I can truthfully say . The word “great is used so often in the teenager’s vocabulary that it has a tendenev to lose its meaning and heroine trite. Exciting games are great; new hairdos look great: good grades make one feel great. Sometimes, however, this little five-letter word is the only adjective forceful enough to describe someone fully. Such i the case at hand. What other word could pertain to someone who has the versatility to publish a school newspaper, head the schedule committee, sponsor the Senior Class. and teach five English classes a day in the -ame year? W hat other modifier could possibly apply to mie who has been an excellent teacher, a patient guide, and a true friend to her pupils? Great has never been more correctly used than in referring to Mrs. Grace L Wails. 4 With respect, admiration, friendship, and love, the 1963 Contrails is dedicated to Mrs. Grace Waits. 5 Dear Diary, Here are my teachers. Although all of us at Banks have thought of them at one time or another as only “necessary evils,' they are earnestly trying to prepare us to step into our places as leaders of the community, die state, and even the nation. •l MR. Mississippi State University Dear Diary. This year at Banks began for me as all years have in the past—with exhaustion at the thought of returning to the “old grind’ and mass confusion in the scramble for classes. But. there was a difference—a physical change, of course, in that we had a beautiful new addition to our building—however, I couldn't exactly put my finger on the real difference. It was a new feeling—that of l eing a Senior. 15 Fall Seniors JAMES HARRY ACTON B-Football; Varsity Football; R-Club; Spike Shoe Club; Secretary of J. Fred Muggs Club; Matli Club. The thrill of pep rallies; the excitement of cheering our team on, win or lose; and the feeling of being a pail of a school effort, whether actually participating or supporting the team by your attendance, all go to make up the sense of pride we have in our school. The stubborn defense of the Banks Jets proved too powerful for the West End Lions from the opening kirk off to the closing whistle. At the half neither team had scored, but in the early minutes of the third quarter Banks got their break. West End tried to move the ball on a fourth and one situation. They fell only inches short, but the ball now belonged to Banks. James Hardin moved seven yards in two tries: Chambliss, with a fake pass, moved twelve. Greg Henry moved three yards and Hoot Jacks’ 23-yard pass from Chambliss put us on the one yard line. Chambliss went over for the first of two scoring plays. The second score for Banks was again the result of a West End fourth and one situation, lorn Epps. Hardin, and Stanley Summerford set up the final score of the game, which was certainly . . . Thr perfect ending for a perfect homecoming. TIME TO PUT a aa WE5TEND BANKS □ OWN YD5-TD-G0 THE BIRMINGHAM NEWS nilABTFR A OPERATED QV UUAK I Cn A THE NEWS AMONGST HERALD BALL ON 49 YATraNE 57 The score was 7-0 in I he second quarter of the Banks vs. Bessemer game, and the half-time seemed might) grim to Banks students. Then came the third quarter and the -tor) changed. Starting from our own 26-vnrd line. Banks marched steadily down the field. Stan Summcrford carried 3 times for 23 yards; Dan Chambliss passed twice to Sumuterford for 15 yards, ami after II plays. Dan Chambliss threw a pass 6 yards to End 3'oin Epps. The score was 7-6. Banks then kicked off to Bessemer. On the following play the Bessemer Tigers fumbled and Banks recovered the bail on the 25 yard line. In the following plays Dan Chambliss carried for two: Hoot Jacks caught a pass for 15 yards: and Fullback James Hardin carried the ball for 6 and then scored the touchdown from the two yard line. The score was now 12-7. The Banks Jets defense did a great job. Two times the Jets held Bessemer when they were on our five yard line. Banks intercepted two Bessemer passes and recovered one Tiger fumble. It was a great game, but the l e«t part of all was the final score. BESSEMER Banks just couldn't get their defense going and as a result we lost to Shades Valiev, 7-0. The forward wall of the Mountie line was the strongest defense Banks had run up against all season. In the first quarter. Shades Valiev drove deep into Banks territory twice, only to l c stopped by an aroused Jet defense. Just before the half, the Mounties inarched 58 yards for a touchdown. The conversion was good and the Mounties led by seven points. The second half was all defense, with the Jets showing they. too. knew how to play defensive football. With time running out. Banks started one last drive. Quarterback Bobby Johns hit End Tom Epps for 15 yards. Greg Henry caught a Johns pitchout for 37 yards to the Mountie 21. The next pass was incomplete stopping the clock with two seconds remaining. On the last play. Johns threw a pass which looked good, but a driving interception ended the game. Hoot Jacks kept the Mounties well within their own territory with 5 punts for an average of -10 yards. 58 SHADES VALLEY In the first eleven minutes of the foot kill game, Ramsey made two touchdowns ami dealt the Jets a blow from which they never quite recovered. Even then, however, the Jets continued to fight. At one period in the game Banks narrowed the score to 13. Then Canterbury scored a third touchdown, and Goolsby returned a Banks punt to make it four. Banks made fifteen first downs to Ramsey’s seven, and Banks made 183 yards on the ground to Ramsev’s 195 yards. Ramsey intercepted a Banks pass, hut they were unable to move the hall against a tough Jet defense. Ramsay punted and Banks received the hall on our own 1 I yard line. James Hardin, fullback, and halfbacks Stan Summcrford and Greg Henry made steady gains, and Junior quarterback Bobby Johns engineered the touchdown drive. Stan Summcrford went over from the six-yard line for paydirt. The con-version attempt by Greg Henry was good. Banks' honors for the night vent to James Hardin as leading ground gainer. Ramsay For the first time in history the LEE GENERALS pulled bv and defeated the BANKS JETS. The upsetting score was 29 to 6. Although the Lee Generals have been state champs three years in less than a decade it was not until this fateful Friday night that they were able to boast a victory over the Banks Jets. For three periods the Generals hail a shutout, but late in the final quarter Banks went 31 yards for points following a pass interception by Donnv Johnston. Quarterback “Beetle” Bailey, after setting things up with a 17 yard run. got the Jet TD on a plunge in from the one-yard line. Warren, of Lee. made the first touchdown and soon followed it with an 18 yard field goal. Dickie Waite was the third scorer for Lee. making six points from the one. Byrd anrl Kwater were responsible for the two scores that ended the game 29 to 6. The entire Banks third string is to be commended for their remarkable showing. 59 The Jets struck quickly, took an early lead from Phillips and kept it until the finish. The Jet defense played best in the first quarter, keeping Phillips in their own territory. The Jets took charge of the opening kickoff and the game, when after fourteen tries and 79 yards, James Hardin went the final 5 yards and scored. Greg Henry converted and Banks was ahead 70. Bobby Johns returned a Phillips quick kick and ran it back to the Phillips 32, Hardin then ran 23 yards to the 9. On the next play Chambliss hit Hardin in the end zone with a 9 yard pass. The extra point was good. Phillips scored in the second In-fore the half hut missed the extra point after receiving a 5 yard penalty. At the beginning of the half. Banks took over the ball only to lose it because of a fumble. Phillips took advantage of this and after driving 91 yards in seventeen plays, scored. It was the second score of the game for Propst of Phillips. The conversion was good and the score stood Banks 14-Phillips 13. The final score of the game was made by Banks after the kickoff was brought to the 36 yard line. After marching 64 yards, the score was finally made on a Chambliss to Tom Epps pass. Greg Henry made his extra points a perfect three out of three. Hardin and Henry were the Jet workhorses with Glenn Turner and Rex Walker backing them up. Phillips W ood Lawn The Woodlawn Colonel scored the first time they had the hall. An attempted Jet Comeback was unsuccessful. The Jets couldn't move the hall against a tough Colonel line, led by the running and passing of Tommy Garrison. After Woodlawn returned the opening kickoff to the Jet 47 yard line. Garrison engineered a drive to the Bank one. Woodlawn had a first and goal. Although the Jet defense made a valiant stand, holding the Colonels to the fourth down, Garrison hit paydirt and the score stood 60. Greg Henry put Woodlawn in trouble with j tremendous 70 yard quick kick to the Woodlawn one foot line. Andy Muglack was tackled by Paige Cutcliffc in the end zone for u safety and our first two point . Woodlawn received the second half kickoff and quickly made another touchdown. The extra point failed once more. The third touchdown was made soon after the second, with Jerry Garrison going over for the score. The conversion made it 19-2. The Jet , however, did not give up as Bank took the kickoff and moved goal ward, with Henry leading the way. With the ball on the 39, Bobby John threw a pa to end Hoot Jack who caught it on the Colonel 1. Henry went over the defensive line for 6 more points. Johns converted and the Jets trailed 19-9. One !a t Woodlawn touchdown, a 27 yard Garrison to Mike Nines pass, ended all hope of a final Bank rally. The game ended 25-9 in favor of the Colonels of Woodlawn. Bobby Johns and Greg Henry were standout for Banks. B-Team Football Squad Perhaps one of the hardest jobs of coaching is the job of teaching Freshman hoys the fundamentals of football. The 1962 version of the Blue Jet Band was the largest in history. It was composed of seventy-two playing members, eight majorettes, three flag hearers, one head majorette and one drum major. All members of the band, majorettes and flag bearers as well, are playing members of the concert band. A typical season finds this organization marching over 1 1.000 man miles, or over halfway around the world in preparation of its shows. This group will expend some 13.021.168,180 foot pounds during the course of a season. Because of its superior performance during the football season, the Banks Blue Jet Band was selected to represent Birmingham in the Inauguration Parade of George Wallace. Januarv M. 1962. After the marching season is over, the hand is bus) preparing serious music for concerts, festivals, and contests. Another first at Bunks—GRASS! . . . and then I went into his office crying and telling him how hard I work. She always was a pain in the neck! l’--t! Gin you smell the Ulistosol Powder in my shoe? No dear. Certs is a breath mint. Let go of me and stomp that spider! 178 You don't fool me a bit; I can smell your Aqua-Velva. . . . und then she said. “What were you doing at the hospital with Tommy Bailey?” Any high school has ils share of young love, and Banks was no exception in 1963 as these snapshots illustrate. Parties, dates, dances, or a thouJhnd and one little occasions at school helper! keep romance in bloom. The names of persons involved here arc unimportant, for they could represent any one of 1.500 students. The significant fact is that the honest fun and affection between boy and girl did flourish at Banks this year. This I’ll remember — Do you think the student!! will find out about last Saturday night? Hurry, F hear a J. Fred Muggier Now see what a modeling course can do is coming to claim this for the hank! for you, girls? ... I'll also remember the hours of fun included in 1963 at Banks. The practical joke that back fired, the lunchroom get-together with friends, the fun-filled pep rally, the Jets’ Jubilee, the session room party at Christmas, or just the daily conversation with my pals—these are hut a few occurrences that are pleasant to the memory.
