As students of Banks High School and citizens of the world, , erything we do, say, think, id feel is a part of time. The wind rustles through the trees outside a window and an hour is gone a day, a week, a lifetime A wise old man blinked his eyes thoughtfully and said, Slow down; enjoy the days of youth for they are short. Β« r β’ r, ' , ti H MRS. MARY SHIELDS DEDICATION To a teacher who is quietly making her contribution to mankind by guiding, awakening, and inspiring the students at Banks High School and bringing them to the threshold of knowledge. Exercising fairness, patience, and kindness, she has proven herself as outstanding. To a most worthy and deserving part of life at Banks High School, Mrs. Mary Shields, we dedicate this, the 1974 CONTRAILS. Who would have thought the Banks Jets would have been state champs again? For the first time in the history of Banks High School, the Jets have been champions two years in a row. The 1 973 champions should be especially celebrated as they have worked and achieved an unblemished season of 1 3 wins and losses. The 1 973 Banks Jets first football game was a game of fumbles and interceptions despite the impressive score of 41-6 over Ramsay. Banks offense totaled 191 yards to Ramsay ' s 111. However, the defense came in to play setting up five out of six winning touchdowns. Defensive end Joe Shaw blocked a Ramsay punt on the fourth play of the game, and three plays later quarterback Jeff Rutledge scored from the four at the end of this twelve yard push. With the score at 14-6 halfway through the second quarter, the Rams were stopped short by the Jets on a fourth and two rushing call at the Ramsay 22. Two plays later, running back Milton Miles sped 1 7 yards for a touchdown. Defensive back Greg Muse intercepted a pass and ran it back 54 yards to the Ramsay one. Rutledge scored from there on the next play. Banks offensive drive was represented by Jerry Murphee, Bobby Morrow, and Jeff Rutledge. Early in the second quarter Rutledge hit Morrow with a pass good for 40 yards. Then fullback Jerry Murphree ran the remaining nine yards for the score. In this game Banks had five turnovers β four fumbles and a pass interception. In the words of Coach White, We can ' t do that against Berry next week. hi They didn ' t!!! Our champs remained solid, as they beat Berry with a score of 35-7. With 1 2,000 spectators looking on, it was Banks from the opening whistle to the final horn. The outcome was never in doubt. The Banks offense was nothing short of superb. The defense was the same, and the only score Berry could muster was an 1 1 -yard fumble return after the issue had already been decided. The Jets marched 60 yards in nine plays with Murphree going the final three for the first score. A pair of 1 6-yard carries by Milton Miles were the big ground gainers. Joe Shaw kicked the first of five extra points. Murphree went in again with 1 :23 left in the first quarter to climax a 67 yard drive. Milton Miles made the next touchdown from three yards out making it 21 -0 at the half. A 36-yard Rutledge to Bobby Morrow pass set up the next score as Murphree went in from the three. Gary White gave Banks its final score. He hit wide open Bob Martin who ran 42 yards for the score. The Banks Jets defeated Jackson ' s Mustangs 35-6 for step number 3 to the championship. A game of fumbles and mistakes left the Banks Jets with only 14 points in the first half. Murphree was a key runner with two touchdowns and 1 55 yards to his credit. M ' IrihfioiWB β Jeff Rutledge also led the offense by completing nine out of 1 7 passes for 1 46 yards. The Jet defense was superb β holding the Mustangs to just 1 8 yards rushing. The other scores came in the fourth quarter. Rutledge started the scoring, followed by Joe Wahl and Bob Martin. Banks was penalized 40 yards. This slowed the scoring machine down to a mere 35 points. Nevertheless, after a hard fought contest the Banks Jets came out of the game victorious. In spite of the referees the Banks Jets defeated the Mountain Brook Spartans by a score of 26-1 5. Milton Miles, Jerry Murphree, and Jeff Rutledge led the offense. Rutledge had the first touchdown on a 45-yard run in the first quarter. The Spartans came back with a 1 0-play drive tying the score. With 10:1 5 left in the half, Milton Miles squirmed through the Mountain Brook kicking team of a 63-yard run to put the Jets out front 1 4-7. Three minutes later, Jeff Rutledge connected a long bomb to Jerry Murphree for 70 yards and a touchdown. The final score for the Jets came with Miles running from scrimmage for 63 yards. The Jet defensive leaders were Carl Cams, Joe Shaw, Rick Neal, and Freddie Knighton. In the fifth game of the season the Jets beat the Yellow Jacket by a score of 7-6. Near the end of the first quarter the offense scored with a double pass play from Rutledge to Morrow split wide, then to Rick Neal for the score. The only other score was called back because of a holding penalty. The Ensley score came when a Jet lateral on the Banks 1 9 yard line was batted into the end zone. All of the Banks players and most of Ensley ' s seemed to think it was an incomplete pass. An Ensley defender fell on it in the end zone and the score counted. The margin of victory was defined at this point when Freddie Knighton broke through to block Ensley ' s extra point. The real heros of this game were the defenders. The Banks defense gave up only a net of 1 yards rushing the second half and 58 for the game. Joe Shaw, Danny Beck, Freddie Knighton, Frank Gunnels, Randy Duke, and Bob Grefseng were our defense superstars. Jeff Rutledge warmed up his passing arm to lead the Banks Jets to a 37-6 win over Jones Valley. In the second play of the second quarter Rutledge climaxed a five play, 55 yard drive with a one yard sneak. In the final minute of the half Jones Valley had moved to the Banks 1 1 . Bo Landers intercepted a pass on the five yard line and returned 95 yards to make the score 14-0 at half time. Following the second half kick-off Banks drove 64 yards in 1 1 plays. Murphree scored from the three. Later in the third quarter, Bob Martin took a 30 yard Rutledge pass in for the score. Other highlights came with a safety by Bob Grefseng and a 41 yard dash by Joe Wahl. To the delight of the Homecoming crowd, the Banks Jets defeated the Woodlawn Colonels 1 7-7 with one of the best team efforts this year. Our defense beat the unbeatable Tony Nathan, and offense gained 342 yards. Just four plays after the opening whistle Woodlawn led 7-0. This proved to be their only points of the game. For the Jets the first quarter was a hard struggle played with mistakes and fumbles. But Banks came back. In the second quarter, led by Jeff Rutledge, the Jets marched 67 yards for the score. Jerry Murphree rammed over from the three to climax the drive. Joe Shaw converted to tie the score at 7-7 . The second half was all Banks. Wahl ' s carries of 33 and 24 yards put the Jets at the Woodlawn five yard line in the third quarter. Shaw kicked the field goal making the score 1 0-7. The next drive for Banks consumed almost seven minutes, scoring with only 3:38 left on the clock. Murphree went in from the one on a fourth down play and Shaw ' s conversion made it 1 7-7 . During the second half our defense also shined. The Colonels could manage but 17 yards rushing. In the eighth game of the season, Banks defeated Phillips also by a score of 1 7-7. The Jets scored first midway through the second quarter by driving 46 yards in nine plays. The big play was a fourth and five pass play from the Raider 32-yard line. Rutledge hit Jerry Murphree for 29 yards and a first down on the Phillips three. Rutledge took it in from the two for the score, and with Shaw ' s conversion the score became 7-0. The second score came in the final minute of the second half. With time running out, Shaw was wide on a 31 -yard field goal attempt, but a five yard penalty against Phillips gave Shaw a second attempt. The 26-yard field goal was good making the score 10-0 at halftime. Phillips was not ready to call it quits. Phillips stopped two long drives one in the third quarter on the one-yard line and another early in the fourth quarter on the six-yard line. It was a Jeff Rutledge touchdown with five minutes left in the game that finally closed the contest. Moments later Phillips came back with the seven points, but it was too late to change the outcome. For the offense, Jeff Rutledge had a big night hitting eight out of fifteen passes for 1 40 yards and scoring two touchdowns personally. Joe Wahl led the Banks rushing attack with 81 yards in 1 2 carries. Rick Neal, Frank Gunnels, John Shaw and Bob Grefseng anchored the Jet defense that held Phillips to five first downs and 71 yards total offense. The Banks Jets clinched a playoff berth as they defeated the Huffman Vikings 24-7. A blending of offense and defense made it Bank ' s game almost from wire to wire. Most of the offensive action came from the running of Jerry Murphree who blasted for 1 16 yards in 24 carries. Jeff Rutledge threw, completed four out of seven passes for 61 yards and also carried the ball for 37 yards. Joe Wahl piled up 50 yards through holes blasted by offensive linemen Steve Umphrey, Robin Hunt, Steve Wright, Greg Ratcliff, Cliff Jones, and Bob Martin. The Banks Jets did most of their work offensively during the first half by building up a 1 7-7 lead. The second half belonged to Rick Neal who interrupted one pass when Huffman was driving, and blocked a punt to set the Jets up for their only points of the second half. M ii ' β¬ . Mr u 7 h , ' β . . J β β - - z f m β’ U- .-i ' Β£ The top defenders for Banks were Rick Neal, Bob Grefseng, Freddie Knighton, and Joe Shaw. They led the defense as it held Huffman to 29 yards rushing the first half and left them scoreless in the second half. With a fourth quarter explosion, Banks rolled to its first perfect season since 1 965, putting up 22 final points for a 35-1 Crippled Children ' s Classic win over the Homewood Patriots. The final score seems to imply that it was an easy game, but prior to the final minutes the Jets found the going rough against the Patriots. Homewood moved the ball rather easily in the first half to build up a 1 0-7 lead. But the second half was a different story. Banks had managed only 82 yards rushing and nine passing in the first half to 69 rushing and 72 passing for the Patriots. The Banks defense stood firm the second half, allowing Homewood only two first downs. The offense exploded piling up 1 92 second half rushing yards. After a scoreless first quarter, the Jets drove 73 yards in 1 3 plays climaxed by Jerry Murphree ' s one yard plunge. Homewood came back with a drive of its own for seven points. Moments later Banks fumbled and set up Homewood for 3 more points. The Jets were behind for the first time this year at the half. Banks ' first possession of the second half was stopped by an interception; but the second time the Jets got the ball, they scored. Murphree got the points from the one after carrying 33 yards to set it up. Early in the fourth quarter, Banks drove to the 10 but lost the ball on downs. Then the explosion came. Jerry McDonald returned a punt 38 yards to the seven and two plays later Wahl scored. Rutledge passed to Rick Neal for two with 4:14 remaining. Bo Landers then intercepted at his own 1 6 and seven plays later Murphree went in from the one, and Shaw kicked with 34 seconds left. David Simmons intercepted a pass following the touchdown and with two seconds left Rutledge scored from the 1 7. Joe Shaw ' s kick ended the scoring. A v ' β’ ft V -J ST? β Banks came out of the first round of the 4-A State Playoffs victorious with a score of 35-1 9 over Wenonah. With this victory came a loss, as the team lost one of the state ' s finest quarterbacks for the rest of the season. Jeff Rutledge suffered a broken left arm late in the second quarter. Despite losing their number one quarterback the offense came back with two more touchdowns in the second half. In the first half the Jets built up an advantage of 21-13. A fumble recovered by Joe Shaw on the Wenonah 1 5 yard line set up the first score for Banks. Murphree took it in from the 1 5 and Joe Shaw kicked the first of 5 extra points for the night. Wenonah came back on the next drive to tie the score. Banks grasped the lead again with a 71 yard drive ending with the score by Rutledge. On Bank ' s next possession, Murphree scored from the 5 β’ ending a 56 yard drive. Wenonah again came back with six more points making the half time score 21-13. In the second half Wenonah ' s offense was halted by a fired-up Jet defense. Most of the pressure on Wenonah was applied by tackles Freddy Knighton and John Shaw. This pressure was supported by Bob Martin, Frank Gunnels, Bo Landers, Jerry McDonald and Carl Cams. Wenonah ' s passing game was staggered by three interceptions. Rick Neal had two, and Jerry McDonald had one. The Jet scores in the second half were made by Jerry Murphree and Bobby Morrow. Following an interception, Jerry Murphree ran in from the 1 9. Bobby Morrow scored after catching a 30 yard pass from Jerry Murphree. In the semi-final round of the 4-A State Playoffs, the Jets ripped Butler by a score of 8-6. The Jets were underdogs in size and maybe even in talent. This had no effect on the final outcome as the big hearted Jets won the semifinals. zm The offense was led by Rick Neal and Gary White. They were less than impressive as quarterbacks, but they did one thing in excellence; they won. The Jet defense in this game was led by outstanding performers like Rick Neal, Joe Shaw, Bob Grefseng, Freddie Knighton, John Shaw, David Simmons, Danny Beck, Jerry McDonald. Along with others, they limited Butler to just 1 8 yards rushing in the first half and a net of zero yards in the second half. Jerry Murphree generated the offense with 1 1 3 yards in 26 carries. Rick Neal scored the only touchdown after being set up by Jerry McDonald ' s fumble recovery. The extra point attempt was missed with 5:48 left in the first half. Butler scored late in the third quarter and also failed to convert the extra point. With the score tied at 6-6, Butler was forced to punt from their own 33 yard line. The snap from center sailed over the punter ' s head and into the end zone. Chris Byrom of Butler chased it down and Bob Grefseng fell on him for the safety. In the championship game the Jets are once again victorious as they shut out Grissom of Huntsville with a score of 21-0. This win gave Banks its second straight state title. The contest was the 26th game the Jets had played without a loss. Jerry Murphree led the offense with 147 yards rushing in 29 carries. Joe Wahl was second with 69 yards in 1 3 carries. Managing the ball on offense was Rick Neal who quarterbacked in place of Jeff Rutledge and doubled as a linebacker. The first score came with two minutes left in the first half. Jerry Murphree took a pitch out from Rick Neal, started around end, stopped and passed to Bobby Morrow for a 31 yard touchdown. In the third quarter, Banks drove to the Grissom one yard line. Shaw ' s field goal attempt was no good. Three plays after the missed field goal, Jerry McDonald intercepted a pass and gave the ball back to the Jets on the Grissom 31 yard line. Jerry Murphree dashed in from the 27 for the score. Joe Shaw kicked and the lead was stretched to 1 4-0. Grissom attempted three plays and was forced to punt. Jerry McDonald returned the punt for an 80 yard touchdown. Shaw kicked and the defense completed the season as Grissom remained scoreless. GOO ' S LOVE For God k loved the world, that He gave Hi , only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal lite (John 3:16). 000 ' S PLAN (Christ speaking) I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly (that it might be full and meaningful) (John 10:10). Why it It that moat paopla ara not experiencing the abundant lift? Because 2 LAW TWO MAN IS SINFUL AND SEPARATED FROM GOD, THUS HE CANNOT KNOW AND EXPERIENCE GOD ' S LOVE AND PLAN FOR HIS LIFE. MAN IS SINFUL For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Man was created to have fellowship with God; but, because of his own stubborn self-will, he chose to go his own independent way and fellowship with God was broken. This self-will, char- acterized by an attitude of active rebellion or passive indif- ference, is an evidence of what the Bible calls sin. MAN IS SEPARATED For the wages of sin Is death (spiritual separation from God) (Romans 6:23). God is holy and man is sinful. A great chasm separates the two. Man is continually trying to reach God and the abundant life through his own efforts: good life, ethics, philosophy, etc. m. JINFUl MAN y Th Third Law gives ut tha only answer to thlt dllamma . . . J LAW THREE JESUS CHRIST IS GOD ' S ONLY PROVISION FOR MAN ' S SIN. THROUGH HIM YOU CAN KNOW AND EXPERIENCE GOD ' S LOVE AND PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE. HE DIED IN OUR PUCE But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners. Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). HE ROSE FROM THE OEAO Christ died for our sins . . He was buried ... He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures ... He appeared to Cephas, then to twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred . . . (I Corinthians 15:3-6). HE IS THE ONLY WAY Jesus said to him, ' I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me ' (John 14:6). ttOP [ , | God has bridged the chasm which separates us from Him by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross in our place. it it not anoufh to know that thnta law , nor even to give IntelMctual aaaant to tham i LAW FOUR WE MUST INDIVIDUALLY RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND LORD; THEN WE CAN KNOW AND EXPERIENCE GOD ' S LOVE AND PLAN FOR OUR LIVES. WE MUST RECEIVE CHRIST But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name (John 1:12). WE RECEIVE CHRIST THROUGH FAITH For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast (Ephesians 2:83). WE RECEIVE CHRIST BY PERSONAL INVITATION Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him (Revelation 3:20). Receiving Christ involves turning to God from self, trusting Christ to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us what He wants us to be. It is not enough to give intellec- tual assent to His claims or to have an emotional experience. The following is a suggested prayer: Lord Jasus, I need You. I open the door of my Ufa and receive You at my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins. Take control of tha throne of my life. Make me tha kind of person you want me to bo. Does this prayer express the desire of your heart? If it does, pray this prayer right now, and Christ will come into your life, as He promised. So much went on in such a short period of time! You know, I guess the main reason I ' m here at this school is to learn. And I ' ll have to admit it, I have learned a lot this year. The funny thing is that I didn ' t learn it all in the classroom or from my books. It ' s this strange feeling that I ' ve matured maybe, or become more aware of my surroundings. I I know one thing: I ' ve sure learned from my mistakes! ' 7 ' This year has really been one of contrasting moods for me. I ' ll go from sheer joy to depression, just like that, for no reason. I ' ve had some really rotten times, when everything just seems to get me down. i i i ' I : S ) 7f fi . s %1 tfK v h K. But you know, come to think of it, I ' ve had more than my share of good times too.
