Greek Games, Barnard ' s fondest tradi- tion, paid two-fold homage to the god- desses of Spring and Hope, Demeter and Persephone. The class of ' 48 made the Sophomores struggle for their victory which was one of the closest in years,

1945 ENTRANCE LEGEND Demeter, Goddess of Earth, withheld from the land its fruitfulness, for she had lost her daughter, Persephone, to Pluto, God of the Underworld. That year was most dreadful and cruel to all mankind; so, to bring relief to mortals, Persephone was allowed to return to Earth for two-thirds of every year. During this time, Demeter, in her joy, reclothed the Earth with the abundance of Spring but again withheld her gifts when Persephone had to return to the Underworld for the remaining months of the year.
