The initial experience is indeed humblingg yet in time we develop con- fidence in our ability to survive and ultimately be of service to mankind. Through these involvements we realize that the Baptist Col- lege experience is more than just education from books. It is a small view of the world ahead offered during a transition period of our lives. 1'-' ba ink:-.4 A . ., n -, 3. . . - Q.-qt W f,-, my ' 'yn' M x -. 1 X -gs ' ci. tw-if '-'J' 711 l h qib! t L11 ff' ' o G 9' ' 'i' 'iii' wif I gg . f ' f y, - , 4 ,, 54 lr. 1, 5 IBQI, A Rauf' it ffm . . ..,? 5: . Labor Day, 1983, came with new, eager freshmen wondering what on earth they should do. But with the help of the Orienta- tion Committee, they were moved in, introduced and sent along their way. From Fair Play to the Charleston Harbor Cruise, the freshmen learned of Baptist College's warm, friendly atmosphere. The administration and return- ing students gave this new year a great start, and Orientation Week was just the beginning of a year full of new friendships and life long memories. fi ivrw rfv 1- SW 5 12 QQ Y 0, , r 1 I The Challenge of Learning in-ll 1 1 i... ,.w1R, S g ,4 A scholar's life is contemplative and quietg and yet at a time of discovery, it is rewarding and even exhilarating. To realize that we have achieved a goal which we have established for ourselves produces a warm feeling of self pride and desire for further gain. Regardless of our academic potential, ad- ministrators and faculty are willing to help us achieve the most possible from our years at BCC, They have made it their life work to influence us and guide our studies. Events may last only a few hours or a few days, but they take months of preparation. And as an event nears, tensions mount, tempers flare and grades slide. But events are essential to campus life. They break up the monotony of study and give us something to do. The only problem with events is that we never have enough time to devote to them because of school. This is true, but a holiday is what you make of it. Some people may visit someone and consider it a holiday. If you live far away and go home for a day, you may consider it a holiday. The length of a holiday does not matter. You may spend a month, a week, a dav, or even an hour with someone and con- sider it a holiday. You may ask, How could spending an hour Qt, or a day with someone be considered a holiday? A holiday is what you make of it. ,w-- . yli , -f S K Q 1 lf Rx it 2 il lil , 5 I' ii ,- 1 ,iw . Before reality one must have a dream. Such was the dream of Dr. John A. Hamrick, founding president of Baptist College at Charleston, now a reali- ty. Only a man of such outstanding character could conceive such a timely dream and transform it into a working reality. In December, 1964, Dr. Hamrick was named President of the Baptist College at Charleston, culminating many years of dedication to the cause of Christian educa- tion and a long felt need for a Baptist sup- ported college in lower South Carolina. Under Dr. Hamrick's leadership, the Bap- tist College at Charleston has grown from and idea to a multi-million dollar institution with several thousand students Q111fQl'1QQl..2', p 43 During Dr. Harnrick's,nineteen years as president of Baptist College at Charleston, his goals and objectives for the insfitutiorl have always been set high. To simplify all, he says, Our most important objective has been to provide opportunities for each student to reach his or her maximum ipott-211+ tial spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. A S, IQ Dr. Hamrick's retirement in December, 1983, leaves one with the realization that real education is a continuous process consisting of components of the past, present, and future. One looks back at the dreamiwhich became today's reality and tomorrow's prof mise for the future. Anyone who witnesses some of the last hours before pages are due at the publishers plant can attest to that. The job of publishing a yearbook involves many people who must work together on a central theme. The basic design of the book is established by the editor, and each section editor and staff at- tempts to complement that design throughout their section. Thus the basic layout is obtained. The final element of design for the yearbook is the writing of copy, identification of photos, and other finalizing features. This stage involves all staff members' assistance, and other students and irganization leaders are called on to compile this work. The Cutlass staff is responsible for providing our students with an accurate memoryfhistory book of heir years at Baptist College. As a literary publication the Sefer prints poetry, short stories, essays and meditations. As artistic expressions, sketches, paintings and photographs are also included in its scope. The Sefer is published once a semester by students who volunteer their time and talents. The Buc'-n-Print is the official College newspaper for Baptist College and has been published since the campus was built. The philosophy of the paper adheres to the fact that it is a campus paper and confines its copy to that which pertains to the Baptist College family. News of a wider scope is the responsibility of commercial papers. The paper attempts to eep a balanced format, including all areas of college activities, from academic to athletic. The staff is voluntary and their responsibilities are assigned as the talent emerges among the students who offer to work on the staff. There is every attempt made to keep in touch with all areas of Baptist College's endeavors, and to give everyone a chance to participate in the journalistic adventures of copy writing, layout, advertising, distributions, and photography. They have high hopes of boosting the spirit of the students as well as the teams at each athletic competi- tion. This year's squad only has five returners from last year's squad which includes Tammy Cuda, Laurie Lusk, Andrea Hopkins, Erik Nor- man, and Donnie Simmons. With more than half of this year's squad being new, the new coach for the cheerleaders, Donnie Wilkerson, says that he is in a building stage.
