Many of you may have seen a new face on campus. He is our new superintendent, Dr. Fred Pasqualc. Dr. Pasquale tries to schedule himself to be on cam- pus during nutrition and lunch, which gives him the opportunity to talk with students. By doing this, he hopes to gain extensive student contact. His concern is students and their education. Michael Rose, School Board President, shares in the giggles. wmm - School Board Vice-President Dorothy Familetti finds time to discuss future plans with seniors. Not only is Dr. Pasquale concerned with student education, but the School Board and assistant superintendent, Merris Hammond, show a genuine interest in that area. The three new board members, Charles Crafts, Abron Evans, and Donald Miller, work well with Dorothy Familetti and Michael Rose, returning members. Giving advice is one job for Board member Charles Crafts. Authoritative Visiting classes is one way for our new superintendent to become directly involved with the students. Abron Evans, Board member, breaks away from a busy day for a classroom stop. 36 Many of you may have seen a new face on campus. He is our new superintendent, Dr. Fred Pasquale. Friends Supervising is part of Mr. Hcslop's job. When the bell rings, one can find Mr. Wolf patrolling the halls. The first smiling face you see as you walk in the principal's office is that of Mrs. Dorothy Campbell. Mrs. Campbell, the principal’s secretary, has been employed by the district for 25 years and has done many services for the students and school. As you go through a door you see our principal, Mr. James llcslop. For those of you who don’t know Mr. Heslop, he’s the one who took away our nutrition earlier in the year. Across the hall in the attendance office, you see the vice-principal’s secretary, Mrs. Letty Thompson. You may be more familiar with her signature, as she's the one who sends out call slips to remind you that you have a class and should occasionally go. Then you sec an empty desk, that of our vicc-principal. Mr. Douglas Wolf. The reason the desk is empty is because he's out in the hall telling people to get to class. Amid all that work is financial consultant and big-help” Mrs. Campbell. Even though they enforce the rules, and we try to bend them, we realize we could not get along without them Mr. Heslop gets the chance to say a few words during a pep assembly. Mrs. Thomson busily keeps the books for student attendance. Mr. Wolf docs get to spend some time at his desk. There arc no hang-ups for Mrs. Claudia Brown in the girls' locker room. f Mrs. Shirley Hilovsky gets down to business as business dept. aid. This year we have a great crew of cafeteria workers, secretaries, and custodians, who without them, the school would not be able to operate properly. It would be a disaster. Think about it. If we didn’t have any cafeteria workers, we wouldn’t be provided with any source of energy to get our bodies through these hard days at BHS. Without the custodians, who else would come when the bell rings twice. Imagine without the secretaries how much paper work would remain stacked in the office. Whether we’ve told you lately or not, we appreciate your helpful services. It’s surprising how Mrs. Kathy Evingcr can smile when she gives you the bad news. People have to get past Mrs. Ruth Smith to see Mr. Hcslop. Keeping you on schedule is Mrs. I.inea Fercbcc in the guidance office. Mrs. Dolores Jones tallies the daily total of absences. Mike, President, starts the meeting by having Karen, Vice-president, lead the flag salute and all other members join in. Maurice, Comm, of Records, reads the minutes from previous meetings. Mr. Rusk, advisor, adds suggestions where necessary. Essentially, A.S.B. is the school government. Any and all school activities have to be approved by the A.S.B. Council. This prevents clubs from having a monopoly on certain functions. It allows all clubs equal chance to raise money. A.S.B. has the responsibility of making many decisions and the officers take their duties seriously. A very active club on campus is CSF (California Scholarship Federation) which holds their annual stationary sale, not to mention their dinner with the theme of Easter. The life members receive pins for being in CSF for four semesters out of their last five. Their good deed for the year is putting on an Easter egg hunt for the kids at the Satclitc School. Then the big field trip comes and off they go to Bcatlcmania! This Book Is Brought To You By . . . This year’s annual staff began its work early. In August, Jaime Hcslop, Laurie Romano, and MS. Marilyn Medorc, journeyed VIA TOYOTA, to the University of California at Irvine to participate in a workshop for annual staffs. Between the time spent sunning at the beach, they managed to learn photo, design, and copy techniques. They transferred their newly gained knowledge to the other San Gorgonian staff members to re-create this year in words and pictures. Sporis Editor Jaime explains the layout to Lisa. Taking a break from summer classes is the group who studied yearbook at UCI. The faculty class sections, Marguerite, Julie, Carolyn, Mary get together. Co-Editors, Linda Christy, try to revive advisor Ms. Mcdore after a deadline. 82 In September, the annual staff kicks off their yearbook sale with a campaign entitled “Impress Yourself.” Each student who buys a book receives an “I’m Impressed” iron on T shirt patch. Annual staff also supplements the book cost by selling ads, patrons, and carnations. Deadlines are hectic and all annual work is kept top secret. The end of the year party is a time for all “staffers” to get together and celebrate the completion of the book. All together now! Nan works on a layout for Choir. That’s the way it’s done,” is shown by some of the annual staff members. Jaime works with her hands and also her mouth. Bottom: M. Adrian, Ms. Medorc, T. Cassadas; Second: L. Stark, C. Colton, L. When researching information about on-campus events, or interviewing the personalities and athletes of the month, the reporters need to know who, what, where, and when, so they can bring accurate reports to the student body. Trailing the efforts of the majestic varsity team, are the outstanding J.V. dribblers, who display a promising future as Varsity C.I.F. participants. Perhaps the statement received from Coach Dennis McKee, “lots of team spirit ...” is what encouraged the boys into their unparalleled rank. Nevertheless, this talented group proves to the Sunkist League to be a team with limitless abilities, and will bring this spirit and talent to the courts in 1979. Going up for a lay-up at the beginning of the quarter is Mario. Pat Echols looks astonished as he sinks the ball. The opponents look on in bewilderment as Steve Zicm puts one away. We got the ball, so let’s go! 1}4 Banning recovers the ball and heads down the court. John Vallcsillo jumps higher than his opponent for two more points. J.V. keeps the ball away from their opponents and the win to themselves. Walking away with a victory. Jump higher! It's a toss up. 135 736 S. Taylor, K. Bunton C. Phillips, L. Rayson C. Wallace, G. Anderson, S. Sanchez What Is Title IX? Following the newly passed federal legislation of “Title IX, a closer look has been taken at girls’ athletics. Prior to the compliance of Title IX, all sports were regarded as a boys’ game, completely neglecting girls from the sport’s scene. This new regulation forbids sex discrimination in education, therefore, since Title IX, girls’ athletics have been on the up-lift. Banning High's girls’ basketball team was soon after talked to and much “in-depth information was gained concerning this malc-coached-all-girl-tcam. “Inspirational is how Coach Jim Anson defined coaching the girls. Their “unskilled abilities” arc refreshing as opposed to boys; as they haven’t gained any bad habits for which he would have to break them. Because of Title IX, much attention has been given to the girls in the manner of new uniforms and improved coaching, therefore. Title IX has been a proven advantage to the girls’ basketball team. Hopefully this will be an incentive for the start of more sports for girls. M. Baca, G. Walton 1 i 1 .-• II i r 13? r s y- iw 4 T. Gillam, T. Whcclock V. Brownlee, L. MeGensy, B. Baseball has been one sport that has been forced to take refuge and resume practice in the gym. Even with the elements to contend with, the Varsity team manages to maintain an admirable standing for the beginning of their quiet season. Despite the weather’s limitations, the Broncos muscle Beaumont and Indio out of two successive victories. With an optimistic outlook on this all-star team. Varsity coach Joel Escobar boasts that the 1978 baseball team should be potentially the strongest baseball team that he has coached. Though new, to the season, the Varsity is basically a well- acquainted group, as nine of the players are veterans. BHS’s baseball teams have a reputation of delivering nothing but superb performances. So it’s no wonder that this team can take it easy and come out on top. After school, in September, you can see the Girls Tennis team strenuously practicing for the long, hard season to come. The season was just that. According to Coach Rodee Chastcen, the overall performance of the team could have been better if the members had not been plagued by injuries and illnesses. Susan Minobe proved to be the Most Valuable Player on the team because of the way she always played her best whether in singles or doubles. The team had many experiences, both personal and group related. As one player said, she found tennis to be “a pain in the arm.” Coach Rodec Chasicen Backing up Karim Zahedi for an assist is Greg Echols. What a forehand! There is one strong doubles team and two strong singles players. While the other players arc perfecting their skill, they are strong in enthusiasm. To make the total team strong, the style played is Round Robin. 149 Good luck to the Class of '79. Deborah Johnson Kim Marcus Mike Rubcl The last of the Mohicans has made it.
