These men and women have played a particularly significant and well-executed part in guiding the Baptist College at Charles- ton through the often rough and rocky seas of its maiden voyage. The Board is an active policy-making group in matters that affect us vitally. .lust as no ship can sail safely and pur- posefully without firm hands at the wheel, so no college can move with assurance, purpose, and success without a truly responsible and dedicated Board of Trustees. if 'Ee -A rm B iw -:M . As one line rep- resented physical growth, the other marked the beginning ot growth of another integral part ot the Baptist College, the students themselves. For many students, this registration repre- sented the initial step of the totally unique ex- perience ot college lite. For others it was the beginning of their lite at this particular institu- tion. But tor every student-old, new, or transfer- it was the beginning ot their lite on this, the permanent site ot the Baptist College at Charleston. , gf, ? From the moment a Baptist Col- lege in Lower South Carolina was conceived as a possibility until it became a reality with the fresh- man class of 1965, Dr. John has been an inspiration and a guiding force to all those concerned with the college. So wholly has he put his heart into his work that he has infused both the students and the entire college with the deep love and devotion he feels. For his heart was in his work, and the heart Giveth grace unto every art. Academic Dean Dr. John A. Barry B.A., Th.M., Th.D. An extremely vital and moving influence for the Baptist College at Charleston, our Dean, Dr. Barry, has been a second Dr. John in many ways. To some he is Dr. B. , an inspiring professor, to some, the efficient and productive assistant to the President, and to all, an interested counselor and a sincere friend, who has a true love and concern for the College-its every effort toward the achievement of the highest standards. ' v I Baptist College Golf Team Coach Mel Gibson's team of golfers met some mighty opposition in its travels to Er- skine College, Wilmington College and the Hampton State Meet in Hampton, South Caro- lina. Although the season wasn't as success- ful as hoped, the addition of some new mem- bers to the golf team next year should help in sparking the team's efforts on the fairway. Considering that golf has not been sub- sidized and the members must practice at the Summerville Golf Course, the team has made a fine showing. Awards went to Hugh Fields as Most Valuable Player and Butch Moore who was voted the Sportsmanship Award. , if ...Q -rv W :px 'QW' ff f jg? 4 V as EWR .A ,V W, p gf, p VV . , J A , , 4 x ,y 'JR ' 1 'lf l K X gf 2 V i 2 1 V Al -V V - sa df -f ' uw.. Baptist College Baseball Team B- X44 Q 4 ,M- F Cui .-Y , , -vs. C, f The 1967 season for the Baptist College Buccaneers was full of sur- prises. After starting out strong against Elon College and Brewton Parker in Georgia, the team headed to sunny Florida netting a victory against Missionary College, a defeat under St. Peterburg College and baskets of citrus fruit as proof of their southern road trip. Then came a streak of losses which seemed to never end, but the Bucs came back and slammed their way past August College by 17-O and St. Andrews College in a 17-9 win ......... What a season!!! Despite being handicapped by not having a regular practice field of their own, the team, captained by Johnny Howell, certainly did us proud . Pitcher Freddie Dyches won the Most Valuable Player Award and Billy Morris received the Sportsmanship Award. For his outstand- ing dedication the team honored Coach Tom Dean with a plaque en- graved with the team members' names. f' !.-. 1 Mgr. 34, 1.0.6 r , ',,1,,V' 'S J if '-WM: f, y a .4 ,-W4 W. l ,. 22157 M2 s,TZ!,,1yM'. Welch , - , X, Hwgiwnf Man upon The brink of decision. 153 Sophomore Class Officers The sophomores . . . We wouldn't have believed it . . . Few college sophomores anywhere can claim the kind of education that these have ex- perienced. They learned fast or they were quickly left behind. After the first shock waves of their freshman year when they realized that they were really the pace setters , they settled down to demonstrate amazingly well the adequacy of the uninitiated young Americans to come up splendidly when the real demands are made. They have dem- onstrated leadership, initiative, good humor, loyal- ty, and resiliency, a quality much appreciated by the student body, administration and faculty . . . A yearbook is in- deea different things to different people. lt is an album of pictures and words with cherished memories. The staff and I sincerely hope that no matter what your idea of a yearbook is that it will be enjoyed and become a portion of each person whose heart is within its covers. Thanks to the hard-working staff and especial- ly Miss Thrift, sponsor. This year's Cutlass has a different look when compared with last year's edition. The collegiate size is iust one mention of the progress. Baptist College lite is like being in a world apart from the everyday with its own pressure, tension, and even ioy. Each student must dis- cover peace of mind, order and a personal regularity within the chaos. Realizing this vital factor, the creative and ambitious 'I966-'67 Cut- lass staff presents this yearbook to record the building of our ship, the Baptist College.
