Pray ye therefore the Lord of the har- vest that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Luke 10g2b Praying, counselling, teaching and serv- ing are but a few of the duties which describe the Godly life of the Missions instructor of Baptist Bible Seminary. A veteran missionary from Chile and the Philippines, this dedicated servant of the Lord has been greatly used in counselling and encouraging young people concerning life and work on the mission field. In this day of social and political unrest, we humbly thank God that he has placed such a consecrated prayer warrior on the faculty of Baptist Bible Seminary. With heartfelt appreciation we gratefully dedicate this 1961 Seminarion to our beloved William I. Hopewell. 4, 4 , ? 'il 7 A V f 'WL 7- , K I 1,0 ' Ml ' A N 1' I c 2 K n..a..J 1' -- ,-f' o . Q17 , 1 252151551 little Sentinurg Ofilu ol Thr Pralldnnl Dear Friends of Baptist Bible Seminary: in the broad expanse of Christian endeavor, God employs many workmen and diverse skills. In the bestowal and utilization of Hls own glfts, He works soverelgnly, divide ing to every man severally, as He will. By the working of this sovereign providence, there has been committed to us the ministry of teaching . As defined by our Charter, it is our responsibility to maintain and operate a Seminary providing higher education to prepare men and women for all phases of the Christian ministry. The ministry of teaching ls an honorable vocation. The Christian teacher is llsted with those individuals who are designated as the risen Lord's personal gifts to I-lls people. And He gave some apostlesp and some, prophets: and some, evangellsts, and some, pastors and teachersg for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the mlnlstry. Ephesians 4: 1l,l2l The ministry of teaching is vital to the work ofC1hrlst. This may be illustrated by observing several specific functions of our teaching task. First, our ministry is transmlssive. To perpetuate God's witness in the world, the body of truth set forth ln the Scriptures must be handed on ln each succeeding generation. The Christian pedagogue is charged with this sacred duty. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. CH Timothy 2:2l Then, this ministry is corrective. In meekness instructing those that oppose them- selvesp lt' God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. GI Timothy 22251 Many convictions are but emotional attachments to given proposltions irrespective of their valldlty. The Christian teacher ls a corrector of immature and false opinions. It is his task to loosen the student's grasp on preconceived notions and lead him to rest his confidence ln thus saith the Lord. Finally, this ministry ls redemptive. Dlvlne truth ls presented not merely for truth's sake, but for the equipping of soldlers ofthe Cross. We train young men and women to be bearers of the glad tidings of redeeming grace. A theological school which has no vision of whitenecl harvest fields is an anomaly. In a school such as ours, as ln no other spot on this globe, there must be ears to hear the sob of lost humanity. We covet your prayers. Seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not. Yours in Chr1st's Royal Service, 1 f ff! - 1 fc A t 6192154 f G. I Timothy 4:12 :- nj Miss CHARLTON MRS I KOONS MR. LIGHTNER MR. BENEDICT MISS VERMILYA MR, THE FOLK-HYMN SINGERS The A Cappella choir, which has for the past decade toured the East and Mid- West, has been reorganized into a smaller ensemble known as the Folk Hymn Singers, a more informal group reflecting the spirit of the earlier tradition of madrigal singing. Instead of madrigals, however, they specialize in folk hymns and spiritual songs of the Baptist tradition. Besides having uniquely beautiful tunes, the texts of their time- honored songs are deeply spiritual and moving. The revival of interest in folk music and especially in that of the English-speak- ing peoples has not been overlooked by the churches. Tunes marked traditional are to be found in the hymnals of almost all denominations, the study of this wealth of material presents a challenge to research. Their repertoire also includes special arrangements of more recent hymns as well as some selctions of greater musical complexity. The desire of the Folk Hymn Singers is to exalt the honor of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to be a witness to the world. What wonderous love is this That caused the Lord of Bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul? When I was sinking down Beneath God's righteous frown Christ laid aside His crown for my soul. And when from death I'm free I'll sing and joyful be And through eternity I'll sing on! Arthur B. Scott, Director -. OOO ew Zrainecs for Ehrisf Chaplain Hayes Spiritual SPIRITUAL LIFE CONFERENCE One of the highlights sponsored each year by the Spiritual Life Commit- tee of Baptist Bible Seminary is that of the Spiritual Life Conference held for three days during the early part of the second semester. In February 1960, our hearts were stirred by the messages that Chaplain Hayes of the United States Air Force delivered to the student body. We, as students. will cherish times such as this, when we look back over our years at Seminary. Chapel Zzfc One of the goals of Baptist Bible Seminary is that each student initiate a regular time to be alone with the Lord Jesus Christ. Each student is challenged to begin the clay by having fellowship with Him so that he or she may come to know Christ in a more intimate way. To help us develop a more effective Quiet Time, informal Bible Studies are conducted in the dormitories. Also during both semesters a day is set aside serving as a time for spiritual uplift as well as an inventory of our Christian walk. Through times alone with Him at Seminary, we become better prepared to go into service for Him. A , . ,,,, . , p N .,7ffg. 1 It has proven to be a great time of X N 4 I ' fellowship both for the student and the missionary. The Lord has used such times as these to burden hearts for the mission field. The conference gives blessings unmeasureable to all those who are able to participate in its meet- ings. Last year's conference theme was Come Over and Help Us. It was a time of real heartsearching as students were challenged by the need of the mission field. l23 1 1 .ACES Wa, 9 BUD WILLIAMS - President REV. LOOMIS, Pastor I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 GETTING MARRIED A WORD TO THE WISE . . Choosing a system is like choosing a wife . . . Don't allow yourself to become married to some little inadequate system because it's cheap . . . You wouldn't pick your wife that way. The system you start with is the system you must live and work with the rest of your life . . . It's hard to change . . . Therefore, selection of a system is one of the minister's most important decisions .. . The effec- tiveness of your entire ministry is at stake, Remem- ber the Memory-O-Matic is the only system de- signed to Go Inside Books and index your entire library down to ideas, pages. and paragraphs . . . that's what you must have in any worth while system. YOU MAY LABOR ALONG FOR YEARS before you wake up to what's wrongg and by that time the summer and harvest time of your ministry is past. If your whole system of study is on a cheap foundation, is not your ministry going to be on that same cheap and weak foundation? THE MEMORY-O-MATIC FILING SYSTEM THE MOUNT VERNON FOUNDATION ' I. E.
