A Vice-Principal who is dedicated to his work and serves as a pattern by which stu- dents can hope to mold themselves into useful men and women is a person deserving of great respect and honor. ' We have dedicated our annual to Mr. James Heslop. He has been working in the Banning School District for the past six years going on seven. He has shown loyalty to his responsibili- ties as Vice-Principal of B.H.S. A witty sense of humor and a cool personality are excel- lent qualities that we students look for in a leader. Mr. Heslop has been an Athletic pirector, Assistant Coach. Coach of Varsity Baseball. Assistant Principal at Susan B. Coombs Junior High School, and is presently the Vice-Principal of Banning High School. Mr. Heslop is a real camping enthusiast and his hobby is golf. He loves chocolate cake, steak, and especially his wife's cooking. He thinks his family and pets are absolutely super!! For those long hours after school he keeps a large bottle of Excedrin. Never-the-less. Mr. Heslop is a man in himself. His fu- ture plans are to continue to work in the administration of B.H.S. 16 •Jfe Senior Cfa SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: BACK ROW: Debbie Anderson, 1st semester President and 2nd semester Vice President; Penny Feucht. 2nd semester President. Representative This year Student Council did their best to make Ban- ning High a better school. They planned a drainage system in the quad, and also an open campus. The governing body only wishes that more students would take an active part in Stu- dent Government. 71 House Of Representatives At the beginning of each year, one student is selected out of each 2nd period class to represent their class in the House of Representatives. The house works closely with the Student Body so that they might carry out the wishes of the students. The origin of all petitions starts in the house and after they have decided on it, it is sent to the student council and then finally on to the school board. The House of Representatives is here to serve the student body. Glenn Courtney, Speaker of the House. ROW 1: T. Brooks, K. Dawson, C. Becerra, C. House, F. Martinez, C. Biggers, M. Mummy, R. Hall. It was through a lot of hard work, late hours, laughter, tears, unanimous reement, and bitter disagree- ment; and finally pride that we bring you this yearbook. The 1971-72 YEARBOOK STAFF 75 Foreign Exchange Student Che of the happiest days of my life was when I found at home, the notice that I could come to Banning. Since then many questions have come to me. What will my new city be like? What are the people like? Finally I arrived and since the time that I have been here I have found that this country and its people are beautiful. I will never forget the things that I have learned to love. I am thankful for the great opportunity that A. F. S., the community and my friends have given me. Banning will al- ways remain in my heart and mind for- ever. 76 FREDY MARTINEZ Miss Banning DEBBIE ANDERSON The Queen of this year’s Stagecoach days is Miss Deborah Sue Anderson. Debbie was crowned Miss Banning on Sept. 29, 1971. The brown haired, blue-eyed queen said that she feels that the most important thing about being Miss Bannir is the experience that she would gain by working with other people. Debbie has been active this year in the Spanish Club; Model UN; A. F. S.; and Interact. She is also the President of the senior class. After graduating, Debbie plans to go to San Luis Obispo School of Architectural Engineering. 77 Marching Bronco Band The band this year has contributed a lot to the school spirit. Brower, tit The 1971 Banning Broncos had an interesting football campaign this season. The Broncos had more potential than the teams of past years. They had many things going for them: Experienced lettermen, a good attitude, and the incentive of player of the week. As usual the Broncos faced strong opposition in the pre-season. Playing schools twice their size, they fought hard and had many defeats, but gained experience. On September 24 the Broncos traveled to Indio for the first game of the season. Both teams fought hard, but the Broncos were defeated 19 to 7. David Wall was named Bronco of the week. Next Pater Noster came to Banning. In this game there were many injuries. Quarterback Greg Mummy suffered a broken ankle early in the game and was lost for the rest of the season. A1 Clark then stepped in and spurred the team to a 6 to 0 vic- tory. Jim Lugo was honored Bronco of the week. On the road again, the Broncos traveled to play the Gladstone Gladiators. This game was the only Saturday game the Broncos have ever played and many will want to forget it. The smog made the game a misery. The Broncos never got started and lost 14 to 0. Leroy Jordan got Bronco of the week honors. 112 On the night of October 1 the Cowboys from Cajon came into Banning. It was a hard game in which the Broncos suffered more injuries. In the 34 to 6 defeat the Broncos ended the pre- league season. Albert Evans received Bronco of the week. Homecoming and all the excitement didn’t seem to help the Broncos as they went down to a 12 to 0 defeat to the San Jacinto Tigers. Dan Whitaker was honored Bronco of the week. The Broncos were determined to pull themselves together. The Broncos had to get back in the race for the league title. On the cold night of October 29 the Broncos traveled to Elsinore to meet the Tigers. By outstanding defense the Broncos won 14 to 6. They had just started their way upward. Leroy Jordan received Bronco of the week. Home again, the Broncos hosted their arch rivals, the Beaumont Cougars. Fighting for the King of the mountain trophy, which has always been in Banning, the Broncos again proved themselves too tough for the Cougars in a 12 to 0 victory. Sam Barfoot received Bronco of the week honors for fine defensive play. 113 Banning, now in contention for the league title, found themselves fighting for first place on the night of November 12 against the Rim of the World Scots. Rim, who had slaughtered every team faced this year, slipped by the Broncos 12 to 0. Carey Mcllor received Bronco of the week honors for his performance of blocking on the line. 14 The last game of the year for the Broncos was at Perris. The Broncos and the Panthers fought hard and long. At the end it was a tie 0 to 0. Bronco of the week honors were shared by Oliver McKee and Ray Lara. I After this game the Broncos finished the season with a 3-5-1 record. It's only speculation as to how the Broncos would have fared without the numerous injuries. The 71-72 season is over and the injuries will heal. Watch out next year.
