Such a person is Mrs. Elizabeth Hatch. Through her notable efforts in pep ral- lies, assemblies, and homecoming activities she proves to be one that gladly goes the extra mile and is prepared to go yet another. She has taught us to give of ourselves, to build castles given only the barest foundations, and to build mountains given only the raw iron. The whole story of this teacher will not be found here, only pieces, but pieces designed to jog a thought of remembrance, a moment of dedication. 17 Mr. Howell brings new spirit to Banks JOHN H. Fall elections this year, breaking everyday routine, set two precedents. First was the speediest campaign in Banks history. Posters went up Monday, speeches were given Tuesday and Wednesday, and the voting took place Thursday and Friday. Also for the first time in Banks ' history, a candidate for president of the student body ran unopposed. Johnny Musso polled over 1200 votes as the only unopposed candidate in this election. Students leave usual activities to elect spring officers. I 42 Morning watch starts the day right. Every school morning at seven-thirty Morning Watch is held in the choir room. Guest speakers from local churches and students provide programs which are interesting and provide spir- itual stimulation. The 1968 Banks High School Choir, under the direction of Mr. Benny Russell, remains one of the most outstanding and active organizations of the entire school. In addition to upholding the fine traditions set by past choirs, this year ' s choir has taken on even more responsibility in service. During Christmas the choir participated in the downtown Festival of Music and also sponsored its own Christmas concert. In the spring the choir was busy preparing for district and state competitions and the annual Spring Concert. Choir is dedicated to the appreciation of music. Many of our leaders are a part of choir, helping to make it even greater. The high caliber of the members, the outstanding service to Banks, and the great amount of dedication to fine music all help to make choir one of the finest organizations at Banks High School. The Notes, a member of the Alabama High School Press Association and the International Quill and Scroll Journalism Society, continues to improve, sending staff members to journalism clinics and press conferences, where they learn the art of journalism and accurate news reporting. One of the Notes ' new fea- tures this year is a symposium, or student opinion section. The job of circulating a good newspaper requires constant effort. When one edition is completed, the staff must begin work on the next edition. The reporters ' deadline is met on Thursday and is fol- lowed by a flurry of activity until the next Thursday when the editors put their paper to bed ' . The paper is distributed on Friday and the staff immediately starts working on the next edition. Robert E. Lee Generals of Montgomery de- feated the hard-defending Jets in the opening game of the season. The Jets lost with victory almost within their grasp. Banks was not faul- ty on defense, for linebacker Phil Cochran, tackles Donny Massey, Steve Lakey and Ricky Crowley and end John Howard consistently contained Lee ' s backs. With the game fought over a 6-0 route most of the way, the Jets twice threatened but lost the ball just when it appeared that they would move in. Johnny Musso, moving to quarterback for this drive, rambled 4l yards on six carries and completed three passes to Mike Rudd for 24 more yards. Banks ' deepest penetration in the second half was to the Lee 26 on a 54-yard movement. It ended abruptly on a Musso-to-Phares gain of 11 yards which was promptly fumbled away and recovered by Lee. A standing room only turnout of some 9,000 watched Banks Jets turn a pair of Minor Tiger fumbles into 28 and 35-yard touchdown drives in a 12-7 victory. Johnny Musso was credited with both Banks touchdowns — on one and 29-yards runs. For the night he totaled 115 yards in 16 tries in teaming with fullback Bob Phares in a Jet rushing offense which totaled 206 yards. Steve Lakey started Banks in for its first score by recovering a fumble at the Minor 28 in the first quarter. A pass from Rutledge to Rudd and a sprint by Musso got Banks to the one, and Musso went in from there. Crowley claimed a fumble on the Tiger 35 moments later. Phares charged six, and then Musso ran to score from 29 yards away. Outstanding on defense were safetyman Mus- so, linebacker Phil Cochran, and tackles Steve Lakey and Ricky Crowley. They bolstered a Banks defense which allowed Minor 45 yards on the ground and 86 in the air. 139 Jets pop Colonels, 13-0. The Banks Jets proved too tout;li for Wood- lawn as they downed the Colonels 13-0. The Jets put together scoring drives in the first and third periods to overpower their back- door rivals before an estimated crowd of 10,000. The Jets scored by driving 80 yards for a touchdown which was climaxed by a 28-yard pass from quarterback Gary Rutledge to wing- back Randy Pike. The situation was fourth and 10 on the Woodlawn 28 when Rutledge spot- ted Pike wide open to the left with only one Colonel defender nearby. Pike had little trou- ble streaking across for the score. After an exchange of punts opening the third quarter, the Jets were back in business at the Colonel 38. Seven plays later Johnny Musso took a pitch-out and scampered around left end for the score. Outstanding for Banks were Johnny Musso and Bob Phares, tearing up the middle of the Colonel line. Musso carried 13 times for 79 yards while Phares hit for 72 yards in 12 carries. Bob Phares hit for two yards to the 20, then Musso dashed in for the score and Fleming kicked the point. Banks ' excellent defense kept Phillips from any late scoring tries. On the Raiders ' last two possessions they were robbed of the ball by Banks interceptions. 141 Jets humiliate Rams, 27-7. The soaring Jets knocked off the Ramsey Rams, 27-7. The Rams will not doubt re- member the Banks defense, too. The Rams fin- ished the first half with minus six-yards rush- ing, no yards passing and no first downs. Johnny Musso got the credit for making the Jets go, and Phil Cochran got the credit for making the Rams stop. Cochran was the de- fensive standout throughout the game for the Jets along with Donnie Massey and others. Banks made its first score in the first quar- ter in 12 plays. Musso rushed for 26 yards and passed for 35. The final 12 yards came on a Musso to Randy Pike pass with Wayne Fleming kicking the extra point. Banks drove in for the score on the second half kickoff. The drive was carried 70 yards in 13 plays with Musso plunging the final yard and Fleming adding the extra point. Mike Neel ' s pass interception in the third quarter caused the next Banks score. Jones Valley inched by Banks in one of the tightest games ever fought at Legion Field. Johnny Musso ground out 50 yards rushing and passed for 44 more. Fullback Bobby Giradeau set up Bank ' s touchdown with a 24-yard return of a Brownie fumble. On defense — a defense that looked unbeat- able until that last drive — Banks had several outstanding stars. Phil Cochran, Donnie Mas- sey, and John Howard will be remembered by the Brownies. When the Jets had to make three goal line stands, the Brownies were only able to score on one. The Jets ' score came on Jones Valley ' s first possession of the second half. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter Rutledge passes and a 15 yard penalty moved the ball to the 21 and five plays later Musso went in from the four. Fleming ' s point was good to make it 21-0 with eight minutes left in the game. The last touchdown came on a 75-yard drive with Musso going the final 15 yards.
