IT IS PRECISELY BECAUSE WE IN GENERAL MOTORS ARE VERY MUCH AWARE OF THE VALUE OF PEOPLE AS INDIVIDUALS THAT WE RECOGNIZE THE IM- PORTANCE OF EDUCATION-- BOTH TO US AND TO THE COUNTRY. EDU- CATION, TO THE EXTENT THAT IT IS DOING ITS JOB PROPERLY, PROMOTES INDIVIDUALITY, NOT CONFORMITY. ... John F. Gordon President General Motors Now, with the benediction of the brain‘and business- man, both the need for, and the philosophy) necessary to the survival and growth of the democratic ideals have been clearly delineated. Hereengaged in this cold-war combat for the minds of men, we, inour little splinter society, are staging our search for those elusive freedom fundamentals by emphasizing the vital difference in individuals. als aN ¢ Alphabet For Joe Smith This primer for Joe Smith, then, is a re-ori- entation course for the individual who, like the cigar-store Sachem, is a vanishing Ameri- can unless we can demonstrate that we have an educational environment which furnishes the best frame of reference for creative imagi- ation and critical thought; most important areas to develop i norder to prove our superi- ority in the Sputnik struggle. The integrity of the individual is the factor necessary to democracy's survival in the nu- clear age. The basic learning skill is the development of the creative imagination as the individual's freedom factor. ‘Codeword: Individual Great A, little a, bouncing b... A IS FOR ALMA MATER, AND THE ATTITUDES INSTILLED THEREIN... From algebra to zoology, fromsoup tonouns, the way the ball bounces in the halls of learning is of major concern to the inhabitants of Banning Union High School. From the extreme of the ten o'clock scholar to the foreign-born Congressman , we see a slice of democracy in action... ; i i : 4 ST eS 1424 24 ke Pes” B IS FOR BRONCO... The same spirit of rugged individual - ism that places a premium on the per- son's skill and ability on the playing field, is synonymous with a teaching program which nurtures individual uniqueness in a design for living in a democracy. C IS FOR CURRICULUM AND CREATIVITY Creativity is the trademark of the individual. This identi- fication of those who will have the most tocontribute to the society as graduates is one that crops up consistently enough, in the classroom or the extra-curricular antics, to suggest that teenagers are not necessarily conformity-bound to create afuture with Orwellian overtones and push-button citizens. 951 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page | 12 22 a2 78 98 Introduction Administration Classes Activities Sports Advertising photography by Leonard McCulloh, McCulloh Studios block prints by Gary Burk George Rohrig Claire Mariedth Bob McConnell Lawrence Pendleton Betty Wall Orley Whitham CONNIE POYNTER-- Editor and alumnus D. Powell We want to express our appreciation not only tor his unselfish devotion to our welfare, his helpful guidance and instruction, but also for what he represents. He is understanding and fair and square in all his dealings. He embodies the principles he teaches. To top it all off, he has a grand sense of humor that makes it a pleasure to work with him. ----dedication, 1944 San Gorgonian To the best of our knowledge, a yearbook has never before been dedicated twice to the same person, but we break this precedent to add our recognition to the many others, of Earle B. Powell's 30-year career of service and leadership in education. 26 of those were in Banning as teacher, principal, and finally, superintendent of both the Elementary and High School districts of this city. During his tenure four school bonds were approved in an extensive program of rehabilitation and construction whichsaw a doubled expansion of class- room and campus areas. A new Junior High School plant, now under construction, is the most recent in a long line of achievements to meet the community needs from which Mr. Powell can derive a great sense of pride and accomplishment. Sowe, too, concur withthe community, and Mrs. Walter J. Lauck,P.T.A. President, who, in a ceremony at the culmination of his Banning career, said: The person selected for this very special honor tonight has served well the young people of Banning over a long period of time, and in many different capacities. ---Surely this person's record of tireless and effective service to the youth of our community, warrants that this Honorary Life Member- ship in the California Parent-Teacher Association be awarded to Mr. Earle B. Powell. 21 SENIORS Seniors SECOND SEMESTER OFFICERS, TOP ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Gueorev, Treasurer; M. Roberts, J. Myers, C. Wolcott, D Butcher, Cheerleaders; D. Dysart, President ; M.
