He was a man with many great qualities and be- cause of this, he was loved by all those who knew him. He was the man who taught us to take pride in ourselves and in our school. He was the man who taught the boys he coached and other students to work together to reach a common goal. He taught us that hard work has many values, now and in the future. He was the man who brought pride to a peak at Banning High School. He went about this in a way that only he could, The Dudney Way . Now that Mr. Dudney is gone, we must be the good people that we are and could be. We must be the good people that he so often talked about. Academics -6 Communication: Key Word English is a required course of all stu- dents attending Banning High. English I covers the language essentials: spelling, grammar and composition. The aim of English II is to increase proficiency in punctuation, vocabulary and literary appreciation. English III augments read- ing comprehension skills and apprecia- tion of the American Literary Heritage. Along with a review of grammar essen- tials, English IV stresses practices in composition and essay writing and high- lights of the English Literary Heritage. ' A reading program is part of the English Department and is taught by Mr. Rojas, a new faculty member. The program stresses speed reading, developing perceptual abilities, developing compre- hension abilities and word and number recognition. When I read some of the rules for speaking and writing the English language correctly, sf think= Any fool can make a rule And every fool will mind it. Henry D. Thoreau While we read history we make history. George William Curtis The Social Studies Department is divided into Government and Economics, World History, Geography and Humanities. Government Economics is a combined course. It emphasizes the interrelation- ship of the Legislative, Judicial and Executive branches of our Federal Government, money, insurance, banking, investment, and government expendi- tures. The sophomore World History classes study the history of the Western Civilization and discuss such controver- Academics sial subjects as the evolution of man, communism and the social revolution. The Geography students study the influence of climate and typography on human welfare and the economic inter - relationship among nations through foreign trade. Humanities, primarily a philosophy course, covers the philosophy of Western Civilization from Greece to modern times. A study in comparative religions is also covered. Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of our science. Emerson Math And Science Many of the math courses offered to students are college preparatory. The ones which fall into this category are: Algebra I ' X , Geometry X , Math Analysis, Algebra I and II. The main aim of the math courses is to develop students' skill in deductive logic and to expand their knowledge of the properties and functions of a number field. This is done through the use of graphs, expo- nents, axioms, sign numbers, lines and angles. Nearly all of the classes have a mixed enrollment. Another course that has a mixed enroll- ment, but isn't college prep, is General Math. Chemistry Science, Biology, Chemistry, and stresses modern theories through the Physics. General Science, a freshmen use of chemical experiments. Physics, course, is a lab approach to the physical an all seniors course, studies mechan- properties of matter. Life Science is a ics, sound, light and electricity. beginning course in biological sciences. Academics 10 Woodwork, Metalwork, Drafting, and Auto Shop are the courses which make up the Industrial Arts program. Drafting is basically a mechanical drawing class. Students are taught to understand drawings as they are used in industry. General Metals covers machine work, sheetmetalwork, foundry, and welding. Machine Metals is a vocational program designed to place students in the machine industry. Students learn the operation of machines that are used in industry. Ah , to build, to build! That is the noblest of all the arts. Longfellow Academics 11 In Woodworking, students learn a broad variety of basic hand tool skills and the operation of woodworking machinery. Stu- dents are encouraged to use their own ingenuity. Auto Shop places emphasis upon developing the students’ interest in proper maintenance and operation and understanding how the various units of the automobile work. There are several girls enrolled in industrial arts. Academics 12 Preparing For Future Homes A wide range of subjects is covered in the homemaking classes. In the unit on food, nutrition, food preparation, ‘ desserts and foreign foods are studied. The clothing unit has tips on dress and material selection and sewing skills. A study in child care includes observation and understanding of a child's behavior and characteristics. Work in the Head Start Program is a part of this unit. The housing unit has three projects , that require students to furnish a room or an apartment economically. Of the 137 students enrolled in these classes, seven of them are boys. Academics 13 Banning High is fortunate in that it has a very extensive business education department. department. The department is divided into Typing I and II, General Business, Shorthand I, I, Bookkeeping I, Office Occupations Laboratory A, Office Occupations Laboratory B and Clerical Office Practice. Some of the students enrolled in these courses are only interested in learning how to type, while others are interested in learning all the basics of a business career. Most of the classes have an enrollment of students from every grade. Bookkeepers at work, Fundamentals Of Business 160 words per minute? Academics 14 Cultural Courses—Music, There are three outstanding choirs on campus under the direction of Mr. Jensen. They are the Madrigals, Acappella and the Girls' Choir. The choirs learn about various types of music and learn how to use the voice properly. Some of the programs they sponsor and participate in are: Christmas program, Sip 'n Sing, musical comedy, Bye Bye Birdie , Bacculaureate, Vocal Festival at Upland and a Choral Festival in Riverside. The Girls' Choir a nd Acappella also perform at various service clubs. Work thou for pleasure! Sing or paint or carve The thing thou lovest, Though the body starve. Kenyon Cox The main objectives of Art I-IV are to orient students in the principles of design and elements of art, to encourage and develop talented skills, and to stimulate originality. The Crafts course has students working with leather, ceramics, weaving, mosaic tile and other hobby materials. Advanced art students aid in the publicity of school events. Art And Languages There are three foreign languages taught at Banning High: Spanish, French, German. German is the newest addition to the language department. Taught by Mr. Cutler, its areas of study include grammar, composition, literature, pronunciations and translations. Spanish I-IV also covers grammar, pronunciation, reading and translations. The teacher is Mrs. Doyle. Headphones are used regularly as a part of the lesson, Every language is a temple, in which the soul of those who speak it is enshrined. Oliver Wendell Holmes Academics 45 A new faculty member, Mr. John Gonzalez, is the instructor of French I through IV. The curricula consists of grammar, reading, and translations. Part of French III and IV's reading requirements is LA PESTE (The Plague), by Albert Camus. The enrollment of the language courses is a general mixture of grades nine through twelve. MEXICO A guest speaker in Spanish, Academics 16 Striving For Physical Fitness The main purpose of physical education is to bring about a state of physical fitness in students. This state is strived for through a program involving the following athletic activities: sit-ups, push-ups, 50 yd. dash, 600 yd. run, softball throw, standing broad jump, and conditioning exercises. Some of the sports engaged in to develop skill and coordination are softball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, gymnastics and basketball. Every student, from ninth through twelfth grade, participates in some type of fitness program. Strader On Stage Sports 24 p= Re ed With the long trip to Rim of the World the champion Broncos relaxed before their game with the Scots. But the relaxation didn't last. The Scots proved to be worthy opponents, but shortly the Broncos took control and proved to everyone that they were determined to go to C.F. with a 35-7 victory. In the league opener against the Beaumont Cougars, the Bronco defense showed their supporters a smashing style of their defense f that was to go on throughout the rest of the season. The Bronco offense seemed to be fired up for the opener also. Their running and passing attacks led the Broncos to a 26 - 0 victory. Sports 25 In the Broncos clash with the San Jac Tigers all pass- ing attempts failed. But the Broncos running attack more than made up for this. When the Broncos let loose their running backs they managed to tally up 354 yards rushing. This terrific display led the Broncos to a 19 - 7 win over the Tigers. Despite the mud soaked field the Broncos managed to hold their undefeated record by sinking the Elsinore Tigers by a score of 27 - 13. Even though the weather seem- ed to dampen the Bronco rooters, the team wanted this game most of all! Their enthusiasm shown brightly through the rain and gloom. This victory eet = gave the Broncos a 5 and 0 , aes, record for the season. With the excitement of Homecoming at hand the mighty Broncos went onto the field in high spirits that weren't at all dampened. Being led by a strong defense and an equally powerful offense the triumphant Broncos went to the dance with a 26 - 6 victory behind them at the cost of the Perris Panthers. Bonnie and Clyde? - W ‘ HIGn SCHoo | ADMIN syn a7 0, The outta site Broncettes! ! The 1968 fun-filled Homecoming Week (Oct. 28-Nov. 1) was a smashing success! Grub Day, Costume Day, the three-legged race, Color Day and a parade were some of the activities in which BHS's students participated and enjoyed. Even a few faculty members had fun by entering the pie-eating contest. Ain't we sweet?!!? On Stage Sports 28 Homecoming Victory! A smashing victory from our Homecoming Game led us to the peak of our Homecoming Activities. The Perris Panthers thought their old fashioned single-line defense could put us under, but the tables were turned. The final score was a beautiful 26-6. On Stage Sports 29 Queen Bea and Court The identity of the Homecoming Queen was kept a secret until half-time of the Homecoming Game. Princess Janet Queen Beatrice Princess Bernie Princess Valerie Princess Robyn On Stage Sports 30 The annual Homecoming Dance was held on November 1, 1968 in the cafeteria, which was gayly decorated to follow the Roaring 20's theme. Everyone had a rocking time by dancing to the music of the Jades, who blew everyone's mind with their soulful beat. On Stage Broncos In CIF On Friday, November 22, 1968, an overflow crowd poured onto the local gridiron to watch the Broncos clash with Apple Valley for CIF honors. What the crowd ended up seeing, after Banning took the opening kickoff, was a fast mov- ing, hard hitting Sun Devil team bury the Broncos by a score of 34-6. Arthur Roberson carried the ball 53 yards for the lone Banning score. The Broncos didn't seem to have had the snap, nor the strength, that they had displayed during the ‘ regular season. The Banning Broncos entered the CIF play-offs with a record of eight wins and one loss, counting both league and non-league games. This outstanding record earned them the title of De Anza League Champs. Varsity Team Combined Standing: Danny Enriquez, Bruce Mills, George Brown, Norman Johnson, Jay Jahn, Dewayne Austin, Frank Malone. Kneeling: Steven Hill, Manager, Dave Echols and Coach Fey. The Broncos’ two win and eight loss record may not seem impressive, but their games were some of the best ever played. Each one was packed with fast-paced, thrilling action from beginning to end. Each team member put forth his best and utmost playing ability. Even though the team didn't garner very many victories, the boys retained their enthusiasm, determination and sportsmanship throughout the season. Coach Fey's excellent management shown through in every game and was a contributing factor to the team's outstanding performance. The team also acquired use of the forest green blazers, worn for the first time this year by the varsity football team, on game days. Due to Coach Fey's guidance and the boys’ talents, they ended up with an impressive record of ten wins and no losses. They were rewarded with a record of seven wins and three losses. The } experience they gained this year will will be a big help in next year's com- petitions. Every year the Block B picks a queen and a court to reign over the tourney. This year they are from L. to R: Leina Enriquez, Shirley Lewis, Joan Shelton, Queen, and Terresa Catozzi. The winning team in the tourney was San Jacinto. In the 17th Annual Block B Tourney, 8 teams participated. Out of these teams, 5 players were chosen to be on the all- tourney team. Whitham, Miss Coombs. If you have even seen the Girls' Tennis Team in action you would certainly see a display of great team work. Miss Coombs' leadership has been a great contributing factor to the girls' top quality performance. She has added a lot of sparkle to the band's performances with her expert handling of the baton. A highlight of BHS's football games was watching high- stepping drum major, George Steward, lead the Banning Bronco Marching Band onto the field.
