Academics 16 Striving For Physical Fitness The main purpose of physical education is to bring about a state of physical fitness in students. This state is strived for through a program involving the following athletic activities: sit-ups, push-ups, 50 yd. dash, 600 yd. run, softball throw, standing broad jump, and conditioning exercises. Some of the sports engaged in to develop skill and coordination are softball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, gymnastics and basketball. Every student, from ninth through twelfth grade, participates in some type of fitness program. Art And Languages There are three foreign languages taught at Banning High: Spanish, French, German. German is the newest addition to the language department. Taught by Mr. Cutler, its areas of study include grammar, composition, literature, pronunciations and translations. Spanish I-IV also covers grammar, pronunciation, reading and translations. The teacher is Mrs. Doyle. Headphones are used regularly as a part of the lesson, Every language is a temple, in which the soul of those who speak it is enshrined. Oliver Wendell Holmes Academics 45 A new faculty member, Mr. John Gonzalez, is the instructor of French I through IV. The curricula consists of grammar, reading, and translations. Part of French III and IV's reading requirements is LA PESTE (The Plague), by Albert Camus. The enrollment of the language courses is a general mixture of grades nine through twelve.
