Exercising patience, and fairness in her teaching to bring the best possible outcome for her students. Mrs. Lilah Blackwood, this we dedicate, the 1987 CONTRAILS 2 The theme for the 1987 edition of The Contrails is “Soaring to New Heights. This theme was chosen because of the many changes Banks has undergone. 6 During the past few years, Banks has expanded in numerous ways. The three block school that was built in 1957 is now an Alternative High School. With the school being a liberal arts international studies program, Banks has become one of the top three schools in Birmingham. And along with new programs have come new faces to Banks High School. Although many things have changed at Banks, the spirit and the great tradition can never be taken away from this great school. The tradition of Banks is rich, and for Banks just ving 30 years to treasure, is even more narkable. Everything from academics to athletics, nks will always be rich in all lits studies offered to outgoing students. We will always love the rich tradition interwoven in � t three decades at this school. As Banks lebrates its thirtieth year, it also enters a new era d truly is soaring to new heights. Tracey Warren Mand} Caldwe Michelle Kinard Joyce Howar KEMKE5ENTATIVES HOMECOMING WEEK Hats of all 9izes and shapes donned the heads of Banks' students and faculty on Wednesday of Homecoming Week. On Thursday another treat was in store in the auditorium as we watched in awe the presentation of the Homecoming Court. What lovely ladies and handsome gentlemen we have. Many session rooms were decorated for this grand occasion. Friday was packed with various activities as we fashioned in our school colors, red and blue. A “pep rally of all pep rallies” was held in the gym. The Booster Club so graciously served us popcorn in order to remind the football team that they were going to “Pop the Colonels! SEPTEMBER ZZ Friday afternoon a parade in all its grandeur passed in front of our Alma Mater creating more excitement. Friday night finally arrived. Elise Olive, Flomecoming Queen of 1985, crowned our new queen, the lovely Jill Washington. The determined mighty Jets popped the Woodlawn Colonels 6-0. After the game, the week culminated with a dance in the gymnasium. How proud we are to be Banks Jets! They started f the year as camp champions at a niversal Cheerleading Association camp the University of Alabama. They won -ery category in which they participated. During August the Banks Varsity leerleaders taught a clinic of 112 girls am Huffman ball park. They also won the jntury Plaza Spirit Day competition. Then ey went on to a competition at the illeria and placed second. After all of the competitions were over e cheerleaders took a short break and en started practicing for the Regional impetition. It started off with a first place trophy in the J.V. division at a U.C.A. clinic at the University of Alabama in June. After a short vacation they helped with a clinic for Huffman Park cheerleaders and taught a clinic for South Roebuck Park cheerleaders. To get the basketball players fired up, B-Team decorated their lockers. The year '86 ended with a second place in the J.V. division at U.C.A. regional competition in December at U.A.B. For the second year in a row. 8ank$ started off with a new head coach, the thud head coach in four years A new coaching staff and football system, not to men tion one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A with nine of their ten opponents making the State Playoffs. 8eing one of the smallest teams on Class 5A. the Jets knew they were in for a tough season. Although plagued with injuries through most of the year, the Jets kept up their high spmts and continued to show pride and class every time they stepped on the field. Banks finished the season with a disappointing record of 3-7-0. but with the respect of many people and opposing teams Holt Banks goes into Holt a one point favorite The Jets out-totaled the Ironmen 210 yards offense to 116 yards. Banks was led by Isaac Mendenhall with 119 yards rushing on 16 carries and 1 touchdown Holt scored with 8:17 left to play and faked the extra point tor a two point conversion which gave them the lead and the game. Ensley The second game of the season matched up Banks and Ensley. Banks, a seven point favorite, led 18 0 at halttime, Isaac Mendenhall had two touchdown runs of two and three yards. Willie Pledger had an eleven yard tumble recovery and returned it for a touchdown The Jet offense |ust couldn't get going in the second half, as Ensley picked away at the lead With ten seconds left and an 18-13 point lead. Banks was forced to punt The Big Play. once again, resulted in Banks second loss, as Ensley returned the punt 54 yards for the final score of the game 21-18 Huffman Banks goes into the third game of the season a live pomt tavonte against their Arch Rivals, the Huffman Vikings. Both teams looking for their first win and bragging rights for the year (Banks leads the series 12 wins to Huffman's 4.) Jones Valley It's Oct. 31. Halloween night, the Jets are bound for Fair Park Arena, to play the Brownies (Jones Valley). Banks, a 7 point favorite, fell behind in the 2nd quarter 6-0. The Jets score was set up by Charles Taylor, who deflected a pass, and Mike Strickland who intercepted it and returned it to the Brownie 5 yard line. Mendenhall, who rushed for 74 yards, scored the only Jet V i touchdown as he went in from the one. Salter’s kick with 15 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, was all Banks needed, as they won the game, spoiling the Brownie Homecoming. 7-6.
