i( r A p I ALMA MATER Nestled in Red Mountain ' s bgsom, Cradled by the Truth, Proudly reigns our Alma Mater O ' er the spirit of youth; May we begin down in the valley And climb up to the crest, Bearing our banners of blue and scarlet For Banks we ' ll seek the quest! 1 r 1 CONTRAILS 1984 B Volume 27 Banks High School Birmingham, Alabama Co-Editors: Cathrine Byars Angelia Niles Advisor: Irene Hendricks n . ' ' ' Jwerthe 1984 CONTRAILS staff, dedicate our yearbook to one of the best friends the annua! has ever had. To this dear friend we say thank you for all the support you have given Banks throughout the twenty-four years you have been here. Your support of all student activities and your loyalty to Banks have never been surpassed. Thank you, Mrs. Bess Holbrook. r ' ; TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION 2 OPENING SECTION 4 SENIORS 17 UNDERCLASSMEN 38 FACULTY 57 HONORS 63 STUDENT LIFE 11 CLUBS 109 SPORTS 119 ADS 135 CLOSING SECTION 161 We have chosen for the theme of the 1984 yearbook Contrails. Why? Simply because Contrails describes exactly what the year- book represents. A contrail is the exhaust — seen in the form of a white cloudy trail — of a jet. Since Banks High is the home of the Fighting Jets, to review its past is to look at its contrail. Look at this year at Banks, its good times, its fun, its trials and hardships. All of these are left behind. Just as the contrail of a jet represents where it has been and where it is going, so does the 1984 CONTRAILS show where the seniors of 1984 have been and where the underclassmen have yet to go. page 4: upper right, Gary Cooper, Curtis Bailey; center, Brian Bates; lower right, Michelle Palmer, Wilda Wiggins. page 5: upper left (l-r) Tracy Tenhet, Todd Carroll, Wayne Ledbetter, Danny Stroup, David Williams; lower right, Dennis Graves, Tim Fulmer. kH; What do you know about Banks High School? Delegates are selected by the faculty in the spring of their junior year. The choices are based on grades, character, leadership, and a desire to serve the school. Basically, the program is a mock-up of state government and is geared to a better understanding of government. Delegates learn the election process within the state and actually elect, from among their number, a governor, a It. governor, and other state officers. There are some differences in the ac- tivities for boys and girls, but on the whole the programs are similar. The students toured the state capitol building and met with the governor. They listened to lectures about the elec- tion process, state government, and the operation of a legislature. Breaks from the monotonous schedules were provided. There were sock hops, dances, and i mpromptu par- ties in the dorm. In addition to Girls ' State and Boys ' State, there are Girls ' Nation and Boys ' Nation. Those students elected to the offices of governor and it governor are the delegates from Alabama to the na- tional activities. Boys ' State is sponsored by the American Legion, and a local Post pays for two boys from Banks to attend. Girls ' State, on the other hand, is spon- sored by the American Legion Auxiliary, and they only pay for one girl to attend. Girls ' State Kelly Sewell Boys ' State George Wiggs — Bobby Stewart Key Award The Key Award is awarded to the hardest working member of the Student Council. Student council members vote to determine the winner. This year ' s recipient of the Key Award is George Wiggs, President of the Student Body. 84 Award The 84 Award is awarded to the runner-up of the Key award. The win ner must display the same drive anc motivation that the winner of the Ke- Award demonstrates. This year ' s ' 8 Award winner is Cyndy Schatz, Girl ' Vice-President of the Student Body. v lodn hiiiakiT ( viul Sc M (jeorge VViggs. Tim fulmer. It also includes classroom activities. Many activities related to the lessons being taught are used to enhance the students ' desire to learn. In home-ec students learn to cook the foods they are being taught about. In chemistry class, under the supervision of their teacher, the students experiment with different instruments, while in drama class the students learn the dif- ferent aspects of acting and of stage production. In BOE class the students learn to type, take shorthand, and do clerical work, while in com- puter studies class the students learn the skills needed to use computers. Student life is, however, a great deal more than classroom activities, although these other activities benefit the student, too. Student life is the pep rallies, the football games, Homecoming, the basketball games, the choosing of favorites, and all the other activities the student body par- ticipates in. Though haunted by the fact that the Jets were smaller than other teams — in both number and size - they managed a 5-5 season. The Jets just weren ' t together at the opening of the season against the Parker Thundering Herd, but they came out fighting against the Walker County Vikings the next week. The Jets beat the Vikings after losing to them last year. The Jets, now with a 1-1 record, then played the Erwin Eagles. The Jets ' score was set up by Wayne Gann who in- tercepted a pass on the 35. Benny Grissom and Wayne Gann then worked together. With a 16 yard pass from Grissom to Gann, the ball moved to the 17 yard line. On the next play, Benny scampered 17 yards for the touchdown. The Jets fought hard but couldn ' t fly past the Eagles. The Jets opened their region com- petition with great style and class as they romped on the Phillips Red Raiders for a 48-6 victory. Roderick Rutledge, Banks ' starting tailback, scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards. Rutledge also made a fantastic 27 yard run for a Jet TD. Also, Alvin Burnett scored with a 32 yard fum- ble recovery. 124 THE SEASON Continued The Jets, after their win over Phillips, were more than ready to tackle the Ensley Yellow Jackets. Although the Jets trailed 6-0 in the first half, they came back fighting hard in the second half. Matthew Smith put the Jets in scoring position in the third quarter after in- tercepting the ball on the Ensley 6 yard line. Two plays later, Jeff Herrod scored on a 4 yard run. Later John Brasher scored with a 36 yard pass from Benny Crissom. The final score was Banks 22- Ensley 6. The following week the Jets were in high gear for the battle against the Vestavia Rebels. The game ' s momen- tum hinged on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Benny Grissom to Tony Ed- wards on a faultless fake field goal early in the fourth quarter. Jeff Herrod scored the winning touchdown, which made the score Jets 13-Rebels 7. After losing to the Woodlawn Col- onels, the Jets moved on to play the Carver Rams, Although they were not able to move to victory, the Jets ' tremendous defensive line held the Rams to only 19 yards the second half. The Jets then beat the Hayes Paceset- ters, but lost to the Huffman Vikings - leaving the season overall 5-5. STARRING four of this year ' s outstanding seniors — Benny Crissom, Wayne Gann, Roderick Rutledge, and Jeff Herrod. Benny Ham Crissom, the Jets ' star- ting quarterbacl , showed that he could really move the ball against Vestavia with a 52 yard bootleg keeper. He also exhibited his great running ability against Phillips with an overwhelming 82 yard touchdown. Benny says that, besides football, he enjoys spending time with Nancy. Wayne Roadrunner Gann has this special knack for making unexpected in- terceptions. He proved that against Er- win and Vestavia. Wayne wants to join the Marines after high school and later on he may become a police officer. He said that he enjoys working out, as well as partying. Roderick Rutledge is a tremendous runner. He rushed for 1 16 yards with 3 touchdowns against Hayes. Rod said that playing together made the team- mates closer and he enjoyed being close friends. Oftentimes, Roderick spends time alone listening to the radio. Jeff Herrod has great scoring abilities. He can often bull his way through players for 4-7 yard touchdowns. He did this against Ensley, Huffman, and Carver. Jeff says that he likes to trip out and have fun with his teammates. He plans to go to Jacksonville State and may go on to play pro football. f 128 VARSITY BASKETBALL 1984 First Row: Eric Burnett, Virgil Cray, Kenneth Hough, )ames Baskerville, Max Locl hart. This year they surprised not only Banks, but their rivals as well. Coach David Childers is the proud coach of this team. Compared to last year ' s team and other teams before this one, this team is dynamite! The players are filled with potential, potential that most teams dream of. The main contributors to this explosive team are the five seniors — James Eric Baskervilie, Virgil Gray, Ken- neth Hough, Max Lockhart, and Lewis Showers. But they are not the only ones that contribute. The rest of the team has helped put Banks ' basketball on top. This year our team has proved that football players are not the only athletes that come from Banks. The team is led by Coach Sanders and by seniors John Brasher, Bobby Stewart, Wayne Gann, and junior Rodney Ferguson, ail of whom have baseball backgrounds. We ' ve made new friends and become even faster friends with the old. We ' ve attended the pep rallies, cheered our teams on, laughed at our vic- tories, and cried at our defeats. As seniors, the four years, particularly the last, have groomed us for adulthood. After many years of being dependent, we will finally be independent and will strive to make it on our own. We are adults. The world is ours. Page 162 - Far left: Tracie Wiggs. Bot- tom left: Jerome Stevenson. Bottom Center: Stephanie Willis. Bottom right: Shawn Ireland. 163 So this is our contrail. This year has come and gone — its good times, its bad times, its fun, its dif- ficulties. We are all a year older and perhaps a bit wiser. We seniors are ready to leave and the underclassmen will all be moving up. Good luck! Top left: Mandy Caldwell. Top center: Biniam Asghedom. Center: Dennis Graves. Right: Dana Norton. Lots of time and effort was put forth by the staff and tons of patience shown on the part of our sponsor Mrs. Hendricks. This year ' s staff was relatively new, but they still came through with flying colors. For this we thank them. Their dedication has been well rewarded in the out- come of this year ' s annual. It is by far the best ever published. Without them and our ever encouraging sponsor, Mrs. Hendricks, we would not have been able to capture the year ' s memories of Banks High. We will treasure always the memories held in this yearbook and hope that you will too. God Bless! 165 Abrams. Kim 20. 113 Acker. Tracy 44, 113, 116 Adkins, Shane 50 Alexander. Robert 50. 99 Allison.
