l Yjan A $iffkt to J r now is the theme of the bicentennial anniversary which Columbia University will observe next year. The principle is not a new one for the institution. Since 1754, when King George II of England granted the original charter to King ' s College, its students and teachers have lived and worked in an atmosphere of free inquiry and discussion. They have learned to regard it as the natural right of all men, and are, today, pleading for the universal recognition of this idea. We, at Barnard, know how important this is. Our 53 years of close association with the schools across the street, and the conduct of education inside our own green gate, have taught us the value of intellectual freedom. In presenting this yearbook, the Class of 1954, the bi- centennial class, joins with its older brothers and sisters of the Col umbia family in affirming the principle, and cele- brating the occasion, of the two-hundredth anniversary of our venerable university.
