Dick played running guard with a sixth sense which enabled him to play the position unsurpassed throughout this foot- ball conference. llis blocks were a main fac- tor in making possible many long gains. He now does his high flying for the Army Air Force. DUANE HARMEI.. This year was the cli- max to l'uss's fine career of lligh School foot- ball at end. He has pulled down passes that many coaches would have said their boys did a good job in touching. l'uss is also a three let- ter man in basketball. BOB BACH. Louie, one of l3araboo's out- standing players had hard luck this year, break- ing his collarbone early in the football season. ln order to redeem himself he came back strong- ly on the basketball court as one of the most valuable men. DAVID HOLADAY. Dave played reserve tackle during the first four games of the sea- so11. VVith the departure of men to the service Dave was called upon to fill the assignment ol regular tackle. He did this and the results were excellent. GRANT B UELOVV. Grant was part of Bar- abools reserve strength. He played guard with a combination of speed, power, and brain which is undoubtedly the best thing to have on a foot- ball field. Ile also won his letter as a hurdler in track. IIICRH CADY. Speed was he had plenty to burn. He with a scoring spree against ning over live touchdowns points. llis speed and agility court were also of use. Herb's dish and ended his career Portage by run- and two extra on the basketball GEORGE HOVVARD. lVhen the Army Air country, Barabocfs football team suffered a severe blow. George was outstanding in the tackle position. He also excelled in track in the 440 as well as the relay. KEN LEMOTNE. A blocking quarterback deluxe. His deadly tackling had bone-crush- ing effect, sending many an opponent to the bench. Ken also won a track letter in the 100 and the 200 yard dashes. His talent is now being used by the U. S. Navy. A NICK HOLMES. A power laden, pile driv- ing fullback. VVhen there wasn't a hole to run through, Nick just plowed right on anyway. - Ile ran up 95 points to set a new conference individual scoring record. lie is a bulwark on the basketball team also. HAROLD HOLT. Habo was guard, especially useful on defense. MARK STONE. During his three football years, Mark missed scarcely a day of practice and could always be depended on to fill in, in case of injury or any other mishap. lle per- formed his job conscientiously, contributing some fine work. a stalwart Submarin- ing was his specialty and many is the time he came up from under the pile with a mouthful of dirt. the U. S. Habo now expends his talents for Army. BOB WEISKE. The football center. A bet- ter player could not be found, as Bob didn't make a bad pass all season. His ability to give and take Qmostly takej xx as of vast importance in the team's triumphs. He was also a discus man in track. They had a fair season last year. The team went into the first match without the ser- xices of .lolm Meyers who was called to the Marines. XYhile putting up a good fight, Baraboo lost to a vet- eran Reedslwurg team S to 1. The return match was finally cancelled liecause of rain. ln the match with Portage, the doubles team losl and the singles men won. ln the return match, l'or- tage really turned on the heat and won -l to O. Still stinging from this defeat, the hoys went to Mad- ison for the conference meet. Due to the efforts of Russ l'otratz, the team ended in fourth place, with lit. Atkin- son nosing out Reedshurg for first place. The team gain- ed four points in the district meet at Madison through l.andon Risteen's efforts. TR .XCR liarahoo opened its track season with a rather in- experienced squad. but hard training plus the will to win produced a successful season. ln their first meet, which was with XYisconsin lligh, liarahoo overwhelmed them 75 to 349. Reedshurg and XYiseonsin Dells fell to Haralaoo's power in a triangular meet. The improving trackmen then met Reedshurg, VVisconsin Iligh, and Vtfisconsin Dells in an Invitational and won easily with 72 points. The Southern Ten Von- ference meet proved to he a tluiller. Un a rainy, nmd- soaked track, llarahoo lost the championship to lfort Atkinson hy a score of 67 to 65. ln the Sectional, which replaced the State Tourna- ment, llarahoo placed third, totaling 22 points. Outstanding performers for liarahoo last year were Capt. lid. Zellmer, Lewis liorck, Tom Donahue, and .Xdair lllisch. Unfortunately no track picture was taken last spring hecause of the improhalmility of an annual this year. INTRAM L7 R .X LS This year the intramurals started with the Rockets. last year's winners as favorites. At the start of the sea- son, the li squad and the 2nd XVard also looked good hy heating the lst and 3rd XYards. As the season progress- ed, so did the lst VVard for at the end of the season they had won 5, losing only one, to cop first place. Second place was held hy the Rockets who had won 4 and lost 2. hoth to the lst 'XVard, the last of which decided the con- ference winner. li Squad came in third and Srd XVard l.ast. :Xccording to custom, the lst XVard champs played the faculty in the final highlight of the season. What Has assed Gee, but we're old. just think-Seniors! How long we've hoped for and respected the title. Remember four years ago when we all came together in the northern half of the junior lligh main room? Right then and there our class sort of beamed above the rest. Some of the memorable things of our freshman year were the founding of a victor- ious Li. A. A. Class Basketball team, our matinee dances supervised by Miss W'ilIiams when the girls tried lo teach the Island Rats the tmer pointsw-yes. 'tes up boys, its true. Then came the junior Prom and our Iirst opportunity to shine with the rest. About a half dozen couples gut Brave, lieautitul, and last ot all llroke as they represented us l'reslnes on the tail end of the Grand March. That year we were first introduced to those little gremlins called credits , but Lady Luck brought most oi LIS through the tunnel to the other side of the fence. 1 still don't know which side is greener. . Talk about hicks! I wish I could have had roller skates that first day in the new buildiugg or evei1 big signs would have helped. But there were more red faces worn when we'd discovered ourselves in a boys gym class instead of home ees-or something on that order. At the first assembly program when Mr. VVillson gave l1is welcoming speech most of us had a funny feeling in the pit of our stomachs. lt was an indescribable sensation. The Seniors soon put us very much at ease with their welcoming Senior-Sophomore Shuffle. There was a touch of excitement-or call it domestic labor , in 1942, too-remember tl1e walk out? Oh yes-'nough said. That year went very fast, and before we knew it, we were juniors. That seemed to be our starring year. Henry Aldrich went over with a bang, and provided plenty of 111o11ey for a good junior Prom. Many a night we pounded nails in our tlnnnbs, but the decorations were worth it. As Time Goes By was the theme chosen, and it was a great success. lncidently, don't forget the Victory corsages. A few of the girl's plans were upset that year because the manpower shortage first began to effect us in our junior year. Letters from Marines were the main topic of conversation, and we began to realize what the war was all about. Towards spring class rings started showing themselves, and a few of them were exchanged--Sentimentalistsl l ! The war even influenced our ring design, The Air Cadet. All good things must come to an end, and our junior year was no exception. Ah! mighty seniors, at long last. It was a very unsettled year though. The first day of school we noticed a lot of southern accents in our classroom, whose families were connected with the B. O. XY., but one by one they drifted away froiu Baraboo, and Badger City. Aftei the first six weeks more and more of the senior boys went into Service. lt was hard to see them go, and they were always a very welcome sight wllen a furlough would come up. Our llrom was held the 28th of April, and it certainly seemed nice to be guests, Naturally, everyone looked forward to graduation-some hopefully, and others regretfully. They are: Joyce Her- fort, Presidentg Janet Hill, vice - president: Marjorie Mc Gilvra, treasurer. Miss Ethel Crandall was chosen as the new advisor to assist Miss Leila johnson. The next meeting was for election of our twenty new members. We had the formal induction services at the city library fol- lowed by the informal initiation the next day in school which proved very amusing. During the year we have had our semi- monthly pot-luck supper meetings. They were a lot of fun and very successful de- spite food rationing. Thalia sponsored a play writing contest for one of the three one-act plays of the Ag. Thalia Performances. The one that was eaderfs in Bi-monthly, the Sen- ior Hi-Y meets for a supper meeting in the old home ec room. The regular meetings are interspersed occasion- ally with guest speak- ers who are very enter- taining and educating. - Several annual events are sponsored and put on by this group. A Father and Son banquet is always one of the highlights of the year. The formal in- duction service, held by candle light, is very impressive and beautiful. Each year a sleigh ride is shared with the Thalia girls and is eagerly looked forward to. The junior Hi-Y meets every week the Senior Club doesn't, and it is composed ol' fellows who are juniors and sophomores. This group cooperates with the Senior Hi-Y in sponsoring events and are included on the sleigh ride. chosen, 0pera Houseu by Sandra Stekl, proved to be very good. The other two were a comedy, Coming Round the Mountain and The Valiant , a very drainatie pre- sentation. The plays were very well directed by Miss Ethel Crandall and assisted by Tha- lia student directors. We had several very interesting and en- tertaining book reviews during the year. It is customary every year to have a Mo- ther and Daughter tea to be held in the spring of the year. The junior girls who are members of Thalia are the hostesses to the Mothers and Senior girls. Une of the most irksome duties of the junior girls is to clean up the Thalia room by washing walls, curtains, and slipcovers. The Thalia formal banquet held at the close of each year is a beautiful and happy occasion which the Thalia members will re- member with joy in years to come. lubs A second hand hook store which proves very convenient is operated jointly by the two clubs. They buy and sell used text books at the beginning of each semester. This has been a marvelous help to the students in se- curing books. The combined clubs donate money for several movies which were given during the home-rooin period for the en- joyment of the entire school. At present, arrangements are being made by the Junior and Senior Hi-Y's with the Thalia to fix over one of the rooms in the junior High School. Wlieii remodeled and redecorated. this room would serve for a meeting place for both Hi-Y's and for Thalia. The arrange- ments are coming along very well and we expect to have this room ready presently.
