Catch The Spirit lui' Baptist College is alive with an enthusi- astic spirit. This enthusiasm spreads to ev- eryone involved with BCC, and no one can resist the call of the Buccaneer Spirit. This spirit reflects the pride and hope we have in our college. The Buccaneer Spirit has helped us to set goals and to learn that with determina- tion and unwavering hope that all of our goals are obtainable if we truly try. We are many differ- ent people, yet we are all linked by the pride and hope we have in BCC and the touch of the Buccaneer Spiritf' New friendships broaden students' lives and provide a spirit of comraderie on cam- pus. The trials of growing up are eased by Il. . n caring faculty, staff and friends. Campus activities are designed to help students meet each other and begin to build friendships. The Buccaneer Spiritn which is present on campus grows with each year and fol- lows students as they leave Baptist College and move on to new adventures and new friendships. The new combination of upper and lower classmen would be the life of everyone at Baptist College for the year. Many activities were planned to help everyone get acquainted. Orientation was a week full of fun and excitement for everyone involved. The week started with Simon Sez, star- ring Bobby Gold. Michael Harvell was finally kicked out of the game after be- ing harrassed by Mr. Gold seventeen times. Terry Lee Davis amazed the crowd with his concentration and re- ceived the winning trophy. Orientation was the final deep breath of fun before students put the summer behind them to face another year of academics. Making so many new friends made it easier to endure exams, pop quiz- zes and ten term papers in one semester. The fun of Orientation Week made the hard work ahead a little easier to bear. 5 2. lm-.r..v.v. - --- Ut iematxon I-s K.-J .4 , A 1. . Golffl 1 3 C I-IEERLEADERS Firing Up The Crowd The chant c'Lets Cro Bucsi' rings through the Baptist College Field House as the cheerleaders lead the crowd in cheering on the Runnin' Buccaneers. This chant, along with many others, was created when zo young men and women gathered to practice for an upcoming game. Wfhen trying out for a spot on the cheer- leading squad, emphasis is put on personal- ity, spirit, enthusiasm, compatibility and dedication. i'Cheerleaders need to have an exciting personality and spirit about them so that they can express their enthusiasm of repre- senting their school, i' said Edie Ward, a third-year cheerleader. This is not to say that cheerleaders don't have to be in good physical shape. 'ci enjoy the physical demand that cheerleading puts on you. The required athletic skills are cart- wheels, round-offs, partnerstunts, cheers and side line chants,', said Bruce Moyer, a first-year cheerleader. Probably the most difficult aspect of cheering that catches the public's eye is partner stunts. You just have to be confi- dent in yourself and your partner and most of all have a positive attitude that you can do it,'i said Renee Bourque, a second-year cheerleader. The most important aspect in cheerlead- ing is safety. We try to stress the impor- tance of spotting and safety. Everyone must remain quiet during a stunt so that every- one can concentrate, said jackie Badgett, a first-year cheerleader. Even though there are zo different peo- ple that form the Baptist College Cheer- leading squad, they all have the same feel- ing-a feeling of pride and confidence. I really enjoy showing off and representing my school, H Larry Scott, a first-year cheer- leader, said, expressing the feeling of the entire squad. f4v' 54.33 f0 N..,. 4KCheerleaders fm 11' - WIS . ir, f .,. 2 -t ill, 4+-, 'Lynx A , ' l T'-lf? Not only has .lan been our advisor, but she has been our friend, and we appreciate that. The staff fCarmen, Edie, Jayne, Juli, Tim, Gregg and Steve? has put a lot of hard work and many long hours into this yearbook, and I thank them for their time and help. But the life she lived she loved Until one day she fell and stumbled, And although 'twas still alive, Her hopes all died that day. I can still recall the times We shared so well together. I can still feel all the love she gave away. Unselfish in all her ways she gave of what she had. Her highlight was to see the kids And just to talk, no, nothing more. So, when to the home she had to go Her joys became those few visits that she had. Why, oh why, is life this way, tell me Why, oh why, couldn't I see her more? I would have had it so. The pure religion I want to live's to visit the orphans and widows in their afflictions. 1 And now my life I'll live for those in need. I'll never forget the times that were ours To hold inside where man can never destroy or take away, They are mine forever more. Aunt Ella, Aunt Ella, thank you for your love. Napoleon Hinton Sefer! 1 The brackish water, filled with dangers, winding like a snake, through the rain kissed jungle that's lapping at the bank. The water's hold on its domain is a fragile one. And in a boat that rides along, an American with a gun. He lays low inside the boat praying to the Lord, but his mind goes back time and time again to his dead friends that lay on board. How long has he been here he wonders, his mind he cannot clear. He hears gun shots from the banks. He ducks his head in fear. He hears shouts, he knows not where, is it from behind that tree. How can I fight an enemy I cannot even see? God, how I wish that death would come and take me from this place. Another day in this green-hell is something I cannot face. The boat ran aground on a delta, its sand is up too high. He hears the sound of footsteps, but its owners he cannot spy. He hunkers down inside the boat, blood from his friends he smears on his clothes, over his heart. Dead he trys to appear. He feels a presence over his body, opens his eyes to see. Sin Loi Charlie, he shouts out loud and blows away the three. The yellow water rose a bit , his boat was underway. The clouds above shed theirtears for the third time again that day. I'm getting old before my time, older than I seem. Six months left on my tour, it seems like a bad dream. Half a year of hell to pay, for being seventeen. Mike Porter Sefer Am K. Monte Amrine Centelle La Vie I often feel as if I will never diversify, and will stay solitary forever. If I could only see my hopes, dreams, and aspirations for a split second, it would be the greatest joy on earth, that is, other than to be loved. To be in a world full of people and feel desolate is a sin against yourself, although it seems to be quite prevalent in our society. One aspect of loneliness is not knowing yourself as well as you expect others to know you. There are many things I desire to accomplish, but none can be achieved unless I first aspire to succeed. It seems that without true intent goals are useless. In some cases excellence in a moderate amount is better than falling short of outrageous goals. Everyone must have a preoccupation of some kind, in order to maintain a certain degree of sanity. To be well-rounded is a sinful necessity. Usually the only time obstacles are seen is when I take my eyes off my goal. One of the hardest sensations to define, in composition, is love. Although in truer feelings, it is defined many times, in many ways, during a person's existence. To explain love is an impossibility, but to demonstrate it is a must. Everyone leaves his! her mark on the world, no matter the person, some just leave a more permanent one, that's all. Always be blithe about who you are, and always make an effort to refurbish, and you will succeed in all you ever do. Accuracy is not always important, the fact that you tried shows your perspicaciousness. Gerald Truesclale Sefer! Though the fond impatience flays With a constant beat Through each minute of the day Seeming to retreat. In my youth, each hour strained As I urged it pass Now I count each falling grain Through the hourglass. Everything that cries a need Has a final turn and the rules are all decreed As we press on and yearn.
