Academics -6 Communication: Key Word English is a required course of all stu- dents attending Banning High. English I covers the language essentials: spelling, grammar and composition. The aim of English II is to increase proficiency in punctuation, vocabulary and literary appreciation. English III augments read- ing comprehension skills and apprecia- tion of the American Literary Heritage. Along with a review of grammar essen- tials, English IV stresses practices in composition and essay writing and high- lights of the English Literary Heritage. ' A reading program is part of the English Department and is taught by Mr. Rojas, a new faculty member. The program stresses speed reading, developing perceptual abilities, developing compre- hension abilities and word and number recognition. When I read some of the rules for speaking and writing the English language correctly, sf think= Any fool can make a rule And every fool will mind it. Henry D. Thoreau
