We hope that in the many years to come you will be able to pick up the annual and find pictures of for- gotten faces and remember the good times We shared with them back in B. H. S. We think of the students who are filling our places, taking part in the same activities that we enjoyed, and going to the same classes. Not only will we see the faces of the students in the annual but also the pictures of those teachers who taught us to learn to live, and we will wonder where they are and what they are doing. Yes, this 1952 Minnewaukan will give us much to think about. We wish to thank all the nice people who helped make this year- book possible. Mr. Mueller and Mr. Zarling for their cooperation, the Sauk County Publishing Company, the Widen Engraving Company, the Boehm Bindery Company, and the teachers and students for their patience. The Minnewaukan would also like to give special thanks to the adviser, Miss Outland for her help and assistance. We would like to thank the L. G. Balfour Company for their donation. 2 'ffl l IIEIIICATIIIN E To two of the most helpful people We know, Mr. Willson and Mr. llinkolv, we clecli- cate this 1952 Minnewaukan. XVe want to thank you for your sincere helpfulness and patience toward us even when you were busy With other responsibilities, and we appreciate the keen interest you have shown in us by attending our parties and outside activities. 3 Table of Contents ADMINISTRATION .... We Pranked and Played 1 J . 23 Worked and Won Honors 2A The Hals of lvyn have bid farewell to the class of '52, but they Won't forget some of our exploits for a long time. Among our more notable accornplishxnents was the sellout of the class play tickets. So many people wanted to see the play that the ushers had dilliculty in finding room for all of them. The play went over big, with everyone rolling in the aisles. Fountain pens were given to Phyllis Neitzel and jerry Knerr as the boy and girl selling the most tickets. One of our more notorious escapades involved the painting of a big ,52 on the school chimney and the fight with the juniors, the seniors winning of course. Did you know that the class has thirteen top honor students instead of the usual ten? Shir- ley Bermann and Oliver Clement walked away with the highest honors. To end our glorious four years of school the senior banquet was held at -Okee Lodge on june 5, and the picnic at Devills Lake june 4. But the proudest of all accomplislnnents is the fact that nearly S5300 has been left to buy a class gift which is to be two spotlights and a new flag for the gym. Honorable 13-1. If you were wondering what those sounds were that came out of the auditorium every Tuesday and Thursday during homeroom this year, you can stop. It was the Boys Clee cluh practicing. In February the sounds were those of the boys imitating British tars rehearsing for the oft-stage chorus of the operetta. Entering in the music festival held at Heedsburg was the major project of the year. Singing Blow Trumpets Blowf' Mary Don't You VVeep,'i and God Is the Spirit they rated first class. Bill Bevens, jack Sherman. David Lueders and Donald V ethe formed the quartet. They sang at the festival and at the Hi-Y banquet, featuring The Blue-Tail Fly. Under the direction of Miss jane Haslanger and with the assistance of Marianna Steele at the piano, the Glee Club closed a successful year. 39 Hearing Strange Music Miss llaslanger? The eyes and ears were those of the High Light report- ers, who are always looking for news or a big scoop. During the year the High Light, with jerry Knerr as editor and Miss Dahl as adviser. kept us well informed about the happenings around B. H. S. The High Light was always one jump ahead of everyone in knowing this news. Some of their big scoops were: Bermann and Clement Highest Hon- ors, Prom King, and Bheva Grosinske Wins D. A. B. Also the High Light kept us informed about the work of the various clubs and the school gossip in the Vacuum Cleaneri' column. Dick Marquardt did a fine job at covering the sports events. Thursday and Friday evenings, May 8 and 9, the senior class presented their portrayal of Meet Me in St. Louisf' This play, directed by Mrs. Ethel Rich, was a light comedy with all the mem- bers of the cast and the audience joining into the fun. The Smith family of St. Louis suddenly Hnd themselves faced with the problem of moving the entire family-five children, a cat, a maid and a grandfather-to New York. The children, refusing to accept this decision of their father, decide to take the situation into their own hands, with hilari- ous results climaxed in a grand finale with music, dancing, and singing. Between acts the school dance band played songs popular at the time of the St. Louis Exposi- tion, and Donna Duncan, LaVeta Kapelka, Dean Meyer and Helen Horn danced to the music of the Trolley Song sung by Richard Teich. Cay turn of the century costumes and a pictur- eque set recreated the feeling of the period. Quick! Weighing 190 pounds, Ralph was an excellent blocker and pass receiver. He is a senior and the team will really miss him next year. He played on defense and offense throughout the year. He was named on the all- conference team for both offensive and defensive play. He Was also elected captain of the team. ir RAY SCHNEIDER Ray played right tackle this year, and was a very aggressive, hard-hitting boy. He played on both offense and defense and was one of the most efficient linemen. at' JERRY KNERR jerry was our quarterback this year, playing the entire year in offense and defense. He helped the team a great deal with his ability to call the right plays at the right time. He completed many passes and was also an excellent tackler on defense. Ollie is a senior this year. 'A' BoBE1aT LIEGEL Bob was one of the best ball-carriers in the conference this year. as well as a standout performer on defense. He is a rough player and much credit for the success of the team should go to Bob. He operated from the left halfback position with plenty of speed and drive. 'A' DICK SCHOENOFF Turk played at guard position this, his senior year. and he certainly proved that he could play it very well. Time after time, Dick would come through with a tackle that would send any ball carrier reeling. ir PHIL HANLEY Phil was a junior this year, having played at the left guard position. He was a very rugged guard, being in on almost every play. Phil should be a big man on next year's team. i' TOM OSBORNE Tom played the left end position this year on offense. He was bothered by a bad shoulder which he received in his junior year, but he was a very good pass receiver and blocker. Tom is another senior this year. ir DON TOPHAM Don played left tackle on offense and defense this year. Having kick- ed off to the Dells. the Chiefs promptly marched down field for a touchdown with Tofson scoring in the last 40 seconds. Thunderbirds Whip Edgerton 38-0 Baraboo battled its way nearer to the top in this game with Coach Liedholdt sending in every- body from the bench but still not being able to hold the score down. Touchdowns were scored by Liegel, Melvin, Bowerman and Marquardt. Baraboo Tips Reedsburg Baraboo came out on top of Reedsburg by a score of 8-6. Much credit must be given to Cenc Melvin in this game for his hard tackling and running and also his fine pass to Ralph Schultz for the only touchdown for Baraboo. Reedsburg scored on an intercepted pass to go ahead 7-6 at the half. The second half was a bruising see-saw affair with no one being able to score until the Baraboo team trapped a Reedsburg runner behind his goal line after Melvin blocked a punt. Beeds- burg kicked off to Baraboo and the Thunderbirds were still in possession of the ball when the final gun went off. Following this game, we beat the Hornets from Richland Center 26-0, ending the season for a brilliant second place team composed of 20 senior lettermen. H F X h , .
