The Athletic Association enables the student to participate in organized recreation. This year A.A. has sponsored many exciting events. There have been inter-class competitions, inter- collegiate playdays, faculty-student basketball and volleyball games, barbecues, picnics, square dances and weekends at Barnard Camp. One of the special highlights of this year was the Water Ballet. The story of a snowball that had no bounce was the theme of this colorful event. The New York State Athletic Federation of College Women held their Conference at Bar- nard during November and December of this year. The topic for discussion was The Rela- tion and Value of the Athletic Association to the Community. The aim of the Physical Education Depart- ment is threefold. Its program is concerned with health and recreation as well as with physical skills. The varied curriculum provides a wide selection of activity for the student whatever her interests and abilities may be. Act I Scene v Assemblies Assemblies are the only real chance for all the college to meet together . . . and they ' re a direct introduction to organiza- tions and people whose activities are of interest to us because they impinge on un- dergrad doings . . . This year Professor Commager of Columbia set the stage for unafraid pursuit of knowledge and expres- sion of ideas . . . We heard the famous theologian Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr, a dy- namic personality in many organizations of UN . . . During Barnard ' s Term Drive Dr. Frederick Patterson, president of Tuskegee Institute, explained how necessary was our wholehearted aid to the cause of universal education . . . Mrs. Lillian Gilbreth gave us a kind of advanced Modern Living lecture. Of course, college meetings allow us to catch up on strictly ' personal ' business . . . Dean ' s report (tuition up? tuition steady?) to us at the beginning of the semester — all those money matters, you know — why, we ' re as much in the know as the trustees . . . we receive visits from Barnard alumnae, who tell us all about the cold, cold world we ' re going to face . . . but with better tools because of our college training.
