Top: Exec Board: Holly Bradford ' 53. President Bottom: Three minutes to Curtain! f Act I Scene iv Wigs and Cues Wigs and Cues shares in the Problems and Joys of Professional Drama with as much Intensity as Mr. Olivier or Miss Web- ster — Barnard ' s own stock company strug- gles to determine the conflict between Good Theatre and What the Public Wants — Wigs and Cues must show the need of the col- lege for a Separate Dramatic Entity — Over- whelming Vote by members to strive for Semi-Pro status in the Dramatic World — minimum of Material, maximum of Devo- tion and Elbow Grease, sufficient Talent to make the mixture Highly Inflammable — sparked off by Leader of the Chorus Holly Bradford — the group turns out Smash Hit Hippolytus which attracts the Intelligentsia and also comes out in the Black! — But Wigs and Cues is too Solid an Institution to have been Daunted by Threats of Dissolution — If you ' ve ever melted that smelly Glue over a Bunsen burner — or swabbed Paint on washed-down canvas — or turned Mother ' s old Drapes into a seventeenth-century Vogue outfit — or attempted to Speak Ra- tionally to a member within two weeks of Production — or failed to Escape the Clutches of a frenzied Ticket-Seller — you ' ll know what we mean about Wigs and Cues — it ' s as solid as Barnard Itself. The play ' s the thing . . . No time for stage-fright

The Community Service Bureau strengthens Barnard ' s relation to Morningside Heights and surround- ing neighborhoods by placing volun- teers in hospitals, settlement houses and at piers to meet D. P.s. This year ' s Term Drive, chaired by Sue Everett, solicited funds for the United Negro College Fund and the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students. The col- lege was made aware of the hoped- for advances in the cause of higher education for Negroes. Act I Scene v Assemblies Assemblies are the only real chance for all the college to meet together . . . and they ' re a direct introduction to organiza- tions and people whose activities are of interest to us because they impinge on un- dergrad doings . . . This year Professor Commager of Columbia set the stage for unafraid pursuit of knowledge and expres- sion of ideas . . . We heard the famous theologian Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr, a dy- namic personality in many organizations of UN . . . During Barnard ' s Term Drive Dr. Frederick Patterson, president of Tuskegee Institute, explained how necessary was our wholehearted aid to the cause of universal education . . . Mrs. Lillian Gilbreth gave us a kind of advanced Modern Living lecture. Of course, college meetings allow us to catch up on strictly ' personal ' business . . . Dean ' s report (tuition up? tuition steady?) to us at the beginning of the semester — all those money matters, you know — why, we ' re as much in the know as the trustees . . . we receive visits from Barnard alumnae, who tell us all about the cold, cold world we ' re going to face . . . but with better tools because of our college training.
