Art And Languages There are three foreign languages taught at Banning High: Spanish, French, German. German is the newest addition to the language department. Taught by Mr. Cutler, its areas of study include grammar, composition, literature, pronunciations and translations. Spanish I-IV also covers grammar, pronunciation, reading and translations. The teacher is Mrs. Doyle. Headphones are used regularly as a part of the lesson, Every language is a temple, in which the soul of those who speak it is enshrined. Oliver Wendell Holmes Academics 45 A new faculty member, Mr. John Gonzalez, is the instructor of French I through IV. The curricula consists of grammar, reading, and translations. Part of French III and IV's reading requirements is LA PESTE (The Plague), by Albert Camus. The enrollment of the language courses is a general mixture of grades nine through twelve. Academics 14 Cultural Courses—Music, There are three outstanding choirs on campus under the direction of Mr. Jensen. They are the Madrigals, Acappella and the Girls' Choir. The choirs learn about various types of music and learn how to use the voice properly. Some of the programs they sponsor and participate in are: Christmas program, Sip 'n Sing, musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie , Bacculaureate, Vocal Festival at Upland and a Choral Festival in Riverside. The Girls' Choir a nd Acappella also perform at various service clubs. Work thou for pleasure! Sing or paint or carve The thing thou lovest, Though the body starve. Kenyon Cox The main objectives of Art I-IV are to orient students in the principles of design and elements of art, to encourage and develop talented skills, and to stimulate originality. The Crafts course has students working with leather, ceramics, weaving, mosaic tile and other hobby materials. Advanced art students aid in the publicity of school events.

Academics 16 Striving For Physical Fitness The main purpose of physical education is to bring about a state of physical fitness in students. This state is strived for through a program involving the following athletic activities: sit-ups, push-ups, 50 yd. dash, 600 yd. run, softball throw, standing broad jump, and conditioning exercises. Some of the sports engaged in to develop skill and coordination are softball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, gymnastics and basketball. Every student, from ninth through twelfth grade, participates in some type of fitness program.
