Those who did attend will say our chaplains Martha Atkins and Kathy Pearson have done their best to reach out to the students of Banks with their devotions and prayers. Students and speakers from local churches have been guests at Morning Watch. Their purpose was to provide a Christian atmosphere for medication and prayer. Morning Watch at 7:30 every morning in the choir room is just a small way for students to participate spiritually in the spirit of Banks High School. Banks initiated Parker High School into the newly enlarged city high school football family by trouncing them 55-6. The passing of Gary Rutledge and the running of Rick Neel provided much of the Banks excitement. Greg Luna, with four receptions for 61 yards and two touchdowns, was a big factor, as was the rushing of wingback Ray Thompson and fullback Eddie Brown. Neel was second to Luna in receptions with three for 46 yards. Marty Graham caught two for 15 yards. Including a touchdown. Neel rushed for 66 yards in 12 carries. Eddie Brown booted seven of eight extra tries. 240 Jets Strafe Spartans, 35-13. A strong first half put Banks over Mountain Brook at Mountain Brook stadium. The Jets literally swept the Spartans off the field the first half. Quarterback Gary Rutledge hit on six of 12 tosses for 94 yards those first two quarters, three for 57 to end Greg Luna. On scrimmage runs of 25 and 11 yards and an 80 yard punt return, Rick Neel scored three Jet touchdowns. Eddie Brown got two, one on a nine-yard smash over-center and the other on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Bubba Lott. Brown had 56 yards on seven carries and Neel had 75 yards on eight carries. 241 The Banks Jets came from behind with two second-half touchdowns to put down a battling bunch of West End Lions 14-7 at Legion Field. The Jets' powerful running attack of Rick Neel and Eddie Brown plus the second half passing wizardry of quarterback Gary Rutledge was the difference. Neel led all rustlers with 04 yards in 22 carries while Brown added 54 yards in 11 tries. Rutledge cranked up his passing arm in the second half and hit six out of eight for 74 yards. Tackles Buddy Hubble and Danny Mlkul and guards David Hester and Terr)1 Coggins did a great job opening holes up front for Neel and Brown. Banks Rallies To Defeat West End, 14-7. Jets Soar Past Ensley, 33-7. ■ % The strong passing of Gary Rutledge and Bubba Lott and some nifty running by Rick Neel sparked the Banks Jets to a 33-7 win over Ensley at Legion Field. Rutledge and 1-ott combined for 14 completions in 20 tries for the night -going 11 for 13 the second half - for a total of 187 yards. Neel, then the city's leading scorer, rushed for only 34 yards, but his kickoff and punt returns had the crowd on its feet from the opening whistle. The Jets played an exceptional defensive game. The Jet defenders allowed only seven pass completions while intercepting four Jacket passes. 243 In a hard fought defensive struggle, the Berry Buccaneers nipped the previously undefeated Banks lets 9-7. Both teams scrapped like a national title was riding on the outcome, but Berry had to do its scrapping from four points down much of the game. Rick Neel was the big man for Banks picking up 66 yards in 22 carries. He carried only once in the fourth quarter, but Tony Wagnon came in and picked up 37 yards in eight second half carries. Following a fumble on the Jet 30 yard line. Berry scored its winning touchdown with only 1:07 left in the game. 244 Gutty Jets Survive Crimson Pressure, 14-13. Two and a half minutes away from their first city loss of the season, the gutty Jets swept 74 yards on three plays for a touchdown and then tacked on two pressured points to defeat the upstart Phillips’ Crimsons 14-13 at Lawson Park. Phillips sniffed an upset when they went ahead 13-6 in the third quarter. However, this seemed only to arouse the Jets. Late in the final quarter the Jets went all the way. They moved 74 swift yards in but three plays, Rutledge passing to Pettus for 23. to Luna for 22 and Luna again down the middle and all alone for 29 and a touchdown. With 2:27 remaining, Rutledge dropped back again and hit Kenny Brown on the right for the game clinching points. There were heroes all round for the Jets: Danny Mikul, Buddy Hubble. Charlie Johnson. Marty Graham, Bubba Lott, and Eddie Brown. 24b Banks Massacres Jones Valley, 35-0. The Banks' Jets came out fighting and set down the Jones Valley Brownies, who were frustrated by penalties much of the game. The Jets scored the first four times they got their hands on the ball and finished up the night with a 35-0 win over the Brownies. Gary Rutledge hit the first five passes he threw and finished the evening with 190 yards on 13 completions in 20 tries. Rick Neel, still the city’s leading scorer, scored only once, but he paced the strong Banks rushing attack with 78 yards in 20 carries. Lance Pettus and Ray Thompson caught four passes each, Pettus for 43 yards and Thompson for 68. Greg Luna pulled in three for 54 yards and one touchdown. 246 ■ Jets Rip Rams, 28-14. Banks rode the passing of quarterback Gary Rutledge to a 28-14 victory over Ramsey at Lawson Field, overcoming a 14-0 Ram's lead at halftime that was built up with the help of a fifth down. Rutledge passed for 153 second half yards, hitting seven of 10 passes, including one for a touchdown, a six yard toss to Greg Luna. Rick Neel scored on runs of seven and eight yards. Ray Thompson scored the oilier Banks touchdown, going three yards. Rutledge threw to Eddie Brown for two points following Neel's last touchdown. Banks went ahead with two seconds left in the third quarter when Thompson went in. Neel finished with 63 yards in 23 carries to pace the Banks ground attack. Tony Wagnon netted 49 yards in seven carries. 247 Jets Rout Vikings, 40-7. Victory number 8 in nine games came the Jets’ way as they shot down Eastern rival Huffman Vikings 40-7 before more than 6,000 at Lawson Park. Quarterback Gary Rutledge, rusher Rick Neel and pass receivers Charlie Johnson, Greg Luna, and Lance Pettus smartly led the Jets in their victory. The red-thatched Rutledge amassed 282 yards of offense, completing 13 of 19 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns and scoring twice in 10 tries which netted 76 additional yards. Rutledge touchdowns came on 11 and one-yards plays, his touchdown passes on five and 34-yard tosses to Luna. Quarterback Bubba Lon drove the Jets 47 yards for a fourth period score. Lon scored from the four after sening up his touchdown with a 37 yard pass to Eddie Brown. 248 Colonels Snowbair’ Jets, 28-20. After a three year struggle, a strong Woodlawn team defeated the Banks Jets In the 1969 Crippled Children’s Clinic Game. It was a crushing ground attack that turned the trick, plus some timely help from a defensive unit that picked off a pair of Banks passes and recovered the same number of Jet fumbles. The arm of Gary Rutledge provided the Banks offense. He passed 33 times, completed 16 for 252 yards and scored twice. Rick Neel was the Jets leading rusher with 98 yards In 23 carries. Greg Luna caught 5 passes for 110 yards, Pcttus 6 for 51 yards. Banks scored its last touchdown when guard David Hester caught a deflected pass and rambled 19 yards for a touchdown. 249 FIRST ROW: Danny Slade, Gary Rutledge, Gary Little, Don Walts. Zack Manning.
