MORTARBOARD BARNARD COLLEGE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY NEW YORK CITY is to most freshmen almost a mythical figure, but during his too brief stay on the Columbia campus his warm personality and friendly smile made him a well-liked figure at the University. His willingness to devote himself to new and difficult tasks led him to his present role in an interna- tional rather than a campus setting, and we know that he will receive as much ap- plause on the larger stage as he did on ours. tfiaifJQH ' KOl k. in the ab- sence of President Eisenhower, is acting head of Columbia University and has suc- cessfully taken over the numerous duties that this office demands. He is known as an educator, an author, and for his dis- tinguished work in Government service. To his new position at the helm of the Uni- versity he has brought all those ideals of scholarship which those who are in college strive to maintain. β JtRKARP COLLEGE- A v v.Β s 3 v ;-{. 43 really Mrs. Mac, is surely the most dynamic figure on campus. She serves as pattern and ideal for all our endeavors. As an educator, she symbolizes ever-broadening career possi- bilities for women, and has helped us both spiritually and intellectually to prepare for our future roles outside col- lege. As a homemaker she has given us a fine example of how the methods of academic learning can be applied to the workings of daily living. Enriched by her counsel, we are better able to face the problems of the world today with courage, faith, and optimism. PROLOGUE Aristotle said that the function of drama was to imitate nature. He meant by imitate not mere photographic reproduction, but to express the meaning, the essence, implicit in otherwise random or dis- organized sensations . We think that college has much the same pur- pose, and for this reason we liken our undergraduate years to a play. We believe that the aim of drama is in a sense the aim of college life. A play presents a world in miniature, of which the particular parts, such as plot, characterization, setting, need have no reference to actual situations outside the play; that is, they have an internal con- text. A play is the composition of an artist who has a specific purpose in writing, a definite idea to express; hence it is a means towards un- derstanding and does not have its end in its action. Since it is instru- mental, the structure of a play should contain no matter extrinsic to its end: it must highlight those aspects of nature or humanity which are pertinent to the idea behind the work. There is no attempt to present real life , life as it is lived, for that would be an agglomeration of undifferentiated elements, interrelated, it is true, but not all necessarily purposive or ordered by some end. It is the task of the artist to dispose the elements of nature into a functional pattern by stripping away the extraneous aspects so that the essence, the core of meaning, is that which the members of the audience take away from the play, that which they return to their daily lives as a working principle or intel- lectual attitude. The analogy to college life seems plain. Barnard too, is self- contained in regard to its particular parts, such as our form of student government, our academic reguirements, our library rules. Yet these have a larger meaning in virtue of their end: the imitation of life. Our pursuits at college do not mirror actuality: instead, from the or- dinarily diffused elements of life they distil the essence, the central meaning, which we are to apply in turn to our modes of living after college. Undergraduate activities served only to throw light on real life β they are a means to understanding what is to be lived when our term here is at an end. Just as a play attempts to choose certain ele- ments from the complexity of life in order to give to its audience a spe- cial attitude or feeling which it was the aim of the artist to enunciate, so college demonstrates to us by especially-designed procedures and practices those fundamental principles and intellectual tools which otherwise we would have to dissect out of the surrounding material of life. β N. E. A. Act I Scene i Orientation Program Plot: Barnard greets Freshman, Freshman meets Columbia . . . Freshman decides to stay. Hello, hello, hello β welcome, dear, wel- come to Barnard . . . With those girls! 8 Orientation Chairmen The Orientation program, the purpose of which is to acquaint the new student with the why and how of Barnard, the traditions and the idiosyncrasies of the college, en- compasses freshmen, transfers, and foreign students. The program begins with a week- end at the dorms for the neophyte, and an introduction to what are laughingly re- ferred to as ' Columbia men ' . The ubiquitous tea is part of the calendar of events β Foreign Students Tea, Interfaith β both of which are designed to introduce new stu- dents to their classmates and associates as is the luncheon. These functions attempt to instill in the incoming students an under- standing of the intangible spirit of Barnard. Opening assembly proffers the formal wel- come; the Dean ' s dinner for transfers and Fall Barbecue at Camp complete the initia- tion. After the students have had a taste of classes and an inkling of the amount of work they will have to do, the Student Activities Carnival aids in a wise choice of extra-curric. Members of the Pre-med Society spend much of their time touring city hospitals, and partaking in programs at Columbia College. The Debate Council office indi- cates the scope of travel and participation in interschool debates by that dynamic or- ganization. The Math Club ' s activities cen- ter on discussion of new theories presented by guest lecturers. The Poetry Club, newly chartered in November, reads and writes together and produces much of the ma- terial for Focus. The Eligibility Commit- tee, by its point evaluation of each stu- dent ' s extra curric, serves as a natural check on overburdened students. The Clubs Chairman has the job of coordinating the clubs ' activities, and receiving Student Council ' s approval of club charters, re- guired each year. We prefer to contei . . . Designers of the Future The primary concern of Political Council this year was internal reform oriented toward more representative government. To effect this change, PC divested itself of all legislative powers to pre- serve the purity of its administrative function. To further its aim of stimulating student interest in politics, PC conducted a straw poll to gauge the popularity of the candidates in the local City Council election. In March PC ran a primary on the major party tickets. When they learned of the expulsion of Alan Kimmel from the editorship of the Chicago U. Maroon because of his attendance at the Berlin Peace Rally, PC joined Bulletin in standing for academic freedom. They invited Kimmel to speak at Barnard, and while in disagreement with him, the Council was glad to provide the means of expression for his previously unpublicized opinion. After a vigorous but unsuccessful campaign to innovate election of representatives to the Council from the classes, PC turned its attention toward its annual conference, which was attended by dele- gates from many Eastern colleges. PC ' s other activities included acting through individual members and constituent clubs for Undergraduate constitutional reform, and the stimulation of varied interests on campus. Political is applied to the Council now only in the broadest sense. PC is no longer a mere coordinating body; it may better be called a student opinion council, since that is the area with which it is most concerned. P. We are all concerned about these problems, and we have a wide variety of student organizations which allow us to make verbal our hopes and fears. Debates, such as that on The United Nations and United Nations Security , spon- sored by the International Relations Club, provide us with well-informed speakers, and with information that may allay these fears or reinforce our optimism. Another internationally- minded group on campus is the United World Federalists. Special areas such as the troubled Middle East come under discussion in organizations like the In- tercollegiate Zionist Federation of Amer- ica. Groups interested in domestic prob- lems as well are the Young Republican Club and the Liberal Action Club. The latter is a non-partisan forum which en- courages diversity of opinion. There should be no dearth of debate, no si- lent generation in such an atmosphere. Top: Liberal Actions Club Bottom: Young Republican Club Activities Janice Donetz ' 53, President of U.W.F. International Relations Club 15 Joyce Hilleboe. Chairman, lntertaith Council Earl Hall, the center of campus spiritual activities, sponsors a religious organization for almost every major faith. The clubs aim at promoting friendship and fellowship among their members, and more important, they encourage a deeper understanding and awareness of religion as a dynamic factor in the lives of young people. The Interfaith Council coordinates the activities of the religious clubs and supple- ments them with activities of its own. Fore- most of these is the sponsori ng of a meeting for devotion and meditation every Thurs- day noon. These meetings are followed by lunch and discussion. Menorah aims to make Jewish students aware of their common cultural heritage, and to promote understanding and con- structive action concerning problems of the group in relation to world affairs, through a program of lectures, open house, and social activities. The Lutheran Club offers the Lutheran students of the university an opportunity to become acquainted with one another and with their religions through discussion and social meetings. The Barnard Com- mittee exists to introduce Barnard students to Lutheran Club activities. Religious Activities Top: Menorah; Bottom: Lutheran Club 16 The Canterbury Club, through lectures, discussions, and social activities, aims to encourage fellowship and an awareness of their religion among Episcopal students. Membership is open to all members of the University community. University Christian Association aims to promote fellowship among all those mem- bers of the University community who de- sire to understand the Christian faith and live the Christian life. An active group holds discussion groups, dances and other social events. There is an open house meeting every Thursday in Earl Hall. Newman Club brings together Catholic students in an informal relationship. Monthly meetings feature talks on religious topics, and every day there are opportuni- ties for meditation and prayer with other members of the group. Religious experi- ences are thus enhanced because they are shared with one ' s friends. On the lighter side are the socials held every week at Earl Hall, the luncheons, dances, and par- ties given throughout the year. New York City is a multiple-dimen- sioned field of exploration. As a large city, it offers the many cultural advantages of an intellectual center : libraries, museums, theatres, etc. As a cluster of com- munities, of which Morningside Heights is Barnard ' s own sphere. New York by its diversity adds to our education a richness not found in books. As the home of the U. N., New York is one of the capitals of the world. Look who ' s in the paper! Pigeon ' s eye-view . . Morningside Heights Though most Barnard girls are not old enough to vote, they take an active part in politics through courses such as Practical Politics as well as through the activities of Political Council. Straw balloting on Jake, and campaigning and canvassing throughout the neigh- borhood are but two aspects of the picture of campus political activities. Speakers Bureau provided the Public Relations Office with student guests for radio and TV programs, such as the television series, Horizons , produced by ABC and Columbia U., in which Barnard students, as well as other Uni- versity personnel, participated. In addi- tion, the Bureau sent representatives to many schools to speak on topics rang- ing from Civil Rights to Historical Geology. Barnard played at world politics when it served as Secretariat for the Model United Nations General Assem- bly, held on campus April 7, 1952. Top: Secretariat ot the Model U.N. This year A.A. has sponsored many exciting events. There have been inter-class competitions, inter- collegiate playdays, faculty-student basketball and volleyball games, barbecues, picnics, square dances and weekends at Barnard Camp. One of the special highlights of this year was the Water Ballet. The story of a snowball that had no bounce was the theme of this colorful event. The New York State Athletic Federation of College Women held their Conference at Bar- nard during November and December of this year. The topic for discussion was The Rela- tion and Value of the Athletic Association to the Community. The aim of the Physical Education Depart- ment is threefold. Its program is concerned with health and recreation as well as with physical skills. The varied curriculum provides a wide selection of activity for the student whatever her interests and abilities may be. Rep Assembly consists of the twelve members of Student Council, the presi- dent of Political Council and ten mem- bers from each of the four classes. Stu- dent Council is made up of the four Undergrad officers, the class presidents, the editor of Bulletin, the president of Athletic Association, the chairman of Honor Board, and the president of the Residence Halls. Act II Scene vii Step Singing The end of our play comes all too soon, perhaps, but some of our cast is anxious to test their talent in the cold light of day. The Finale is in the nature of a warm farewell. The supporting cast, all costumed in white, enters with the leading players who are clad in mature black. Each class chorus sings its part, and then the music swells as all unite in a final moving lyric. The leader of the senior class relinguishes her part to the understudy who has been chosen to play the role the following season. The entire chorus joins in a final song before they leave the stage for the last performance of the seniors. This time the stars receive their plaudits individually, and then together receive the congratulations of a devoted audience. The curtain falls on the Finale and the play is over. But for the stars this has been only the beginning. They have made their first public appearance after a long tryout run β now they will separate and go different ways β each one embarking on her own career. Finis ' Tomorrow holds a special wonder Time can ' t rend asunder Mem ' ries fashioned today. Tomorrow we will see its glory Patterned on the story We are living today. Moments passing, years betray The college dream is ours Let ' s claim it while we may. And Barnard, dear in recollection As she is in presence, Then shall not pass away. Tomorrow will be as bright as today. LADIES OF THE PRESS As the curtain goes down on activities at Barnard, the gals of the press set to work. Pencils fly and fingers speed over the typewriter keys as the thoughts and actions of Barnard students are permanently inscribed on paper for all the community to see. Throughout the Focus and the Bulletin offices on the second floor of the Barnard Hall Annex ring cries of Typewriter, please , Where ' s that piece of copy? , What ' s another word for ' describe ' ? and How do you spell Kouwenhoven? With the omnipresent spector of DEADLINE ever hovering above them, editors and staff alike get a frenzied look which belies their systematic approach to the news and views of the College. The show is over, the actors have gone home, but the critics and reporters, the Ladies of the Press, have just begun to record the show. Eliza Pietsch ' 52, Focus editoi in-chief Focus on Barnard The world of poetry and prose and the world of the Barnard College student come together on the pages of Focus. Subjects ranging from an economic interpreta- tion of Christmas to symbolic poetry all find their way into this thin (good things come in small packages) magazine. From Liza at the top down through the aspir- ing ' probie ' , the staff is concerned with describing the passing show and with putting the thoughts of their generation on paper. This is the way it ' s done. Focus staff 50 Nearly everyone in Barnard reads the Bulletin! Barnard Bulletin Twice a week Room 1 of the Annex hustles with the noise of a newspaper going to press. Aida, where ' s the pic for the spot one story? . . . Will 22 units fit into a 20 unit head? . . . Cut your story to four inches! . . . Tighten the lead on that story! . . . Palmer, College General Secretary Administration Officers Few of us ever forget our first glimpse of Barnard β that awesome sight of the Admissions Office and its staff. Miss Marian Smith ' s role β the selection of stu- dents β is surely one of the most important at Barnard, for her decisions determine the pattern of college life. Each class and the college as a whole must form an interactive, harmonious unit, which contributes as well as draws from the uniguely-blended character of our student body. After admission, the resident student is introduced to another member of the administration who, behind the scenes, helps to eliminate all snags in the functionings of Brooks and Hewitt Halls. Miss Harriet Bensen, sym- pathetic and friendly coordinator of Residence Halls activities and problems, helps to inculcate in her girls a mature sense of responsibility in regard to their daily living. Adeguate funds are always necessary for the smooth integration of both academic and extra-curricular activ- ities. Barnard students soon are made aware of the Barnard Fund, for its dynamic director. Miss Jean Pal- mer, makes every student know that the Fund is her own problem. Barnard Fund contributions help to im- prove existing plant facilities, to stabilize faculty and staff salaries, and to enable the college to present its prettiest face to a numerous audience. 56 Jake is one of the best beloved institutions at Bar- nard. As meeting place and center of all student activ- ity it has no counterpart in the college. On one side, Jake is dominated by Mrs. Florence Bridges and the Student Mail Office, where students make their first stop of the day. Here all local mail is delivered, be it notices of club meetings, academic appointments, li- brary warnings, job announcements, or just friendly notes. Besides being a postmistress par exceiience, Mrs. Bridges can answer most any guestion on the day ' s doings at Barnard. She acts as liaison between busy officers of the Undergraduate Association, and can tell you where to find anything from a teakettle to a prop for a play. Across from Mrs. Bridges ' office is the Student Affairs Office, presided over by Mrs. Martha English and Mrs. Joan Wettingfeld. This office gives the official seal to all activities, and aids students in making the extra- curricular system a smoothly-functioning and balanced one. Student Affairs Office also enables students to know of such cultural activities in New York City as concerts, plays, or radio broadcasts, and freguently se- cures reduced-rate tickets for the best performances. Directors of Student Affairs Mrs. Florence Bridges, Student Mail Mrs. Joan Wettingfeld, Asst. Director of Student Affairs Mrs. Martha English, Director of Student Affairs PRESENTING... i leading lady of the class of ' 53, is surely the most beloved, and the most versatile, member of the group. She skillfully handles the multiple char- acterizations of her role at Barnard. As Miss Eliot, she is a warm and understanding class advisor. In economics classes she is known as Professor Eliot, capable and popular. At the Junior Prom and other class functions, ' 53 was honored to have as its guest Mrs. Bruce Raup. At times Miss Eliot is almost a shepherd in her solicitude for her lambs : sociable teas at her home, cocoa and sandwiches at Junior Show dress rehearsals, and counsel for any personal problems, are all manifestations of the maternal spirit which moves her actions towards her class. Three hundred orchids to Miss Eliot for her wonderful performance! 58 . THE CAST ALICE AARONSON HELEN ADLER JUDITH L. ADLER Fine Arts Government History TESSIE AFENDULIS JOAN M.
