Coach Deborah Callaway said, ‘They had a very strong team, but for some reason they did not start playing ball until the end of the year.” In the District Tournament, the team came close to third place, but lost out in the last few innings. Their record in the tournament was one win and two losses. Coach Callaway had eleven returning players and one freshman. Some returning players were: Shelia Gumbs, Cherril Panteau, Kelly Sloan, Priscilla Ramseur, Betsy Wade, Verdan St. Aimie, Ophelia Williams, Wanda Grier, Brenda Sheely, Asonja Shepard, and Bonnilyn Joseph. At the end of the season Shelia Gumbs, with the highest batting average of .650,received the “Most Valuable Player Award”, Kelly Sloan, with the second highest batting average of .500, received the “Sportsmanship Award,” and Cheryl Panteau was titled “Most Outstanding Player” for 1983.
