The front page has also been revised. After changing printers a couple of times, a schedule was construed so as to allow one issue a month. With our present printer the paper must be pasted up camera-ready. This involves afternoon and night work. Although Nitty Gritty exists, THE NOTES has not given way to gossip. The staff is always trying to be journalistically conect in Its effort to please the students. Plastic Jet and the editorials balance out Nitty Gritty and Sports. Through lectures by capable speakers Sarah and I .any came back with a broader understanding of the threat of communism. Girls’ State Denise Ragland represented Banks at Girls’ State this year. With other girls from all over Alabama, she learned facts about government through mock state, city, and country elections. Youth Appreciation Award Banks Works Hard For March Of Dimes Miss March Of Dimes The students of Banks have once again done a good job of supporting March of Dimes. All projects were organized by the March of Dimes committee of Boyce Smith, Susan Allen. Maury West, and Robbie Black. Teresa Bolzle became the March of Dimes Queen by raising the most money. 194 Candidates Nominated For Mr. Banks For the contest of Mr. Banks High School, senior boys were nominated by the faculty. All who were nominated had a high scholastic average. leadership qualities, loyalty and service to Banks, honesty and dependability. and good character. In preparation for this magic moment, forty-seven girls performed their talents before three conscientious and capable judges, who later interviewed them at r-afternoon tea. 702 Garden The magic evening began with a procession of all the girls dressed in thetr evening dresses. The semi-finalists were announced and their presentation of talent followed. While the judges deliberated. Debby isley was given the title of Miss Congeniality by her admiring comrades. As the third leading scorer in the city last year Rick Neel led the Jets' running attack by picking up 116 yds. In 19 carries and scoring three touchdowns. The air attack was led by quarterback Benny Gray, who completed eight of 14 for 108 yds. and tlirec touchdowns. Jimmy Gustin was Gray's main receiver. With this victory over the Pacesetters, the Jets started their season 1-0. t 234 Jets Spear Spartans, 28-7 Some teams take longer to warm up than others, and the Mountain Brook Spartans found that out the hard way when they took on the Jets. At halftime the Jets led 7-0 with only 32 yds. rushing and four first downs. Banks warmed up the second half with two touchdowns by Rick Neel and one by Stan Johnson. Neel was the man for the Jets. He had 26 carries for 193 yds., one pass reception for 22 more, and three touchdowns. Quarterback Benny Gray threw 8 times completing three for 83 yds. 23S The Jets’ opening season two game winning streak was suddenly halted when the Jets met the West Bid Lions. Neel, the city’s leading scorer going into the game, did not score. However, he did manage to get 111 yards in 15 carries for his third 100-yard-plus game. Benny Gray made the only touchdown for the Jets and Wayne Norris kicked the PAT. 236 237 Jets Nose By Raiders, 20-13 Banks got by the Red Raiders after coming from behind twice in the second half to take a 20-13 victory. Gray plunged over from the two in the first period for the only score in the first half. Johnny Gunnels ran four yards for his first touchdown in the third period, climaxing a drive that covered 64 yds. The Jets went into the fourth quarter trailing 13-12 and quarterback Benny Gray engineered the winning touchdown from his own 21 yard line in 15 plays. Gray carried twice after that and Gunnels finally carried it in from the four for the winning touchdown. Bucs Throw Jets 23-0 Berry threw up a terrific defense against the Jets and then watted to put the game away after holding on to a 3-0 lead for three periods. The Bucs kicked a field goal in the first quarter to lead. Two Banks fumbles in the first half and three more in the second kept the Jets in hot water and for most of the evening out of Berry territory. Rick Neel intercepted two Berry passes and end Billy Shields covered a Berry fumble to help even matters. Late in the fourth quarter the Bucs made the final points ending the game with a 23-0 victory. Jackets Sting Jets 22-15 It seemed Ehslcy and Banks just could not decide who should win. Pint Banks led. then Ehsley, then Banks again. Rick Neel scored both Banks touchdowns, one in the first quarter from eight yards out and one in the fourth quarter from the two. The Jets had tacked on a safety in the third quarter, and Wayne Korns' kick following the second touchdown made it 15-14 Banks. Ehslcy recovered a Vice fumble and drove 92 yards for the winning toQchdown making the final score Ehsley 22. Banks 15. 239 Brownies Burn Jets, 35-22 When the Banks’ Jets met the Jones Valley Brownies at Legion Field the result was bound to be interesting. The Jets, who liad lost their last two games to Berry and Enslcy, were struggling to make a comeback. However, after the end of the first half the Brownies had a comfortable 21-0 lead. Nevertheless, the third quarter brought a Banks threat. By the end of the quarter, the score was 28-22 in favor of Valley. As the final gun sounded, the Brownies had scored again, defeating the Jets by u score of 35-22. leaving the Jets with a 3-3 record. 240 Homecoming Climaxed By Standoff, 7-7 Banks and Ramsay went oi each other in a way that has typified this series In the last decade; and in their banging away they left Lawson Stadium with a 7-7 tie. Decided underdogs in this one. the Jets must have sent their homecoming faithful away with some joy at seeing their favorites out-rush the Rams 114 yards to 81 yards and outpass them 65 yards to 62 yards. Quarterback Marty Graham, tailback Rick Neel, and fullback Johnny Gunnels had alternated in driving the Jets 61 yards in a dozen plays for go-ahead points, which came when Graham circled left end for the final two yards. Norris kicked the extra point for the Jets. Eight plays later, the Rams marched in the end zone and the game ended in a tic. 241 Jets Sink Vikingsr 34-15 342 When the Banki Jet met the Huffman Vikings, a game destined to be a bigger rivalry than Banks - Woodlawn in years to come, the outcome was magnificent. After the first quarter Huffman led 7-0; however, at the half Banks led 14-7 with scores by Graham and Neel. In the third quarter. Graham scored again making it 21-7. The fourth quarter brought scores for both the Jets and the Vikings. A Graham to Kenny Brown pass gave the Jets another score. Norris' kick was good, making him 4 out of 4 for PATS. Next Huffman scored and successfully completed a two point conversion, making the score 28-15. The Jets made the final score on a four yard run by Neel, assuring a 34-15 victory. Jets Power Past Colonels, 29-12 The Banks Jets rolled over Woodlawn to upset the Colonel's Homecoming game by putting on an exciting offensive show. The Jets drove in for 6 points on the opening kickoff with Norris kicking the extra point. Late in the first quarter. Neel picked up the second Banks touchdown. The big play was a 24 yard third down pass to Dennis Gallups. In the third charter. the Jets drove 90 yards with Graham going in the final yards for the touchdown. Johnny Gunnels ran 12 yards for the final Jets' touchdown in the fourth quarter. Rick Neel led in the rushing department with 120 yards in 22 carries, and sophomore Johnny Gunnels picked up 111 yards in 19 tries. Quarterback Marty Gratiam hit 10 of 15 passes for 127 yards.
