The new six classroom building seen from the east end of the walk-way. BUT BEHIND THE SERENE FALL FACADE of the Administration building are their indelible imprint, the great changes in the exterior and interior landscapes, new buildings, new vistas, new policies reflecting the âsputnik spirit of the times. a new landscape on CAMPUS 4 The cafeteria building, looking northwest from the parking lot. Viewed from the west, the new classrooms, and the cafeteria at the east end of the walkway. At the east end of the Administration building, stands the new home of Music. Looking north toward the Athletic field, along the covered walk in front of the cafeteria. From Social Science, to skull sessions at half-time, the instructors work to develop the creative imagination and skills exemplified by the new horizons on campus. theLANDSCAPEw .. In the beginning was the image, then came the word. It's a big job, re-modeling this interior landscape, from picture books to a philosophy of freedom compatible with the democratic ideal. The surface topography is charted, itâs the inner terrain must give us pause . . . â . â 'â Xt A never-changing thing; this, too. is port of the scenery. familiar LANDMARKS. . in the new landscape. The new look, but still the same old face. The traditional trappings are part and parcel of the terrain to be covered in the four years at Banning Union High. The co-ordinates wouldn't be complete without them. The first glimpse of those future vistas comes through these doors. The shape of victories. The old sycomores' leafy pattern contrasts vividly with the dean, contemporary line of the new Music building. The new principal, Mr. Stevens, unpacking new volumes revealing the re-orientation toward an old standby in the curriculum. Both these landmarks fit into The new landscape. Mr. Quinn (Elmer) long-time custodian, and the gym. Principal Deweese Stevens, Superintendent E. B. Powell, and student Carol Nelson welcome his honor. Mayor John Raotz, heading a group of visiting citizens. Lighting technicians and sound-effects men, Chuck Reed and Steve Wages, exhibit a serious mien while awaiting their cues. ofCONTINENT Bruce Maier and Sandy Edmundson chart a pleasant course around the dance floor. The old familiar landscape contains the contours of the future, too; the rugged aspect, the high plateaus, the individual prominences . . . rough terrain and smooth going too. Perhaps the student council member is the future lady mayor; the Senior play stage-hands, tomor- rowâs T.V. technicians; and to-dayâs Home-coming Queen is a prospective Miss America. Mapping this territory is an old challenge to be met by the new explorers. Rosie Zavala exploring the creative construction. The main purpose in exploring these new landscapes finally arrives; the graduating seniors open that last door into the ââbrave new worldâ to survey the boundaries. 13 ADMINISTRATION The new look on campus reflects the forward looking philosophy of a hard-working, dedicated group of pub- lic servants, our school board. From fixing lockers to help- ing us with extra curricular activities, our custodians' helpfulness is respected and appreciated. L fo R.: B. Garner, H. Wayhem, R. Minkle Mr. Wunch W. Irving Crowley 1897-1959 âNo man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the con- tinent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were. Any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind So are we all diminished, family, friends, colleagues, students; all made less by the death of W. Irving Crowley. And yet his legacy is not written on the wind . . . 1897-1959 . . . Not the alloted three score and ten, yet in terms of individual worth and achievement, a life more full and farther reaching than most of us are granted. Whoâs Who in American Education lists extensively his achievements, his accomplishments in a 40 year long teaching career. His degrees and his widely varied experience as instructor in languages at the col- lege level were the earmarks of the scholar; his authorship of numerous language publications and texts (some of which were the only ones used in military training schools) was an index of the talent he brought to his profession. To say that he was head of the Foreign Language De- partment at Lincoln Memorial University, that he authored the first Turkish language text used by the Armed Forces in World War 2, is not a full measure of the man, however. As a teacher he expected much; as a scholar he gave more, to meet the challenge of the times. The scholar leavened his erudition with a sense of humor and in- cisive wit that earned the respect of his colleagues and students alike. Although his Naval service ended in 1918, he never became a non- combatant. W. Irving Crowley was involved in mankind, and through his profession, more actively a participant in the most vital sense. In this cold-war combat for the minds of men, he was truly a part of the main, a significant part of the main endeavour of our time. 22 SENIORS Back row: C. Jo tâV. Pres., T. PelonisâPnt.. D. A single gesture or a whole dance may evolve from an idea, an atti- tude, an event, a sound, or a combina- tion of these. It is individualistic ... a conscious and purposeful means of ex- pression through rhythmical movement of the human body. VARSITY FOOTBALL Our Bronco Football program is designed to fulfill a num- ber of needs of the high school students. First it includes more students than any other sport, it promotes the spirit of team co-operation, competition, and the need for physical exertion. Most important is the need for contact sports as an outlet for the excessive energies stored up in high school boys.
