The fact that the Class of 1959 won the flag rush made it possible for our flag to be raised above the Seniors' flag. The officers from each class took part in the actual raising of the flag. FLAG RUSH Ellen Dickinson and Coach Internicola are resting after a long flag rush march. DINIUK l'l-ll Y Senior Play in the rough! On October 23, 1958, the Class of 1959 presented The Babbling Brooks. The finished product represented plenty of rehearsals and hard work. 4, Q .-Q . i'f IUNIOR PROM Our junior Prom was held January 25, 1958. The theme was Golden Gateway to the South. We chose Ellen Dickinson and Leonard Strickland as our king and queen, The queen's flower bearer was Carol Lozow and the king's crown bearer was Larry Smith. -T 1 . V A CITIZENSI-IIP : , A - e 2 79 ENGLISH English is a required subject in every year of school. Grade and junior High Eng- lish classes learn basic grammar and punctuation rules, with selected short stories invad- dition. Freshman classes do more work in literature, reading The Black Arrow, and often doing projects in connection with the novel or with American folklore. Sophomores read Julius Caesar and learn something of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan period in literature. Sophomores write autobiographies, too. The Junior English classes are very important. This is the year English regents is given. Concentration is given to studying plays, composition work, and reading Arrowsmith. The Senior year consists largely of literature and topics such as newspaper construction and career studies. Macbeth and A Tale of Two Cities are read in this year. The picture above shows some of the pro- jects that were done on Macbeth in January. All Junior and Senior English classes do vocabulary work from the Reader? Digert and read articles to get a better viewpoint in literature. SPONSORED BY: BERNECKER'S RESTAURANT, BARKER LUMBER COMPANY 80 A specified course at Barker Central is vocational srenography. The course prepares students for future secretary or office work. An introduction to business and the first. year of typing are offered to Freshmen. The courses in the second year include typing and shorthand. The next year brings shorthand and transcription. Business law and secre- tarial practice are alternated. Switchboard pracitice is acquired by work on the school switchboard. Some students do secretarial or typing work for faculty members or supervisors. Shown above are some typists who are working on assignments and projects during an eighth period. Many business students belong to press club which gives them an opportunity to use the skills they have learned. Before a student could become a member, he had to be accepted through an approved application. The Science Club maintained experimental rats and mice at the school farm which several students used in projects this year. The projects were either taken to Science Congress or submitted to the Westinghouse Scholarship program. The regular meetings were used as work periods. This year, the club has been sponsoring a special series of science books which are sent for our use by the state. The increased emphasis on science makes this service a real treat. In order to make it possible to keep up with publishing the page in the Union- Szm and journal, plus the extra job of publishing The Barker, the staff have had to stay on their toes. They have had to have the ability to conduct interviews and to write up their stories in an interesting manner.
