BARNARD COLLEGE H ARCHIVES 07 ' BUSINESS MANAGER 55 CHAPLAIN BAYNE ivhose ideals of religious tol- erance, racial justice, and brotherhood of man, and ivhose desire to take an active part in the war effort give us hope for a better world and a Lasting Peace. I NICHOLAS MURRAY BUTLER President j the nive isify VIRGINIA CROC HERON GILDERSLEEVE J)ean of the As Mortarboard goes to press, announcement is made of the appointment of Dean Gildersleeve as a Member of the American Delegation to the United Na- tions Conference to be held in San Francisco in the Spring. This is the highest honor ever paid to a woman by the government of the United States, and has won the praise and approval of the university norld and of the nation. j heshman Wml The Class of 1948 was swept into the flurry of Freshman Week Activities by a committee of hostesses chairmanned by Louise Du Bois. Transfers were welcomed by Betty Burton and Nadine Foss. Arriving at Barnard Hall, on opening day, they were mustered into small groups by the upperclassmen, introduced to everybody in sight and marched off to the Library by their hostesses, who abandoned them to their Blue Books and the complications of our Library system as inter- preted by Miss Greene, the Librarian. Rescued from the Library, they crossed to McMillin theatre for the Opening Exercises of Columbia University. Impressed by the beauty and dignity of a full Academic Procession, by the address of Dr. Butler, and by the century-old tradition, they sang their new Alma Mater with a thrill of anticipation. As she conducted a guided tour around the cam- pus, each hostess attempted to explain the functions of Honor Board, Rep Assembly, and the importance of National Service on campus. She answered their queries about Student Mail, Jake, and the Jungle. Invita- tions to teas, dances, luncheons, plus a score of posters advertising the plans of various clubs and organizations erased any fears they had been harboring about the limitations of campus life in the city. becoming acquainted The Freshman discovered that the dorm population is classified according to floors. In a few days she began to feel at home in Hewitt. The cosmopolitan atmosphere is a much used phrase, but until the new- comer found herself at dorm breakfast or a cafeteria luncheon with a young lady from Poland, China, or Mexico, she did not realize its significance. New and stimulating friendships highlighted the first days for dorm denizens and sub- way-stair victims alike. Junior hostesses await their freshman sisters . . . and tag them. With organ hymns, with a crimson-gowned choir, with the chaplain ' s friendly message, St. Paul s Chapel warmly welcomes them. The Dean, Dr. McGuire, and Undergraduate President, Sabra Foiiett, are next to greet the newcomers who lunch at Hewitt Hall and receive Alumnae me- mentoes of the day. Luncheon is followed by an introduction to student govern- ment at work. . . . 13 student government When Miss 1948 entered the under- graduate body politic, she became a part of the correlated, constructive, and often combustive organization of student gov- ernment. She set her steps to follow bear-tracks laid by its black-robed lead- ers. She heard the program of President Sabra Follett in a plea for student par- ticipation, active representation and an intensified honor code. Since the recent change in the consti- tution, the creating of policy has come within the scope of the large, informal body, Rep Assembly. Non-assembly members were encouraged to join the sandwich-munching group at their Mon- day meetings, to hear their heated de- Sabra Follett, President of the Under- graduate Association. bates and add their ideas to the discus- sion. Honor Board, also in activated spirit, initiated the tapping system in one of the most vigorous years of student poli- tics Barnard Hall has ever seen. Interviews with fresh- men, registration cards for all, and re- cruiting campaigns set students rolling bandages with a vengeance, aiding in hospitals and caring for Morningside charges. The juniors initiated class proj- ects, and drive boxes on Jake were filled to the hilt. Barnard at war was at work. Invited to tea to meet the religious counselors, they become interested in the work of their own group and then in the efforts for mutual understanding, and agree- ment on the broader topics. Thursday luncheons after Chapel provide discus- sion time, while Wednesday Open House and in particular the occasional tea dances are underlined on the calendar in Navy Blue and Gold. Highlight of the Spring program was Religious Emphasis Week; its theme: religion in contemporary life and faith for today. At first the problems of staging the mob, of feminine portraits of war- like men, and toga-impedimenta loomed large. But the club members had proven themselves in Elizabethan scenes, hav- ing presented Marlowe ' s Edward II in December ' 44, and were anxious to ac- cept the challenge, assured of the help of Mr. Ruben director of the Dramatic Workshop. When the cast had been chosen, there began weeks of rehearsal, Saturdays, Sundays, and midnights in Milbank, attendance required by stage manager, Sally St ubblefield. Mr. Ruben, with cigarette holders, scripts, eyeglasses and briefcase spread out at the foot of the stage was friendly encouraging and in- spiring, and Miss Marcia Freeman assis- ted capably. Dorm girls were recruited for mob scenes, who having once seen Mr. Ruben bring life to a scene, became as enthusiastic as the rest of the cast. It was the perfect co-ordination of the mob — as Caesar ' s train and especially during the funeral speeches that kept up the pace, the color, and the timing, formu- lated by the director. The rich costumes, successful staging and sound effects fas- cinated the audience no less than the performances of Leora Dana as Cassius, Raiford Ragsdale as Brutus, Ann Mur- phy as Antony, Wesley Ward as Caesar, Willa Babcock as Calpurnia, Joan Tay- lor as Portia, and Chaucy Horsley as Gaius Ligarius. c wl. aa. c. An increasing number of local dials turned to 620 in this year of C.U.R.C. history. As the only undergraduate ac- tivity participated in by Barnard, Col- umbia, and the V-12, it started off at a fast pace by broadcasting the returns of the presidential election. It went on to greater heights in the entertainment field with three C.U.R.C. canteens broad- cast from Earl Hall first semester. There was glamour on-stage radiating from guest stars and name bands, and glamour a-foot as the Blue Lions leader swung into the current hits ... A long-cherished dream came true when the first long- distance remote was inaugurated. In keeping with their policy of broadcast- ing as many Columbia Sports events as possible, C.U.R.C. brought its campus listeners the Yale-Columbia game . . . direct from New Haven! Despite tech- nical difficulties the engineers and an- nouncers managed a very professional job . . . The United Nations Information Council presented each week a program devoted to one of our allies . . . Concerts by musicians of the University and Juil- liard, Recorded Requests, News, Sports Round-ups and other forms completed the schedule. ■29 political council The year of election, 1944, gave impe- tus to political interest and organization on campus. Jake was a fortress of F.D.R. buttons and Time to Change literature preceding November 7. Yet beyond all partisanship was a deter- mined effort to get out the vote, bring out opinion and strike out prejudiced thought. Political Council performed the task admirably through an assembly debate and a college straw vote. What- ever the topic, a Council confab has an atmosphere of intellectual stimulation and awareness to world events. liberal club A democratic will and a democratic conscience - — motto of the new and active group led by Joanne Kuth. debate club Revived this year by Doris Clark, the club made the ancient art of refu- tation sound again. f . r. c. Traditional June Course. ams After a hectic history of near suspension by Student Council in view of the war and shortages of everything from costumes and paint- brushes to Sophomore athletes, Greek Games, dedicated to Prome- theus for his contemporary meaning, emerged as one of the loveliest pageants in Barnard ' s history. But there was no shortage of enthus- iasm and so Greek Games remained a part of Barnard tradition. The Sophomores carried off the most laurel wreaths, winning by the highest score in Games ' history. Their dance portrayed a band of revelers celebrating the gift of fire from Prometheus. The gods, to avenge the theft, send Pandora to earth with a box containing all the evils of the world.
