OTtgsi anb Cues; , ■ , „ ., Julius Caesfar With the assistance of English ' 81, under the superb direction of Jose Ruben, the newly organized Wigs and Cues undertook the production of Julius Caesar. At first the problems of staging the mob, of feminine portraits of war- like men, and toga-impedimenta loomed large. But the club members had proven themselves in Elizabethan scenes, hav- ing presented Marlowe ' s Edward II in December ' 44, and were anxious to ac- cept the challenge, assured of the help of Mr. Ruben director of the Dramatic Workshop. When the cast had been chosen, there began weeks of rehearsal, Saturdays, Sundays, and midnights in Milbank, attendance required by stage manager, Sally St ubblefield. Mr. Ruben, with cigarette holders, scripts, eyeglasses and briefcase spread out at the foot of the stage was friendly encouraging and in- spiring, and Miss Marcia Freeman assis- ted capably. Dorm girls were recruited for mob scenes, who having once seen Mr. Ruben bring life to a scene, became as enthusiastic as the rest of the cast. It was the perfect co-ordination of the mob — as Caesar ' s train and especially during the funeral speeches that kept up the pace, the color, and the timing, formu- lated by the director. The rich costumes, successful staging and sound effects fas- cinated the audience no less than the performances of Leora Dana as Cassius, Raiford Ragsdale as Brutus, Ann Mur- phy as Antony, Wesley Ward as Caesar, Willa Babcock as Calpurnia, Joan Tay- lor as Portia, and Chaucy Horsley as Gaius Ligarius. c wl. aa. c. An increasing number of local dials turned to 620 in this year of C.U.R.C. history. As the only undergraduate ac- tivity participated in by Barnard, Col- umbia, and the V-12, it started off at a fast pace by broadcasting the returns of the presidential election. It went on to greater heights in the entertainment field with three C.U.R.C. canteens broad- cast from Earl Hall first semester. There was glamour on-stage radiating from guest stars and name bands, and glamour a-foot as the Blue Lions leader swung into the current hits ... A long-cherished dream came true when the first long- distance remote was inaugurated. In keeping with their policy of broadcast- ing as many Columbia Sports events as possible, C.U.R.C. brought its campus listeners the Yale-Columbia game . . . direct from New Haven! Despite tech- nical difficulties the engineers and an- nouncers managed a very professional job . . . The United Nations Information Council presented each week a program devoted to one of our allies . . . Concerts by musicians of the University and Juil- liard, Recorded Requests, News, Sports Round-ups and other forms completed the schedule. ■29
