BAPTISTE In 1957, Mrs. Mary Baptiste, who was always a staunch believer in the cause of youth, granted 'J the school district fifteen acres of the original Sleepy Hollow Estate. The school was constructed on this site in 1959. Mrs. Baptiste was immensely proud of the building and surrounding grounds. In reference to the grounds, she once said, I am a great believer in the outdoor world as a part of a liberal education. f . I think it gives everyone a lot more chance to develop spiritually as wellas physically. She was also an educator. She earned the doctoraldegree in Biological Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania and taught a number 'ofgyears at a women's college in Columbus, Mississippi. She was a kind, unaffected, person who lived her life in accordance with her favorite scripture, This is the day the Lord hath made, we will be glad and rejoice in it. In the words of her sister, Miss Stella Steele, of Pasadena, California, She was always trying to help someone instead of think- ing of herself.
