The idea' of Baptist College began in 1-9511. The first sessions of class were held in 1965 in the First Baptist Qhurch of 'North Charleston. Enroll- ment has rapidly grown from 588 to 2800 over the years. Today, the col- llegeflisl still growing in all directions. it has fro: its in the soil. M! v 1.5 -fl M5 -' . ,- May Day 1980 May Day is the time when the campus honors those young ladies considered special to BCC. This year's festivities began with the out- going queen, Miss Susan Harrison, singing her version of The Way We Were. Miss Harrison was escorted by Danny Lee, S.G.A. President. Afterwards, the new court was intro- duced. The new court was selected by the students during a previous Con- vocation. The Queen and her court represents to all students those young ladies with outstanding quali- ties that are admired by others. The young lady selected this year to reign as queen was Miss Lynn Lockridge. The Maid of Honor was Miss Lucy Armstrong. The court consisted of Miss Cassandra Bol- den, Miss Paula Baker, Miss Leslie Childress, Miss Sheliah Durham, Miss Nan Fallaw, Miss Kim Gog- gans, Miss Maxine Greene, and Miss Vickie Odom. Mr. John Crooks served as Master of Ceremonies. Entertainment was provided by the B.C.C. choir under the direction of Dr. David Cuttino. Following the ty- ing of the May Pole, Dr. Cuttino sang There'll Never Be Another You . Parents and friends of the May Court were honored at a lun- cheon in the Gold Room following the May Day Ceremony. Picture 1: iMay Oueen Courti. Young men decide which girl they would like to take: the young ladies wonder if they will be asked. Each couple hopes that this night will be a memorable one. Somehow for one evening students are able to forget their studies and just relax. Girls begin early choosing the dresses that accent their beauty. Boys hurry to make reservations at local restaurants for that special dinner. Time seems to move like wa- ter in a rushing stream when the day finally arrives. Will there be enough time to do all that is needed to be done? Junior-Senior 1980 This year's Junior-Senior was held at the Charlestone Air Force Base on April 25, 1980. The Offi- cer's Club was richly decorated with fountains, flowers, and food. Doug Brooks, President of the Junior Class, kept his promise that this will be the best Junior-Senior ever. The officers of the Junior Class cer- tainly deserve much praise for a night that created many memories to be shared for years to come. Graduation- 1980 n. - 9 i ' . o .M 2 NH .-If On Sunday, May 25, the 1980 Baptist College graduates gathered at the Gaillard Auditorium for com- mencement activities. Dr. Tom Hag- gai was the guest speaker. Guests and relatives filled the auditorium to capacity limits. Music was provided by Dr. Cuttino with the Baptist College Choir and Mr. Dan- ny Leonard with the jazz band pro- vided the music for the ceremonies. Honorary degrees were presented to Dr. Haggai, Dr. William Blanton, Robert Cuttino, William F. Bishop, and J. Thomas Garrett. Marshals, chosen for good char- acter, leadership abilities, and aca- demic excellence, included John James Bergman, Craig Edwin Cle- son, Debbie Ann Cockrell, Amanda Gay Henderson, William M. Mimms, Jr., Doris Elaine Price, Richard Daw- son Reid, Rhonda Rogers, Robert Chris Walton, Sandie Lou Williams, and alternates Teresa Marie Amer- son and Timothy K. Pierce. ,- ',,. No matter what name it is called, Rivers Avenue is Main Street for B.C.C. students. Rivers is one of the few main roads in Charleston where stu- dents can find fun, food, and tab- rics. To escape the tortures of the B.C.C. Dining Hall, many students have been known to slip off campus to enjoy the flavor of real cooked food, almost like Mom makes. Oth- er attractions include respectable dance spots, movie theaters, and shopping centers. Even if a student does not want to buy anything, Riv- ers Avenue is a place to visit or to just get away. One is that the college has one of the nation's fastest growing Air Force ROTC. Units. A little more than a year ago, the unit was an endan- gered species. Members were drop- ping out, and new members were few. The Air Force had a choice of either trying one last time to motivate the unit into a well functioning body or else close the B.C.C. unit althogether. The Air Force opted tor the former. The results were amazing. Lt. Col. James Thomes was assigned to rebuild the program. Assisting him was Senior Ca- det Jacob M. Broad Jr. Together, they read manuals and regulations to help them gain any information possible in rebuilding the unit. The new program was not easy. Stu- dents were approached whenever an opportunity arose. The unit began to grow. The pace quickened. Today, the unit is one of the fastest growing units in the United States. Associated with the are two organizations-Angel Flight and The Arnold Air Society. These two organizations have added gratly to the support of this outstanding branch of the military. Q fn 91-. 4, .:T'.5, Q 'iam all Ghosts and gobblins appear out of thin air to take part in the Baptist College Halloween festivities. Young and old alike flock to the Halloween Carnival sponsored by the Student Activities Board. Every club and or- ganization on campus usually enters a booth in hopes of raising some money for its members. Everyone has a good time watching, eating, or playing games. The following night begins with a disco. Gobblins of all sorts crawl in to do the Monster Mash and for other gooish goodies. The late night horror flicks follow the disco. These movies have been known to last into the early morning hours. The next morning usually appears without a soul in sight. Halloween is all over, and all the gobblins are fast asleep waiting for next year. A - X Q' .nv Q 33 six sv . i . J . 5? -. . Dr. Odom will kill me if I can't find the H20 for lab and here he comes! . . , . . . Forget panic, l've lost all emotional control! l'm dead! lt's time for lab and I still can't find the l-l2O! ln many cases panic would have overcome any normal person, but being a lab assistant has taught you to remain cool under pressure and to work the pressure to your advantage. The lab assistant's job is incredibly versatile. Their duties include being a dish- washer, tutor, counselor, instructor, and sometimes a genius. For Jodie and JR. Daniels, Tommy Waitt, Robbie Schilling, Kathy McDaniels, Curtis Rollins, Whitney Appleton, Gary Kellum, David Smith, Brant- ley Kuglar, and Melinda Weller lt's just another day in the life of a lab assistant. 3 Q 'Ia19'5ff?ef ' 1' ' 'N W l t i I 5. i 7 I . . Frank Abagnale: Catch Him lt You Can' Frank Abagnale, pronounced Ab- Big-Nail, is one of the youngest and best check forgers the world has ever known. Bouncing checks is not all that he has done to make himself famous. He is the greatest imposter ever to baffle, confuse, and elude police all over the world. Frank grew up in a wealthy family but turned to crime after his parents divorced and his efforts to reunite them failed. At the ripe old age of sixteen, he ran away from home. Despite a photographic memory and an l.Q. of 151, Frank could not find a job worthy of his talents. He discovered that his age and his inex- perience were his major handicaps. To offset this situation, Frank began to take advantage of his appear- ance. For a sixteen year old boy, he had the manner and strans of gray hair character of an older man. This was his ticket into extreme wealth and crime. , Frank found job openings much easier since he always impersonat- ed someone with a very respectable job to provide means to bounce his phoney checks. He has impersonat- ed an airline pilot, a lawyer, a doc- tor, a stock broker, and even an F.B.l agent in search of Frank Abag- nale. This imposter has appeared on the Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas shows. He has written a book called CATCH ME IF YOU CAN and has a movie out by the same name. Today, Frank is a cosultant to some of the world's largest busin- esses. He uses his experience to teach others to stop crime. LJ '--If ,,,..,-f' , ...D iii Crystal Gayle ln Concert On Monday, November 3, the Bap- tist College Activities Board presented Crystal Gayle in concert, Many were surprised at the length of her hair, which almost reached the floor. Each movement of her tiny body put her hair in motion. Her blue eyes twinkled as she sang her most popular song, Don't lt May My Brown Eyes Blue. The entire autidorium cheered. After the concert many students and faculty members remarked that this was one of the best concerts ever pre- sented by the college. A few auto- graph hounds caught Crystal back- stage. She was barely seen through the crowd. She was so tiny, but her music was so powerful and entertain- ing. The evening was one to remem- ber. The weather may not be cold enough for the holiday season, but this does not dampen the Christmas spirit at B.C.C. Decorations may be seen all over the campus as soon as the Thanksgiving holidays end. Christmas cards flood the local post office. Everyone prepares for this much awaited event. As the holidays approach, stu- dents prepar for the annual hanging of the greens sponsored by the Stu- dent Activities Board. Dr Cuttino adds his touch with a musical cele- bration during Convocation. The President's Reception is one ot the last events on campus. We would like to thank Mrs, Hamrick for her fine idea of making this an annual event which brings students and faculty closer together, ek JG B 'g' 1 - L A if L kv .L ,Aff I L, 11 6.74 LV, , '...,f4 --f' ' BCC Christmas V v-'si' 'Q ,lt if if -,,,4 BCC 1981 Homecoming The night of February 11 was tense with excitement as the game began. The gym was packed with specta- tors as the Baptist College Bucs kept a seven point lead over Camp- bell College. This, however, was not all that kept the spectators excited because this was the night ot the eighth annual Homecoming Pag- eant. By half-time, everyone was waiting to see the contestants. Par- ents and friends of the contestants were scattered throughout the crowd. Each contestant stepped out center court as her name was called. Finally, the 1980-81 Queen, Miss Chiquetta Joyce Wright, was introduced and was escorted by Mr. William Powell Ill. The winners were announced: Lisa Harris, fourth run- ner-upg Rita Case, third runner-upg Debbie Ussleman, second runner- up, Paula Baker, first runner-upg and the winner Cheryl Frost, sponsored by the Afro-American Society. Like the results of the Homecoming Pag- eant, the results of the contest be- tween the Bucs and Campbell Col- lege were close. The Bucs won 66 to 64 over Campbell to give BCC the perfect ending for its homecoming. BBQ W -51 A .vb I 1 A 1 ' .fs l ,,, ? 'i' wk..- R nr 'H L V1 1' I ' -1- .1 , if f V J r , V W f 31. You go that way, and l'll go this way and corner him. To off campus, none of this would make any sense unless they recog- nized the tradition of birthdays at BCC. These are the cries that begin every chase scene which is a part of the ritual everyone experiences who does not keep their birthday a se- cret to fellow students. T- ' 5 .gf l The ritual usually begins in the cafeteria when some idiot an- nounces to the public that a particu- lar person is celebrating a birthday on a particular day. The birthday person usually jumps to his for herl feet and makes a mad dash for the cafeteria door. By this time ten or more people are following at his heels. The art of a good chasee is not to get caught. The art of a good chaser is to catch the person and fling him into the reflection pond as .-W .ff f .- v' - far as possible while anxious on- lookers anticipate and cheery every move. Finally, the big finish. The chasee tries to catch anyone linger- ing too long near the edge and pull them into the pond with them. Hours later everyone dunked emerges from hot showers where brown pond mud remains in the drains. Now it's time to clean the clothes, until next time. New Life For Foreign Students This year we are fortunate to have nearly one hundred students from other countries attending the Bap- tist College. These students represent lvlalay- sia, Japan, India, Venezuala, EI Sal- vador, Turkey, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Chile, Brazil, Greece, and China. Other students attending come from lran, Jordan, Kenya, Korea, Kuwait, Saudia Arabia, Trinidad. and Bolivia, as well as Egypt, Cuba and Puerto Rico. Their biggest problem, of course. is home-sickness. They are in an un- familiar land, with new faces, new names, a new language, and a new value system to integrate into their lives. After completing their studies some will return to their home-lands, but some have chosen to stay in the United States. uv? X Jn , ,J 44495.21 f ,, ,... However, some outstand- ing freshmen were recruited and, along with some returning veterans, should form another good team. lt is hoped that the team will maintain their record of never having had a losing season. The schedule this year is a tough one, including some ofthe top relays in the U.S., such as Florida, Dogwood, and the Athletic Attic Invitational. The appoint- ment of Chuck Welty as a fulltime coach will give the team stability and develop some continuity in the program. The team's greatest asset is the number of players available. At the conclusion of the fall practice, the women's and men's teams both consisted of ten players competing for the six playing positions. Twelve of the players are new this year. They bring with them the talent and enthusiasm to start a winning tradi- tion at Baptist College. Coach Welty is optimistic about the season and impressed with the quality of the players that he has to work with. I think our men's team is capable of beating most of the teams on our schedule if they play as well as l expect them to, he says. Our women have improved to the point of being competitive with many of the teams they will play, he adds. Team Places ln State The Baptist College Lady Bucs Volleyball Team finished its second year with a 26-19 record and fourth place in the state tournament, Ame- lia Martin had a lot of praise for her young team. We only had four starters from last year's team, but with their leadership and the hustle and hard work of the newcomers, we played very well. The girls played a tough schedule, but they handled it like an experienced team. With only two seniors leaving, Amelia will have eleven players re- turning. The team's future looks promising with so much experience. l'm really excited and looking for- ward to next season. Last year the team had a .500 sea- son f7,7,2i. This year the team sur- passed this mark to clinch a winning season f8,7,2J! This year's team is more united than previous teams have been. The development of this unity is encour- aged by the family atmosphere that members share with each other. This unity has brought about the urge to strive harder for victory. Credit must be given to Coach Marquez this year. Due to his more rigid requirements and stiffer disci- pline in the program, the team has undergone a great deal of improve- ment. Jeff Kalinaski was the team's cap- tain this year. He, Ron Brady, and Jerry Lefort, all seniors, added ma- turity to the team. Along with Coach Marquez, these three were key tac- tors in this winning season. This year's soccer team was not intimidated by the reputed caliber, bulk, or national ranking of their op- ponents. They were willing to play anybody, anywhere, and give the opposing team their money's worth of great soccer, xihnu .H Ax me lax-1- 'f r59. r -Ne- an .K s- .- - . ,ua si- -tg. I I wr Lately it's become a rare occasion forthe Baptist College basketball team to win two or three games in a season, much less in a row. But this season was different. First year head coach Phil Carter lead Baptist to victory again, The Buc- caneers finished with a 8-19 record, and they closed out the 1980-81 sea- son with a 83-67 thrashing of Georgia Southern. Currently, the Bucs are rid- ing a five game winning streak. That's ,Qin -- if Mio K- LA i Z ff' fi, ,f '-tw' uf, 7 ,, V , X' ,I ffaai , ., 2 1 1 Lf 1 Q 1 f, 1 NN X quill- Wj 2 .,., Victory, Sweet Victory the logest winning streak since the 1970-71 season when the Bucs won as many games in a row. But even more exciting is that the streak will be con- tinued into the 1981-82 season. ,That will give the team and the fans some- thing to look forward to. The winning streak started on Febru- ary 11 with a win of 66-64 over Camp- bell University. From that point on the wins came easy. Georgia Tech was the next victim with the Bucs taking a 74- 51 victory over the ACC school. George Mason made it three in a row in the last home game of the season. The George Mason game was big in other ways aside from the win. It was Eric Tennille and Larry Nesmith's last home game in a BCC uniform. The two seniors were recognized with a stand- ing ovation. lt was also a game in which junior Eddie Talley scored in his K l l 5 4-um-H 'x F' ,g.,-A---'i F0r'The 77th consecutive game. which tied a school record set by Bo Jamison during the 1968-72 seasons. Eddie was awarded a game ball and a place in the Baptist College record books. But, Eddie will also return in the 1981-82 season to continue that re- cord. The bucs then travelled across town to face arch-rival, the Citadel. It looked as though the Bulldogs would end all Bucs! hopes of continuing the winning streak. But, a sensational display of poise and confidence proved to be too much for the cadets: the outcome was 67-62 and four in a row for the Bucs. At that point, there was no question about winning the season finale. Georgia Southern had the unfortunate pleasure of being in the path of a winning ma- chine. The Eagles fell 83-67 to the awesome Buccaneers. t 4 A Truly, Coach Phil Carter has brought victory back to Baptist Col- lege basketball. Gone are the attitudes of defeatg gone are the 31 game losing streaksg gone are the one sided losses: and gone are the doubt that Baptist College could ever win. In place of these are the desire to win big, the five game winning streak, and the belief that the Bucs will increase their win- ning streak in the 1981-82 season! The Lady Bucs got oft to a good start this year, winning their first game 71-48, and that looks like a good omen for the rest ot the sea- son. With only six returning players from last season, Head Coach Ame- lia Martin signed six more girls, two freshmen and four junior college transfers. With the addition of the .-- F JMEQQ nf -f d',w' V , .t 'a --'fiat 1 2' new players and the experience of the returning players, she has a well- balanced team this year. ALL factors point to a great fu- ture with this season as a start.
