Patriotism - What ls It? The meaning of patriotism is in much confusion today. One long-haired American youth explained, as he burned the American flag, that he was being patriotic to his country by protesting the American slaughter of the Vietnamese civilians. Another American, a Roman Catholic priest, claimed as he poured blood on the draft records in a selective service office that he was being patriotic to his country by protesting the needless shedding of blood by the young American soldiers in Vietnam. A third meaning is pictured by a faithful dog, as he lay dying with his bleeding head nestled on the lap of his aged, dead master. Yes, his master had died more than a week previously from a heart attack, suffered while taking a stroll through the wooded area of a park. Now the faithful dog was dying too. Why? ln defending the lifeless body of his master, he had killed two wolves, a vulture, and a rattlesnake. This is Patriotism!

T l.. God, First and Foremost Patriotism includes more than a love for one's country, it involves love and devotion toward God. Americans speak of loyalty, love, devotion, and service to their country. This is all to be commended and recognized because one's country does deserve allegiance and support. But, when Americans forget the principle reason for the birth of their country, when they forget the hand of God in leading men to America, when they forget the Christian and educational institutions established by men of God, and when they forget that God has protected America from enemy invasion, their patriotism is in vain. For without allegiance first and foremost to God, allegiance to America is fruitless. Nlen cannot truly be devoted to America without first being devoted to God.
