl come to me on her own initia- tive than to call her in myself, she ex- plained, because the girl who ventures in without having been summoned is more liable to reveal her real difficulties. This delicacy of approach is a rare gift and one which has always been appre- ciated in Mrs. Stabenau by others, and especially by the Class of ' 56. We first met Miss Carlson when, as bewildered freshmen, we approached her with our carefully planned programs before the beginning of school. She pointed out that perhaps History 3 would fit our individual needs better than History 9, or that it might be wiser to wait until Sophomore year to start a new lang- uage. Sometimes we accepted her sugges- tions with mixed emotions, forgetting that she knew the consequences of a disorgan- ized and overburdened freshman program better than we. Now, we are able to ap- preciate her foresight and are grateful for her advice. We met Miss Carlson socially at the Freshman Teas where we were given the opportunity to become better acquainted with our classmates and with our advisor. She would pass from group to group, matching names with faces and putting us at ease through her interest in our opinions and ambitions. Now that we are sophomores, we have passed that trying time. Problems still pre- sent themselves, however, and Miss Carlson is always available to give us the helpful advice we need. As one sophomore re- marked, She makes you feel that yours is the only problem, and it consoles you to know that someone is taking a constructive interest in your schoolwork. This philos- ophy? Well, Ellen sums it up in one word, patience — patience when facing the rushing throngs constantly late f o r class, patience with the agita- ted buzzer pushers, and pa- tience as a harried dorm stu- dent pants into the elevator only to discover that she must return for some essential item. Disturbing as these aspects of the job would be to most of us, Ellen attributes them, all to youthful exuberance and merely smiles quietly. The unique moments she shares with each successive bevy of undergrads seem to compensate for any unmen- tioned annoyances. It ' s really fun, for me, she says, to watch the girls open their mail. Often she catches a glimpse of the look of delight when a special letter arrives, or hears the sigh of relief that welcomes the check from home. Perhaps, however, her most prized moments are the seconds of suspense that ac- company an impatient belle on her way to an equally impa- tient date. Indeed, Ellen herself might be mistaken for one of the stu- dents were it not for her gray uniform, for she stands only shoulder high. Improbable as it seems, she is nevertheless the mother of a grown daugh- ter. This fact casts a bit of light upon Ellen ' s sympathetic attitude toward students, for she claims, Since I raised a daughter in New York City, it ' s easy for me to understand the way city girls think. Each year he is accosted with such phrases as Come guickly, there are two inches of wa- ter around my bed! or Smoke is positively billowing down our hall! On closer sur- veillance the major flood generally turns out to be a minor case of faulty plumbing, while the raging conflagration stems from a single wastepaper basket that has been drafted as a temporary ashtray.
