For one trimester the stu- dents attend Davis School, which serves as a base for their research on the topic of their choice. The students also do 30 hours of some type volunteer work. At the end of the trimester, each student must present a pro- ject or report which represents their research. Mark Archibald, Connie Funderburg, Steve Jones, Valerie Proctor, Denise Batson, Donna Graham, Glenn Cannon and several others participated in this year ' s program. Hayes scored late in the first quarter. Then, midway in the second period, Press Hargrove scored from the Hayes four. With the score 7-7, regulation play ended, throwing the game into overtime. ' Banks was the loser by one point. With determined running by Greg Bell, and some good defensive play, Banks found itself back on the winning track . Banks scores came with a Tony Langer score from the three, a Bell pass reception of four yards, and two good defen- sive plays - one, a fumble recovery by Dyrle Burkett, and the second, an 80 yard interception by Mike Sparks. CARVER RAMSAY Banks took the opening kick-off and two plays later was ahead 6-0 via Greg Bell ' s fifty yard jaunt. Jerry Davis added his first of five PATS. Two more scores came before an exciting 63-yard run by Johnny Lott with 58 seconds left in the half. The last Jet score came with 8:30 remaining in the 3rd quarter from a 2-yard run by Greg Bell. Bell had 102 yards on 16 carries. The thing that makes this win so great is the team we beat, commented Coach Dyer Carlisle. The first score came on a 12-yard pass reception and a 68-yard run by Mike Vaughn. Two more scores followed before the first half ended, giving Banks a 20-0 lead. But, in the second half it was a differ- ent story, with West End scoring 20 points. It was by Jerry Davis ' skillful 22-yard field goal that Banks came out on top. wl ; - ' VBt |. w % KV Ijs B M - ■Jmn Ht h If I M - Bfcv r v (1 WEST END MOUNTAIN BROOK The Jets presented fine opposition against defending state champs, the Mountain Brook Spartans. The first score of the game came on a 1-yard run made by Jay West. Mountain Brook bounced right back with a 20-yard Billy Morris score. Each team scored another TD before regu- lation play ended. Then, in overtime, Mountain Brook went on to win by a TD margin. Although Banks lost by a point, it can honestly be said that Banks gave Mountain Brook the hardest game that they had all year. Although the scoreboard favored Berry, the Jets won the statistical fight. The Jets opened up scor- ing with Jay West running the ball in. Berry then scored a 23-yard field goal and then went on to score a touchdown. Then in the fourth quarter, Banks came back with a score by Art Walker but Berry also scored a touchdown. Final score, Berry 17 Banks 13. BERRY SHADES VALLEY Some fantastic passing was the key factor for the Jets against Shades Valley. Of course, one cannot overlook the person catch- ing these passes. Press Har- grove to Make Vaughn was the story again. Banks scor- ing touchdowns of 13, 27 and 39 yards was enough to outdo the 14 points scored by Valley. Ensley played a determined first half against Banks scoring 14 points. But at the end of the first half, a Presley Hargrove to Make Vaughn pass started Banks ' scoring. In the second half, Banks came on with more scoring, winning the game 19-14. ENSLEY WOODLAWN The Woodlawn Colonels upset Banks homecoming 14-7. Woodlawn started the scoring on the opening kickoff with an 87 yard runback. Banks only score came on a 17 yard run by Art Walker. Banks scoring started off when Scotty Roberson ran a fumble in for 45 yards. Then Pres Hargrove passed to Mike Vaughn for another touchdown. Due to Banks defense, Huffman was held to only 7 points. Greg Bell rushed for 111 yards in this game. HUFFMAN IHHHI BOTTOM ROW: Billy Blackman. Dee Murchison. Jimbo Mauldin. Mike Shipley, Joel Grubbs. It may not sound so well to some, winning only half of your games, but with as large and tough a schedule as Banks had this was quite good. Of the more exciting games played, Huffman heads the list. Not once, but twice in regular season play Banks came from behind to beat the Vikings. In their first meeting with the help of Steve Overstreet ' s hitting (5 for 5) and David McNabb ' s hitting (3 for 4) Banks defeated the Vikings 6 to 5. David McNabb was also the winning pitcher. In their second meeting, Banks came back to win 5 to 4. After this game Huffmans Coach English said, There ' s just no beating the Jets; they ' ve got a hex on the Vikings. After regular season play ended Banks entered the city Tournament. They started out by beating Ensley and their old rival Huffman. Then West End got the best of the Jets. From there on it was down hill. Huffman finally got their revenge and knocked Banks out of the tournament. This year ' s team will have a new head coach. Dyer Carlisle. Coach Carlisle will have a good bunch of players to work with. The returning seniors are Randy Hearon, Steve Overstreet, Mike Walker, Pressley Hargrove, David McNabb, Tommy Street, Jerry Davis, and Bill King. Over A.E.A. the team will attend a baseball camp at Clearwater, Florida. Thursday after A.E.A. , March 24, they will open their season. 1976-77 WRESTLING ROW 1: Mark Armstrong. Jim Tuck. The Banks 1976-77 Wrestling Team was a young team plus it had a coach relatively new to the sport. Coach Rodgers showed great enthusiasm in this year ' s team. He attended a clinic to increase his knowledge of the sport and with the help of experi- enced seniors Dee Fuller and James Knowles, much improve- ment was made in the team. The season opened with Banks defeating Hewitt at Banks and Tuscaloosa County at Tusca- loosa. The team ' s best effort came at the Anniston match where Banks had to forfeit 18 points but was just edged out in the match by 2 points. Some of the wrestlers of this year ' s team placed high in tourna- ments around this area. They were: Dennis Vice - Third Erwin James Knowles - Third, City; Fourth, Minor, Sixth Erwin Pete Martin - Third, City: Third, Minor Coach Rodgers looks forward to better teams in the next few years, with the younger wrestlers gaining much experience from this season . The leading scorers have been Carmichael Gray and Randy Hearon. The leading rebounders have been Joe Lewis and Herman Bell. Other starters have been Jimmy Harrison, Montrice Gams, and Marvin Bates. Instead, Banks sponsors its swim team. The sponsors are Coach Williams and Mrs. Carter. The team practices at Jefferson State Junior College from 2:30-6:00 five days a week, along with other high schools in the eastern area. In years past, Banks has had good teams always placing well in the state. This year ' s team is small but still hopes for a place in the state. Tim O ' Kelley and John Odom are co-captains this year. Tim represented Banks in the Gulf States High School meet, a meet consisting of teams from all the southern states. The rest of the team will attend the state high school meet at Tuscaloosa in May. Since swimming is a year round sport, there is a chance to attend many meets. Along with high school meets, the swim team attends about 14 A.A.U. meets a year. The team has a chance to do a good deal of traveling also. Often there are meets in Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Decatur and Mobile. There are larger out of state meets. The team annually attends a meet in Florida at the end of each season. GOLF Banks ' Golf Team is coached by Coach McCary.
