Text from Pages 1 - 156 of the 1952 volume:

r JL ift your pillared brow and statel On the city ' s morning roar, Feel these restless currents lately Swelling stronger than before. ( )tber floods must break below you Life renewed must course your springs. Barnard, wise and grave we know you, Young to urgent tilings. From our land you call your daughters Far from plain and wind scuffed tide. Cities reared by older waters Send their children to your side. Here to drink your vibrant power Here, by swept Atlantic foam, Lend us, Barnard, for an hour. Light to carry home. While you still love life and reason While you still shall hold to truth While each year ' s returning season Seals the pledge you gave to youth. Lift your light in fearless warning. Through the world of night and cloud, Barnard, rise upon the morning, Calm, and grave, and proud. 1952 MORTARBOARD h ' award College Columbia University, flew 1 ork City A T o Professor Gertrude J erity Rich we dedicate the 1952 Mortarboard. As teacher, advisor, and friend she has more than fulfilled her position as honorary member of the Class of 1952. In all of our endeavors she has given selflessly of her interest, time, and energy. Mrs. Rich has shared with us the experiences and memories which we have tried to capture in our book. It is with a profound sense of gratitude that we offer it to her as a measure of our appreciation. President and General, Dwight David Eisenhower combines the pioneering spirit of an educator with a soldier s keen sense of atcareness. Academic robes have been temporarily laid aside as the general assumes his unique position as Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Pact Nations. He brings to this great task the creative ability and steadfastness of purpose which have ever inspired our confidence in him. To Dean Millicent Carey Mcintosh we extend our firmest support in sharing with her a vision of a Barnard of ever-uidening scope in its opportunities for women— a Barnard directed toward the preparation of women for their roles in the future. To Mrs. Rustin Mcintosh who has so bridged the gap between the academic realm of idea and the world of dynamic forces ive give immeasurable gratitude for having matured under her guidance. Ci ft your Pillared ftrow and Stately mid the dorms From bus, subway, and the dorms Barnardites arrive for early morning classes. A restless city has awakened and its streets fill with crowds and the roar of traffic. From all parts of the metropolitan area students converge on Barnard Hall. On Zke City ' s Morning Koar flew 1 ork Js Barnard ' s laboratory Field work tit the McMahon Shelter Field work of every kind may be carried on in the huge laboratory to which Barnard has immediate access. Sociology majors find many opportunities to put to the test of prac- tical application their theories of settlement work. Fine Arts majors have a unique ad- vantage with great museums, galleries, and famous buildings so close at hand. Our aca- demic building may be located on one square block, hut this in no way limits the scope of the various endeavors begun there. The whole city and its environs lies before us presenting a host of possibilities for stimulating inquiry and work. Sculpture by Mary Jane A ' ocme Architecture by John I). Rockefeller 12 Sciences Weigh, dissect, measure and mix — labs repre- sent hours of exacting mental work coupled with physical endurance. A day ends perfectly for the M Ubank Mall There are two means of approach to Milbank Hall — the leisurely stroll across campus, talking to friends, and then one last cigarette on the porch — or the har- ried dash from subway or bus and the last minute spurt of speed to reach the door just as the bell rings. In either case, one arrives at the build- ing where most of our academic classes are held. This sturdy structure of Vic- torian architecture is the center of our daily activities — from tbe seminar rooms in the basement to the greenhouses on the roof — from antbropology to zoolojrv. . one last cigarette on the porch Many hours of intensive study and thorough research are spent in the li- brary. Silence is broken only by the squeak of the chairs or the call of the librarian for an overdue book. For those spare moments, there are comfortable alcoves and shelves stacked with current periodicals and light reading material. Zhe Cibmry ' To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield ' College Assemblies All-college assemblies offer full, rich, and entertaining programs. Barnard, as a metro- politan college, is particularly fortunate in being able to invite many distinguished speakers and performers in the arts, sci- ences and humanities. The assemblies at- tempt to give to Barnardites practical in- sight in applying a college education to future endeavors. Assemblies afford the oc- casion to hear statesman and scientist, poet and philosopher, achieving a balance be- tween the theoretical and actual. The center for great activity is Earl Hall where clubs hold their meetings and sponsor many social affairs. The keystone for the Barnard relig- ious clubs is Interfaith Council, consist- ing of representatives of each of the or- ganizations. The council seeks to in- crease cooperation among the various religious groups through the sponsor- ship of programs such as the Thursday noon meetings and the informal teas and discussions with members of the faculty. A high point in the University relig- ious program is the Christmas Candle- light service held at St. Paul ' s Chapel. Candlelight in a dark chapel seems sym- bolic of man in his belief in a knowledge beyond the finite.
