NICOLET 5 BANNING, CALIFORNIA 9222 VAs PUBLICHED BY THE CTUDENTC OUR, OF BANNING HIGH SCHOOL AGE PANNING, CALIFORNIA FOREWORD The 1965-66 San Gorgonian staff has chosen “Our Age” as the theme for this year’s book. “Our Age’ symbolizes our world; the world of cars, steadies, friends, school, and work. School life is a part of our age. As the years pass we will want to look back to this book and see the school life as it was in “Our Age”. The staff wishes to represent this school life throughout the book and show the loyalty to Banning High as expressed in our: ALVA MATER Hail to our dear old Banning High, We'll sing your praises to the sky. We will be loyal to thee ever, Banning High. When all our high school days are through, We'll look back to you, We will be loyal to thee ever, Banning High. oa © et 6 Ce @ C eo wm © € © 6 © 6 6 @ © © © © ‘9 6: 0) ‘© o@ 6 6 @ © Bs 8s @. 6 Oe 8 2 oe 6 4 Se ee Ue 8 le Ue Organizations meer cena ett ee eee i a ToT ms oo, epee nein oetinerre Renan bee act caer EIS eee ee eee re Rs ia Pe rik ine, Penge eae rants eee ssa cre eae ee ere Tee, nee eee hire es Severs Cun oo a debe ectonads ae nasesarend Guede MR. FORREST ROUNCAMILLE Mr. Forrest Rounsaville was born in Tusca, Oklahoma, 1929, and graduated from high school at Atoka, Oklahoma in 1947. He attended several colleges on football scholarships. He graduated from Eastern A M Junior College and then went to Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee, Okla., on a basketball scholarship. From there he went to the army, and to Japan. While in the army he went through OCS and came out as a lieutenant. Then, after the army, he went to OSU at Stillwater, Oklahoma. After one semester at OSU he went to Southeastern State and graduated from there. He taught as a coach in Texas and then moved back to Oklahoma University, and received a masters in guidance and counseling. He has been with the Banning Schools for the past four years, and has done a tremendous job counseling our students. Mr. Rounsaville, we the students of Banning High extend to you our gratitude and wish for you continuing prosperity. ZzAo-4560—- 0 m Oo Student attitude is represented by our pepleaders: spirit, enthusiasm, and happiness. We show spirit as we cheer our teams to victory; we show enthusiasm as we strive for our goals; and our happiness comes with our accomplishments in sports, school work, and achievements. Rati. Whether from around the world, across the nation, or from our local Banning, the friends we make now, in high school, will be remembered in years to come. In our studies and work we hope to prosper. In our every action and in our spirit we hope for better friendships. Even in our doubt there is hope; in that question everyone asks: What will the future bring for me? and in asking this question we hope for a bright tomorrow. Credit UPI SPORTS FOOTBALL The Broncos came in like a lion this season after tying San Jacinto 12-12, beating Ac- quinas 43-13, and then vanquishing the mighty Hemet 19-6. The first loss of the season came when they fell prey to the Cougars. Head coach Menzia and assistant coach Be- thel were soon to whip the boys into shape for league play, however, and the team seemed to make a habit of ruining other schools’ homecomings by beating them on the gridiron. The Broncos started out strong in league play, winning the first three games, but were slowed by Coachella and finally stopped dead by Yucaipa. Still, an overall 5 win—3 loss record isn't bad. The Rajas, who seemed to have grown soft from a life of camel riding and date picking, probably would have been run deeper into the ground if it hadn’t been for the 160 yards in penalties against Banning. Richard Villapando Wendel Leary Tony Reyes Ernie Florez Carlos Rivera a Charlie Juarez Edward Laura 43 Jim Hallman Steve Hazel David Myers After a pleasant bus ride to Palm Springs, the Broncos were ready to make the Indi- ans sorry that horses were ever brought to the North American continent. The good old Mickey Mouse came through, bringing Banning their first score in the first quarter and a halftime lead of 7-0. In the second half, the Broncos really got moving and scored in each quarter—both times by air- mail special delivery. Ron Holton Allen Jayo George Strange Dan Christianez Mike Garcia On the night of November 12, came the Broncos’ eighth game and second loss. Coachella had possession of the ball for more than their share of the first half and | am sure this had something to do with the half-time score of 7-0, Coachella. When the Broncos got the ball in the second half, though, they didn’t dilly dally. After scoring their first touchdown of the game, the Banning eleven was inches short for the extra point conversion, That didn’t stop the Broncos— no sir. Going for broke with fourth and nine on their own 45 got them to the Arab 11 with one minute to go. When the next play failed, it meant defeat. BANNING 1 é And then there was the Yucaipa game. Remember how the T-Birds were leading by three touchdowns at halftime and nobody thought we had a chance in the world of catching them? Then in the second half we scored on a 35-yard pass from McCann to Haworth, followed by a 20-yard pass from Rubus to Geter which was good for another six points. And when the final buzzer sounded we discovered we'd been outscored by two points in the second half. So ends one more season of football. But what about those JV’s who only lost one game this year? With many of those lads moving up to varsity next year, we can look forward to a promising season this coming fall. Ken Irwin Managers Mike Renner and Kenny Baca Coach Heslop did a great job of keeping the Banning line one of the best in the league. 45 Linda Carper Karen Rubalcava Sally Burson When the action between the Bron- cos and their opponents grew dull, one could always focus his attention on the cheerleaders. m j q 5 fe) [) I Marie Haworth Barbara Sevier 46 Susie Piech Helen Baca Jenell Moore The songleaders were always on hand to do those neat little things with their pom poms and lead us in songs which no one ever sang. TRACK There seem to be a lot of boys interested in track this year and the Bronco trotters, under the coaching of “the big man with the minor sports’, Louis Robinson, are coming along quite nicely. Although it is a sport that requires a lot of training, t here is very little glory to running around a dry, dusty track when no one is watching. | hope that these boys will have more support in the future. Second Row: Coach Robinson, If we could say that success is a measure of improvement over past performances, we could say that the cross country team had a successful season, with two of the Banning workhorses placing in the DVL finals. Cross country gives the athletes who care for football a sport to participate in during the fall. TENNIS To quote the coach of the tennis team, Mr. ad Rose, “We're building this year.” You can draw J r your own conclusion as to what he means by this. San Jacinto Junior College this year, that left the job of coaching our varsity squad to Mr. Heslop, who certainly more than proved his coaching abilities as football line-coach. SPORTS FOOTBALL It can be said that the JV football squad had a very successful season this year. After losing their first game and fighting their second to a scoreless tie, the junior broncos went on to six straight wins and a first place rating in DVL. This seems to be a good omen as far as next year’s varsity is concerned. s First Row: Charles Angelis, Gary Navin, Marvin Davis, David Romberg, Steve Swendler, Burton King, John Linn—Manager. Kneeling: Sam Bullard—Manager, and Coach St. Marie. The JV’s looked really promising this year and fared slightly better than the varsity. Mr. St. Marie seemed to do a fine job in his first year as a high school athletics coach, working with a team that even beat the Redlands JV squad. These boys usually put on a good show, as you probably noticed if you ever happened to get to the gym before the varsity game started. 60 —_ Standing: Steve Lewis, Kenneth Husby, Larry Becerra, Alonzo Brown, Marvin Davis, Carl Loche, John Lario, Burton King. The Banning downtown paper now runs its issue on a “paste-up” instead of the old, less-effective “hot lead.’’ The Journalism Staff writes their stories, types them and then sends them down to the Record-Gazette. There, they are typed for “column’’ use. The students of the Mrs. Varney newspaper staff then paste-up their own edition; Susie Piech and Helen Baca AQvisor pictures, stories, and fillers. Their paper comes Co:Editors out on a bi-weekly edition. The BHS Journalism staff also puts out a mimeographed issue bi-weekly for the entire student body. Each week, page editors are assigned and are in charge of getting out their own page on time. On the day that the page comes out, the entire staff staples it together. Each semester a different set of reporters are assigned to the opposite issue they have previously been working on. This gives the staff an opportunity to work with both sets of issues. We, the co-editors, along with our advisor, Mrs. Ruth Varney and all the reporters would like to thank students, teachers and warents for their co-operation.
