W. Irving Crowley 1897-1959 “No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the con- tinent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were. Any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind So are we all diminished, family, friends, colleagues, students; all made less by the death of W. Irving Crowley. And yet his legacy is not written on the wind . . . 1897-1959 . . . Not the alloted three score and ten, yet in terms of individual worth and achievement, a life more full and farther reaching than most of us are granted. Who’s Who in American Education lists extensively his achievements, his accomplishments in a 40 year long teaching career. His degrees and his widely varied experience as instructor in languages at the col- lege level were the earmarks of the scholar; his authorship of numerous language publications and texts (some of which were the only ones used in military training schools) was an index of the talent he brought to his profession. To say that he was head of the Foreign Language De- partment at Lincoln Memorial University, that he authored the first Turkish language text used by the Armed Forces in World War 2, is not a full measure of the man, however. As a teacher he expected much; as a scholar he gave more, to meet the challenge of the times. The scholar leavened his erudition with a sense of humor and in- cisive wit that earned the respect of his colleagues and students alike. Although his Naval service ended in 1918, he never became a non- combatant. W. Irving Crowley was involved in mankind, and through his profession, more actively a participant in the most vital sense. In this cold-war combat for the minds of men, he was truly a part of the main, a significant part of the main endeavour of our time. 22
