RANEY When choosing an individual to whom our yearbook should be dedicated, we looked for one Whose quali- ties of personality are outstanding to the students of Bardstown High School. It is with sincerest pleasure that we, the Senior Class of 1971, dedicate this ann- ual to Mr. Lee Raney. Mr. Raney's tranquil personality and keen intellect have made him a friend of all. We would like to thank him for the enthusiasm, patience and understanding he has shown us. HAPPINESS IS A PRGUD TRADITION If happiness is aproud tradition, the class of '71 has a rea- son to be happy. One hundred and twenty-nine strong, we have come a long way, since the sixty first graders walked ,hrough these doors for the first time. Fate has always smiled on the Class of ,7l. We were the first seventh grade class to occupy the Junior High building. It was a time of adjustment for all of us. A few are still ad- justing. With the Eighth Grade came the feeling of superior- ity, for then we were looked upon as the older group. At last we reached our Freshman year and the long awaited privileges were ours. But with these benefits came the realization of the work of the four long years ahead. As Sophomores We had a goal to strive for as We began planning for the Junior-Senior Prom. With the closing of St. Joe Prep came the arrival of many new faces. In addition to bring strength of number, they brought strength of character to our class. Our Junior year, 1969-1970, was highlighted by many memorable events. Success was on our side in the athletic department. Many Juniors contributed to the capture ofthe Title of Class A State Football Runner-ups. The climax was the Junior-Senior Prom, well worth all our hard work. As Seniors, we no longer had someone to look up to. The responsibility of leadership was in our hands and it was our duty to provide a good example for the lower classmen. Receiving class rings and posing for our portraits were two of the high points of our Senior year. Even the tedious col- lege board exams did not discourage us because they were reminders of our oncoming graduation. We realized that, though we were ending an important stage in our lives, we were approaching a much more serious phase. AS SENIORS WE WERE INVOLVED IN MANY NEW EXPERIENCES ANXIOUSLY AWAITING OUR CLASS RINGS AND NERVOUSLY POSING FOR SENIOR PORTRAITS BROUGHT ABOUT THE REALIZA- TION THAT WE HAD FINALLY REACHED THE TOP. WE STRIVED TO BE THE BEST IN ALL WE ENDEAVORED. A FACT REVEALED IN THE SUCCESS OF THE SENIOR FLOATS AND THE PROM OF 1970. AND EVEN WITH ALL THESE ACTIVITIES, WE STILL FOUND TIME FOR LOAF- ING. BFIANSON This year, as in the years past, Mr. Branson, our dedicated principal has devoted his untiring efforts to plan a curricu- lum which will be beneficial later on in life. His efforts have certainly made our high school days a very meaningful ex- perience. His constant good cheer has also helped us to for- get some of the drudgery of the school day. He has tried to make school a little easier by slacking up on the rules for dress and conduct. Although we do not realize it now, we should consider ourselves lucky to have a principal like him. This fact will become increasingly relevent in the years fol- lowing our graduation. We, the members of the student body, would like to thank him for another year of loyal service. SATHLETE VARSITY CHEERLEADERS The Varsity Cheerleaders serve as an inspiration to the team and the school. They are elected from the Freslnnan, Sophomore, and Junior classes. Cheerleading although a mix- ture of many long hours of practice, R J strict disipline, and cold rainy nights, is a rewarding experience. They led the Tiger fans all the way, even to the state championship. For the first time, this year, B.H.S. had boy cheerleaders dur- ing basketball season. P ' a s ,f EEANKFGRT 24-7 Happiness is victory Touchdown! Big 'Un on the run. Bardstown High again proved it's reputation of being a team that refused to quit. After the Tigers came back victors in nine straight regular season games, they battled highly touted Frankfort for the Regional Crown. Though tough defense and the ability to make the big play, the purple and gold machine rolled on. Mike fthe Toej Ballard celebrated by kicking the second field goal in school history. Russellville proved to be plenty tough for the Tigers, but not tough enough. The Toe again pulled it out for us as we won 7-6. The victory was a costly one as Jerry Willett was lost for the State game when he suffered a broken collarbone. With our sights on the big one, we refused to be No. 2 again. We had to be No. l. Although we were were underdogs we jumped to a 13-0 lead over the mighty Bulldogs from Lynch. Could we hold on? We had to and did. We were Champions in every sense of the word. WE WERE NUMBER ONE!!! James Biven State Long and Triple Jump Winner In the spring of 1970 Bardstown High trackmen accom- plished a feat that had never been conquered before. After winning the Regional track meet the Tiger Track Team went on to capture the coveted State Class A Track Championship. Led by long jumper J im Biven, distance running of Rick Hill C701 and Mark Mathis C701 the Tiger cinderman were able to top their nearest rival by five points. Along with these outstanding individual performances there was a display of teamwork. The 880 relay team consisting of Jerry Willett, Mike Wickliffe, Dale Downs and Joe Lee Phillips and the mile realy team of Hill, Mathis, Downs and Willett helped pick up valu- able points in the State meet. To have a championship team one must have both out- standing individual and team performance. These two elements brought another athletic trophy to Bardstown High School.
