1945 ENTRANCE LEGEND Demeter, Goddess of Earth, withheld from the land its fruitfulness, for she had lost her daughter, Persephone, to Pluto, God of the Underworld. That year was most dreadful and cruel to all mankind; so, to bring relief to mortals, Persephone was allowed to return to Earth for two-thirds of every year. During this time, Demeter, in her joy, reclothed the Earth with the abundance of Spring but again withheld her gifts when Persephone had to return to the Underworld for the remaining months of the year. LAMENT OF PERSEPHONE I reach my hand out And the dark it touches Clings. And dank surrounds me Pressing close. Dark for me was tulip depth. Silk of bat wing Spread for flight, and Seaweed wet on shining rocks, A single cypress On a wind-swept hill, Curve of cherry, ripe, The high-piled frown Of thunder clouds, The earth new-turned For my mother ' s step; These I thought Meant dark. And now I reach my hand out And the dark it touches Clings.
