One long-haired American youth explained, as he burned the American flag, that he was being patriotic to his country by protesting the American slaughter of the Vietnamese civilians. Another American, a Roman Catholic priest, claimed as he poured blood on the draft records in a selective service office that he was being patriotic to his country by protesting the needless shedding of blood by the young American soldiers in Vietnam. A third meaning is pictured by a faithful dog, as he lay dying with his bleeding head nestled on the lap of his aged, dead master. Yes, his master had died more than a week previously from a heart attack, suffered while taking a stroll through the wooded area of a park. Now the faithful dog was dying too. Why? ln defending the lifeless body of his master, he had killed two wolves, a vulture, and a rattlesnake. This is Patriotism! T l.. God, First and Foremost Patriotism includes more than a love for one's country, it involves love and devotion toward God. Americans speak of loyalty, love, devotion, and service to their country. This is all to be commended and recognized because one's country does deserve allegiance and support. But, when Americans forget the principle reason for the birth of their country, when they forget the hand of God in leading men to America, when they forget the Christian and educational institutions established by men of God, and when they forget that God has protected America from enemy invasion, their patriotism is in vain. For without allegiance first and foremost to God, allegiance to America is fruitless. Students were enthusiastic towards the activities provided through the school societies. A number of skits depicting dorm life, cafeteria rules, and the orchestra were featured. The finale vividly dramatized life's decision between God and Satan. Refreshments were served in the cafeteria after the program. Why, the name itself was a paradox! Few Christians had anything to do with dramatics and drama previously had been anything but Christian. Church plays immediately brought to mind a Christmas play, complete with Nlary, Joseph and the three kings, or an Easter pageant where primary boys with freshly scrubbed faces were cast as angels and arrayed in starched white gowns. The Fine Arts Club put an end to that idea of drama. The Club began to prove again and again that it was indeed possible to glorify the name of Christ through the medium of the stage. Scores of people have come to a saving knowledge of Christ by hearing the messages presented in its plays. Future youth leaders, pastors, and missionaries have been trained to work with their future youth I departments and hundreds of BBC students have been given the opportunity to use their natural talents for the Lord. The success of the Club in helping to change old attitudes toward dramatics in the church is reflected in the sudden rise in the number of Fellowship churches producing full-scale dramas as another means of presenting Christ to the lost. Many have attended these church plays not realizing that they were going to hear the Gospel. The plays presented this year were The Robe of the Galilean, Scrooge, and Once to Die. All were eagerly attended by an audience who could not help but walk away each time with a favorable, though-provoking impression. The student participants gave their all to provide a message in the form of Christian drama. 4' hw f the halloween party Sheet-disguised spooks, cosmetic-covered clowns, and leery, laughing lions crowded into the well-prepared B.B.C. gymnasium. The side lines were adorned with everything from dill pickle and caramel apple stands to the sponge throw and hot seat booths. Oh, yes, and don't forget the kid's favorite --- the dart throw and the cake walk. Everyone wanted to win a hamburger or a big, beautiful cake, equipped with icing. After throwing basketballs, sponges, darts, and wooden rings, it was time to muster enough courage to go through the spook house. Just to behold the bedraggled guides as they came out from leading a tour was enough for some of the less brave. And some of us hemmed and hawed for not less than thirty minutes before entering. Luckily, nobody suffered with more than a quick heart attack. A few of the more daring, and possibly less intelligent, ventured to go through twice! The Senior-class-sponsored Halloween Party was a night to remember. l'm sure that even those who ended up in the corner jail without a ticket to get out will agree that we'd do it again. . .next year! The Guild sponsors a food bank for students vvho may need food. They also provide a furniture bank for students who need furniture while in school. Singing IVlen is comprised of seventeen men whose hard work and persistence have produced a beautiful and unique sound which they use in their desire to serve the Lord. They have sung several times in local church services and chapel services and special meetings here at school. The Singing Nlen took a ten-day tour this year and performed in seven Texas churches, where they proclaimed the Word of God. MK, The BBC Orchestra seeks to bring honor to the Lord through the performance of sacred music. Its performances include annual Christmas and spring concerts, special programs and cantatas in combined efforts with the BBC Choir, and the providing of accompaniment for congregational singing in weekly chapel services. Soloists and ensemble groups are selected from the orchestra to perform both in concerts and in chapel services. In addition to sacred musical literature, the orchestra studies and performs classical and semi-classical selections. Its chief purpose is to spread missionary interest and to pray for our missionaries faithfully and intelligently. After hearing a guest speaker and participating in soul-rousing singing, members break up into individual groups, each identified with one or more of our Fellowship mission fields, to pray and maintain personal correspondence with the missionary families. Speakers in Mission Prayer Band include missionaries home on furlough, mission-minded pastors, and students preparing for the field. This year the films Like a Mighty Army, To Russia With Love, and What Mean Ye by the Service? were sponsored by the organization. As missionaries present the need for laborers in different countries one is confronted with the question, Is this where my Lord wants me to serve him? Wentworth Military Academy proved to be the gridders first and only victory this seasonp and the victory was impressive. At the end of the first half the Patriots were behind 12-6 as a result of missed Wentworth received the ball, and after a few plays was forced to punt. Safety, Howard lVlartin, fielded the punt and raced 55 yards for another Patriot score. Later in the fourth quarter, Roger Holland ran a counter play sparked by tackles and fumbles. Whatever Gary Emery and Coach Taylor said at halftime spurred the Patriots on in the second half. Taking the kickoff to our own 32 year line, the Patriots began to move. Two quick plays up the middle netted big yardage and a first down. Then Quarterback Larry Casillas for 32 yards and another touchdown. The final score was BBC 26 - Wentworth 12: one of the best games in the school's football history. The BBC Patriots basketball season opened with St. Louis Christian College in the Baptist Bible College Fieldhouse. Under the new head coach, David Harper, the Patriots won the first game of the year, 74-66. Enthusiasm ran high as over 1,500 supporters cheered the team to victory. Fieldgoal percentage for BBC was 48'X1. From there the team traveled south to participate in the Tennessee Temple Tournament. Under keen competition, the round ballers finished with one win and two losses. The next regular season ball game was against Calvary Bible College of Kansas City. With fine style the Patriots were able to hand CBC their first loss of the season, 95-85. The high scorer for BBC was Ray Hoeben with twenty three points. After the Christmas break, BBC once again was handed a setback by College of the Ozarks, 96e81. Nik Sanford Brown became the next two victims as the thrashing Patriots charged ahead 91-84 and 74-71 in round ball action. Then two more action packed games rolled around against the old cross town rivals, Central Bible College and Lynchburg Baptist College from Lynchburg, Virginia. Being the two biggest games of the year, the Patriots overcame both rivals in fine style and posted their mid-season record at 9--3. Just as everything was at its best, the fighting BBC'ers were dished another defeat in favor once again of Central Baptist from Conway. The Patriots traveled home with a 72-70 loss tucked under their belts. With this defeat behind them the round ballers struck hard at Bartlessville Wesleyan and Evangel's JV's. Once again the fighting Patriots prevailed for dominion and won both games, 115-79 and 87-76. Next on the agenda was School of the Ozarks ballclub. The BBC'ers were easily overwhelmed and so went on to win 98-79. Overcoming the agony of another defeat, BBC buckled up and handed CBC of Springfield their second defeat in double overtime action. The buzzer finaled the game at 86-83. St. Paul's of Concordia fell a second time also as BBC pulled out a 85-65 win. Calvary Bible College at Kansas City challenged the Patriots I 15 next only to lose in a real squeaker that showed BBC ahead by only one point at the end of the game, 72--71. This type of pressure didn't seem to hurt for in the next game the fighting Patriots came back again in the final seconds to topple Ozark Bible College 82-78. Finalling the season, BBC pitted their talents once again toward the mighty men from School of the Ozarks. All attempts to offset them were in vain as they dominated the .4-.W boards and handed BBC their final defeat of the year 84-66. In the history of basketball at BBC, this is undoubtedly the finest and winningest year. Under the direction of Larry Wofford, Athletic director of BBC, the team was organ- ized and Loren Richmond was chosen to be acting coach. Being a team member was very re- warding, but not all fun. Practices were held from 5:45 to 6:30 every morning and 3:00 to 5:30 every afternoon lexcept weekendsl. lt also required a lot of time on the road traveling to the meets. At the first meet of the season, the team came in first out of five other neighboring Bible college teams. At Calvary Bible College, Loren Richmond set a new course record on the three mile run. He broke the previous record of 17 minutes and 10 seconds, by running it in 16 minutes and 17 seconds. The team grew very close spiritually as they had prayer at every practice and devotions at the afternoon practices. They adopted Victory in Jesus as their team song and Hebrews 12: 1 84 2 as their team verses. Tracts were passed out at the meets and on the way to the meets by team members. As a result of their witnessing, three boys were led to Christ. Another team's coach commented that the BBC team had the best spirit and testimony of any school he had ever seen. The team finished the season 4th in the conference of Bible Colleges, with 7 wins and 5 loses. There are no words to properly evaluate the real contributions that he has made in that capacity to BBC. Dr. Rawlings is rich with ideas and wise in counsel and has worked very closely with Dr. Vick and the administration of the school through the years and with the Fellowshlpin plotting the course for the Baptist Bible College. He has sent a constant flow of students to BBC as well as many life-saving contributions at times when they were most needed. At the National Fellowship lVleeting in Fairfax, Virginia, last year, Dr. Rawlings resigned his position as Vice President feeling he could serve the Fellowship and college more effectively in other capacities. He assured us, of course, that his love for the school was just as great as ever and that he would work just as hard to provide both students and money for its operation, and as a pastor could still counsel with the administration and trustees and freely offer any help that might be required. At the same meeting that Dr. Rawlings resigned his position as Vice President of BBC, he was honored by being elected one of the Directors of the Fellowship. V, . .W f. ... . ,- W, ., lnseparably entwined with the missionary enterprise of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International is the Missions Office located in Springfield, lVlissouri. In the late summer of 1966 a new building became the operating center of this ministry. This three-story structure marks a vast contrast with the one-room office in which the missions department started in 1950 on the newly established campus of the Baptist Bible College. The Missions Office later was located on the third floor of the College Administration Building, but continued growth necessitated moving to the new building which now accommodates the enlarged staff and has room for future growth. Director of Missions is Rev. Jack Bridges. Rev. Bridges organized and pastored for 14 years the Freeway Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, before moving to the missions office. As Director, Rev. Bridges is Chairman of the Missions Committee, supervises the Missions Office, is head of the Missions Department of Baptist Bible College, and is responsible for administering the work of the Fellowship, assisting the missionaries and promoting the work among the churches in every way possible. Associated with Rev. Bridges in directing the Missions Department of our Fellowship are: Don Brown, Assistant to the Director, Carl Boonstra, Associate Director, Len Chavis, Associate Director, and Art Sims, Associate Director. rev. jack bridges The Missions Office is the service agency of the Fellowship. Service to the churches and missionaries is our only business. Our services to the churches include processing gifts, answering correspondence, arranging conferences, scheduling speakers, providing promotional material, and reporting the progress of the work around the world. The bookkeeping department handles gifts of the churches to the missionaries, the Baptist Bible College, the Tribune and other Fellowship related projects. Last year this department processed over S4,000,000.00. Services to the missionaries are varied and include countless details of administrative responsibilities in their behalf.
