In the following pages we have tried to por- tray BHS as a small compact community independent in itself, We feel the cover is quite typical of this year’s San Gorgonian; modern, yet pleasing to the well rounded student. In our annual we have tried to get away from tradition, show a wider range of student life, and innovate a few new ideas. We, the staff, are very proud of it and we’re sure you will be too. DEDICATION To you, Mrs. “Jo” Noble, the staff of the nineteen sixty-four San Gorgonian dedicate this yearbook with appreciation for the fine job you have done in the past eleven years. For the past six years, as head of the “Food and Health Administration” of Our Town, you have done an excellent job in coordinating the cafeteria staff in the ) J 8g preparation of our delicious lunches. The citizens of Our Town would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyal service and wish you many more happy years as head of our cafe- teria staff. Led by Sponsor Mr. Kroonen, the A.F.S. has put on many outstanding events through- out the school year. The benefits are used to send students abroad, as the club did Karen Plank last sum- mer, and Mike Zavala this year. There are also frontiers for the future students who will be involved in the stu- dents abroad program in the future. 54 Belgium Mike Zavala Raul Salazar | STUDENTS Udon Kumjing, who is from Thailand, is our second exchange student. Udon went to a high school called Pitsanoloke Pitayakom in Thailand. He attended 9th to 11th grades at this school, where he graduated last July before coming to Banning. Udon hopes someday to become a doctor or a teacher. He is an active member of A.F.S., Math Club, and Student Council. Udon Kumjing is staying at the home of Mrs. Genevieve Rutherford and family. Raul Salazar, our exchange stu- dent from Cali, Colombia. Raul has had six years of high school at Santa Librada High School in Colombia before coming to Banning. He is very active this year as a member of three important Bronco organizations, A.F.S., Math Club, and Student Council. Raul Salazar, who hopes to be- come a chemical engineer, is stay- ing at the home of the Howard Thompsons. EXCHANGE Udon Kumjing AUDIO VISUAL — When there are movies to seen and programs to be pre- f sented, the boys in the Audio- Visual class are the hidden ne- cessities. The boys take care of all film shown; they set up all ptograms and assemblies, along with learning about the projector and its various parts. The Bronc defense glistened in all five non-league games and the offense started rolling in the Beaumont game when senior quarter- back, Mike Wolfington threw three touchdown passes. The 1964 edition of the Banning Broncos appeared ready for the D.V.L. season to open. John Mercado Quarterback COACHELLA GAME The Broncos, D.V.L. champs, opened the season against the big, fast, and aggressive Coachella Arabs. Banning jumped off to a 7-0 lead in the first half against the favored Arabs when quarter- back Mike Wolfington hit Taft Abras on a ten yard tackle eligible play. The extra point was almost a disaster, but David Noble, after bobbling a look-in, hung on to give the Broncos their half time lead. Coachella came back rough in the third quarter, and evened things up at 7-7. The final quarter was a hard, tough twelve min- utes, but neither team could win. Dicky Brown Fullback Sam Thomas Halfback PALM SPRINGS GAME It was a warm, humid night in Palm Springs and the Banning Boys got their first view of the Palm Springs women. The Bron- cos, all decked out in their white shirts and ties, spent the first twenty minutes of the game try- ing to figure out where the goal posts were. When they finally realized they were concentrating on the wrong goals, they discov- ered the score was 28-6. Don Lyons Randy Thompson David Noble Lee Brower Brian Romberg Center Flanker End End Guard INDIO GAME The Bronco-Indio game was probably the most exciting game of the year. The Bron- cos had a large hurdle to over- come after losing the previous week. The first half was a tough nosed football exhibi- tion and the Broncos held a 12-7 lead at halftime. In the third quarter the Broncos pushed the Rajas’ deep into their own territory. Brian Romberg blocked a punt and the Mighty Broncos scored again. Indio threw a long T.D. pass late in the third quarter and with seven seconds left disaster struck—the Rajahs had won 19-18. 74 Lee Dwan Larry Harvey Flanker Linebacker YUCAIPA GAME Homecoming night at Ban- ning got started with a bang. The Broncos had all their spirit for this game and after a brilliant warm-up exhibition the varsity smashed everything in their way and went into the second half leading 20-0. The team spent most of the second half dreaming about the dance to come, but before it was too late realized that the T-Birds were sneaking up on them. The Broncs managed to hang on and won, 26-20. TWENTY-NINE PALMS GAME The Broncos really displayed their skill in this game. We were favored to win and there was a lot of anxiety in the Bronco rooting section. The score was tied 6-6 in the. first half. The team really showed how good they could be in the second half. We scored 3 touchdowns while holding the Wildcats scoreless and won the game, 25-6. £2. In what was perhaps the larg- est free and peaceful demonstra- tion in world history, nearly a million people converged on Washington D.C. in late sum- mer of 1963. Calling for racial equality, these people expressed a rising sentiment within nearly all Americans — immediate ac- tion on the important question of civil rights. World TRAGIC MOMENT: _ the death of a president. Shortly after noon on Nov. 22, three shots rang out in downtown Dallas. Slumping for- ward, fatally wounded John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, is shielded by his wife, Jacqueline. All Americans shared the tragic horror and conscience striken grief for that man shot down in a Texas town in 1963. Outside VIET NAM: war is not easy, or a one time thing. The school year ’63-'64 saw American troops still fighting as “military advisors” in South Viet Nam. Through a wet win- ter and two coup d’etats, Amer- icans and Vietnamese continued to fight, kill, and be killed by a Communist enemy they could not hear or see, for a cause that was often equally illusive. This page is dedicated to the memory of our late president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who was assassinated on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Shocked and disbelieving, students sat dumbfounded in their classes after hearing the news delivered to them by a special bulletin 4th period. During the following three days, students and faculty were kept constantly informed of the assassination and the events that followed by the extensive television news broadcasts, With the whole world, Banning High School mourned the passing of a great world leader. 107 b Shaved heads, Beatle cuts, cardigan — sweaters over white shirts, ivy-league ) . slacks, madras belts and saddle oxfords Se ey anes w were donned by the boy who was ei in” in 64. 9 Wold Ovr parte © Yoor Hand? RAMSEY BANNING, CALIFORNIA BURNHAM’S CHEVRON SERVICE 255 E. RAMSEY BANNING, CALIFORNIA TILL NEXT YEAR First and foremost, thanks must go to Mr. McCulloh, who, without complaint, printed our last minute photos. Also we take our hats off to Mr. Lane for print- ing a set of beautiful Senior class pictures. Special thanks to our “humble” advisor Mr. Mike Rose for putting up with our gripes and complaints when the going got rough (which was quite often). I would like to acknowledge the use of Mrs. Starmer’s little airplane for providing the required height to get the picture for the title page. I really must thank the people who carry “the big stick” in “Our Town,” the teachers, for allowing the staff extra periods to finish important work. Huge stacks of thanks is in order to the staff for all their hard work; to Car- ol, our Production Editor, for her unique treatment of the Student Council, Stam- pede, and the San Gorgonian Staff; to Terri for wading through the piles of UPI pictures and coming up with an extra special “News” section. To Vickie for identifying zillions of class pictures; to Rich for taking over the sports section in the ab- sence of Curt and Steve. To “Wolf” for great coverage in the activities and organization sections; to Janet and Judy and Barbara for handling sales and distribution; to Linda for doing justice to the Faculty section; to Sharon Pam who put their work into most every section of the book; to Judy for spending countless hours over the Senior sections; to Suzy for covering the town with the ad campaign; and finally to Warren for this year’s great cover and art work.
