IT- CONTRAILS 1986 Volume 29 Banks High School Birmingham, Alabama Editor: Sharon Burgin Assistant Bridget Advisor: Lilah Dedication 2 Opening section Seniors Student Government 33 Underclassmen 37 Faculty 57 Honors Student Life Clubs Athletics Closing section Advertisements 63 69 105 115 131 137 1 In the short time he has been at Banks, this enthusiastic teacher, affectionately dubbed “The Mad Scientist,’’ has managed to capture the interest and hearts of his science students by injecting his own brand of teaching and sharp wit into everyday classroom situations. His unfailing sense of humor and his concern for the welfare of his students have made him a friend of many. We dedicate this, the 1986 CONTRAILS, to Mr. Michael MacMahon. Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! — For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow Find us rather than today. 6 Art is long, and Time is fleeting. And our hearts, though stout and brave. Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world s broad field of battle. In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act. — act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. AND MISS BANKS 1986 1 V i Footprints in the sands of time is our theme this year. The sand represents the days of our lives that filter slowly like sand through an hourglass and the footprints repre- sent the impressions that we leave behind. Thus, may we look back and fondly remember the first days of meeting and greeting new and old friends, to the hectic but glorious days of ending yet another school year. 70 Banks High School was not forgotten over the summer. For the first time, due to unfortunate circumstances. the students were reunited at the school to receive their yearbooks and have an autograph party. Excitement soared to an all-time high throughout the afternoon. 71 HOMECOMING 1985 During the week of Oct. 21-25, the students and faculty of Banks had a variety of things to do. Homecoming Court was presented. students prepared themselves for the homecoming parade and pep rally, and session rooms were decorated. Overall, there existed a feeling of excitement throughout the air. As the game night approached, the mighty Jets prepared themselves for the victory of 28-0 over Hayes. 72 Carla Scott escorted by Wade Brown Angela Cover son escorted by Shawn Holificld Br.dgetle Moore escorted by Lee Armstrong Representatives 73 Kristi O Kelley escorted by Steve Smith Forsetta McCord escorted by Abraham Cherry Mondy Caldwell escorted by Jay Estes Rosalyn Rowser escorted by Darrell Cole Bridget Holifield escorted by Timothy McCurdy 74 Representatives Becky Hanvey escorted by Mike McClinton Joyce Marie Howard escorted by Ricky Gross Jackie Jordan escorted by Shepard Skanes Representatives Lisa Knighton escorted by Ron Hawkins ELISE OLIVE MISS COMTRAILS 1986 Emcee — Ed Cleveland Sherry Anderson Lorraine Bayless Mandy Caldwell Sherry Hardy , Kelly Ham Lovle Hill CONTESTANTS 77 Bridget Holifield 78 CONTESTANTS 79 TALENT FIVE FINALISTS AND . . . To the members of the Contrails Staff, we appreciate your time and effort in producing this yearbook. In looking back over this year, we remember those special moments: pep rallies, homecoming, sporting activities, and the hustle and bustle of school life. We laughed, sang, cheered, and cried together. We’ve all grown to cherish those special moments. Our minds and hearts shall never let us forget the memories: our footprints in the sands of time.
