He con- Stantly strives to stimulate the student to ask questions, par- ticipate in discussions, and in- volve themselves. He spends | late hours at night planning, probing and searching for new ways to make the subjects in- teresting to his students. He strongly believes that if a stu- dent can see both sides to an issue and become involved they will have a much better under- Standing of it. His family life centers around his wife and two small children. It is very important to them to do things together and their favorite pastime is camping anywhere from the desert to the mountains. Dur- ing leisure hours at home he ( enjoys taking pictures of his family and their activities. Photography is his favorite hobby and he also instructs a photography class at BHS. His interest in photography began when he received his first cam- era while in second grade. He continued to pursue this hobby Mr. Michael Rose in high school and college. Mr. Rose attended Chaffey Jr. College for two years and then transferred to the University of Redlands. He graduated in 1962 and in 1967 earned his Master's degree. While at Redlands he was active in debate and was on the yearbook staff. At the present, he is continuing his studies at the University of California at Riverside. 2 Dedication Banning High School owes a great deal to Mr. Rose. It is due to his ef- forts al one that we have the video tape program. It was also Mr. Rose who developed the team teaching idea and helped turn it into a reality. Mr. Rose has taken over the responsibility of conducting, and providing for two top quality dark rooms. Whenever there is a project you will always find Mr. Rose involved -- especially if it's for the stu- dents. He is the main reason Banning High School has many programs, proj- ects and facilities that other schools lack. But above all, he is ALWAYS there to help us when we need someone. Thank you, Mr. Rose, from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for Banning High School and for us! Bian 3 Dedication FOREWORD There are many doorways in life to pass through. Some doors may lead to success and fortune while others to failure and despair, nevertheless, it is only up to us to open the doors. It is as students, that we first realize the many choices we have to make our life what it is and what it will be. Many doors have been passed through in 1967-68 and the re-counting of the memories are not only within these pages, but are also in our hearts. TABLE OF CONTENTS RV LE ie 6 ee oe x. Dr. Goldsmith, who is under 30 years of age, has also given several lectures in the Los Angeles area. He illustrated his point of view by telling about first hand experience he has had while dealing with patients who have taken such drugs. He also told of the organic effects that drugs have on the human body. The assembly was broken into two parts. The first half was a lecture, and the other half was a question and answer session at which only the students were present. 6 - Student Life BHS ASSEMBLIES Catalina Cappy Jan Nataro, better known as Catalina Cappy bégan his career as a clown in Europe, traveling with circuses through- out the Balkan countries. Arriving in the U.S. and after serving with the Air Force for a period of four years, he returned to the Big Top when discharged. He traveled with the Pollack Bros. Circus which eventually brought him to the West Coast. For two years he starred in Hollywood as a personality of his own TV Show The Adventures of Patches and Spunky the Bear. Cappy acts as host Captain aboard the S.S. Catalina, entertaining the youngsters and adults during the daily run between Los Angeles harbor and Santa Catalina Island. You will recognize Cappy by his special trademark: a three-leaf clover on the tip of his nose, denoting a third generation clown in his family. Activities 17 The fifteenth annual Invita - tional Basketball Tournament was held December 18-21. The tourney was initiated in 1953 by the coaches of the then, Riverside County League. Originally, there were only eight teams; now there are six- teen. The sixteen teams are invited to play in the four day tournament. The four days are needed because the C.1.F. rules prohibit any high school team from playing more than one regulation-length game a day. This year Hemet triumph- ed over Yucaipa in the final championship game, putting Yucaipa in second place. 18 Activities BLOCK B TOURNEY ram scree ‘eae “ty é All-tourney team Senior Princess, Debby Thompson The Block B Queen and princesses are chosen by secret ballot by members of Block B. The dance, which was the climax of the Homecoming week activities, was sponsored by GAA. The girls in GAA picked the theme for the dance, Evening Fantasy , which had to follow the theme for Homecoming, made and sold the tickets, and decorated the cafeteria. The In-Tymes was the band selected to play at the dance. 20 What happened Sopko, lost your date ? Hang on to what you've got...! SPINSTER’S DANCE Time, effort, and money was spent by girls to help make the Spinsters' Dance the most outstanding dance on the campus. Girls spent hours preparing for this exciting and unforgettable even - ing. The theme this year was Winter Wonderland.” Coordinating all of the details was Mrs. Wood, the sponsor of the Girls' League. She spent many hours helping plan the memorable evening for the stu- dents of Banning High School. =a We've gotta get outta this place... King Ronnie with date Cheryl Thompson. g g p g Ty ps 21 OUR FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT Arlette Meyer It was Banning High School's privilege this year to have among its students, Arlette Meyer from Grand-Duchy of Lux- emberg. Her relaxed and ready sense of humor was a refreshingly new and educa- tional experience for her classmates. In a broader sense, observing her has shown us that differences of distance, language, and traditions are not necessarily barriers in interpersonal relationships. OUR AMERICAN ABROAD STUDENT On January 3, 1968, Gail Babb received word from New York that she had bee n chosen to spend the next year in Brazil. Needless to say, she was surprised and thrilled, as were her friends and class- mates. Although we will miss her in the coming year, we can think of few students more deserving of this honor and opportu- nity than Gail. Good luck, and all our best wishes!! Gail Babb 23 Right after school let out last year our var- sity pepleaders began preparing to make this year the best BHS has ever seen. They attended Pepleading Camp during the summer to polish up their routines. Besides getting in their weekly quota of practice hours, the cheerleaders and songleaders provided the banner that the team ran through at the beginning of each football game. The pepleading squad also provided the football team with 20 lbs. of fresh, sliced oranges every week. These oranges were paid for and prepared by the girls themselves. The oranges were kept in ice in the locker room for the team during half-time. To give the team a big send-off for games out of town, the cheer- leaders would decorate the team bus. Our pep- leaders have truly made this year the best year BHS has ever had. SONGLEADERS AND CHEERLEADERS Activities 24 J. V. Cheerleaders from L to R are: M. Lacy, N. Thompson, K. Beal, and S. Lewis. A box-boy at Alpha Beta, Sandi's hobbies include cooking, sew- ing, and learning to water-ski. A senior this year, our new Miss Banning plans to attend Chapman College and later become a phys- ical and speech therapist, working with mentally retarded children. Sandi entered the Queen Scheherazade contest in Indio, and will also enter the Orange Show and Farmer's Daughter contests. We wish her the best of luck! STUDENT LIFE DOORWAYS TO STUDENT-LIFE Student life can best be compared to a mosaic, composed of all the activities, conflicts, achievements, failures and inspiration that fill the lives of Banning High students. Not only is student life the dances, games, and lunchtime conviviality, it is running the 600, worrying about finals, enduring dull classes, and some- times finding something or someone un- expectedly meaningful and interesting. Recreation period in the Banning Penitentiary compound, Sheriff John and his Lunch Brigade 101 Student life A NEW DOORWAY TO LEARNING | This year Banning received one of the newest innovations in education-a video tape recorder. This television unit will enable teachers to record broadcasts of television shows that pertain to the subject matter of their classes, such as class discussions, and lectures. It can be used in the science department to take close up pictures of objects; in the speech classes to tape speeches and play them back, to enable the speaker to hear himself and his mistakes; in the wood and auto shop classes to take pictures so that the entire class can see them at once. This machine can also be used to tape school programs, assemblies, and plays. They can be played back immediately so that actors can hear their mistakes and profit from them. It can also be used to record foot- ball, basketball, and baseball games. Players will be able to see films of their games at a much lower cost than previous methods and sooner than they ever could before. The tele-communications class and the speech club will be sponsoring a television program to be called BHS-TV, which will be broadcast over the Banning cable. Student Life - 103 Oh! My aching back!
