SLATE1942 Bill of Rights Issue VOLUME FOURTEEN Published bythe Slate Staff of Bangor Hig School BANG.oR, PENNSYLVANIA FQREWORD DEDICATION FAC U LTY SENIORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES ADvI2R'rISExII5NTS Two 4'455f Table of Contents 3 5 6 9 45 49 65 Foreword The Bill of Rights, our central theme, brings to the minds of the members of The Slate Staff the four freedoms for which our country is fighting to protect - speech, press, religion and assembly. This last thought we wish to leave with the youth of the graduating class, that they may go forward to pro- tect, cherish, guard. and defend these, our inalienable rights. it W-7 THREE lmit to right: Ifi-ed Ifiulilwim-r, Robert Ivzxvit-s. Imnivl Milli-xx Bangor School Board During the past year our school board has ac- complished many things that serve to advance and further our school district in education, Regarding our physical plant, the school board has launched a program to improve the lighting, floor- ing, heating and painting. The curriculum has been liberalized through correspondence courses and a special course in drama. The health of our students has been given attention through a full tuberculosis program, audiometric testing, and the Eames Eye test. Teacher salary increments for advanced train- ing is continued. Mathematics projects were approved to discover adjustments for individual needs. The elementary field has conducted an integrated program in English and social studies on Latin-American re- lations. It is for these fine and splendid things that the students of Bangor School District Wish to thank their School Board. Foun 4-QQ Dedication For his many great services and his unbounded interests as a member of the faculty of Bangor High School, we, the Class of l942, with sincere appreci- ation, dedicate this issue of the SLATE to Mr. Arnold P. Wynne. As the literary adviser of the SLATE, Mr. Wynne has been largely responsible for pulling our publication from out the sluggish depths into which it had fallen and converting it into a snappy, first- rate magazine. The boys in the Hi-Y have for several years known him as their faithful and inspiring adviser. He has given his untiring support and acute attention to every sport, every athletic event ever held by this high school. Our athletes have known his encourage- ment, and he has served as a model for them in every respect. Now, in our country's time of need, Mr. Wynne has volunteered his services to our armed forces. There is no doubt that everyone in Bangor High School will miss him next year. But we know that he will devote himself to his duty as a soldier with the same zeal which distinguished him as a teacher. We are sure that Bangor's loss will be our coun- try's gain. 9555?-7 Favs Third How: Mr. J. NYilliams, Mr. Pollen, Mr. O'Ho1'a, Mr, A. XYillizxms, Mr. livitns, Mr. Tlmiiius Mi XX 'yi111e, Mr. Iless. Senior Class History Contrary to the usual custom we organizcd our freshman class with the largest enrollment ever known in the history of Bangor High School, Our social events for that year were a skating party and a memorable Halloween party, During our sophomore year we saw more participation in clubs and became accustomed to the gayiety of extra-curricular activities. Another party entertainment consisted of a balloon basketball game, a treasure hunt and relay races. Things really began to happen in our junior year for now we were to start our reign of successes. A Thanksgiving dance, which turned out to be a gala event. attracted hundreds of people. When the new class rings started Hashing we began to realize how near at hand our Junior Banquet was. On May 23 our big moment had at last come. Will our teachers ever forget those colorful kerchiefs? Our senior dance was held on Thanksgiving and the spotlight was focused on Indian motif. On April 9 and 10, What A Life the Senior play was presented in the high school audi- torium and once again our co-operation resulted in a great success. The class gift, consisting of lighting fixtures for six rooms in the old building, was accepted with gratitude by the School Board. Then came the grand finale of our high school days. the Senior Banquet held at Buck Hill lnn on May 1, 1942. Without realizing it our four years had come to an end. TEN fmxfg ROBERT E. The next event was our Christmas dance. The dance brought in a large profit which will help towards our school gift. In January we received our class rings. A Whaling good assembly program opened up our Sophomore year. It was given to the Junior and Senior High School on November 6 and 7, respectively. The main feature, a true masterpiece, was a playlet called They Gave Us Freedom, written by our class adviser, Mr. Von Mauger, and en' acted by our own up-and-coming young starlets. CToo bad there were no talent scouts aroundl. Piano selections were given by more of our future Paderewskis. The Sophomore trio, made up of Janet Arnts, Dolores Schneebeli, and Cora Moose, showed real musical inclinations. ln December, we class members had a ripping good time at our 'Christmas party, held in the high school auditorium for the members of the Sophomore class and their guests. We members of the Sophomore Class of 1941-42 deeply appreciate the effort and guidance of our adviser, Mr. Von Mauger, for his help through the year. Mx FORTY-SEVEN Freshman Class Since the freshman class did not organize this year, nothing has been accomplished by us as a group. We did, however, despite the lack of organi- zation, plan and hold a successful dance in the spring of the year for the beneiit of the Red Cross. Forzrv-Elem K-or-iff GDUD cfiilifirz The Slate Staff Journalism caught us by the collar in September. Deadlines glared at us three times this year. Proof-reading was a job none of us preferred, but everyone shared. We looked at blank pieces of paper forlornly. Mr. Wynne said, 'AWrite. We wrote. We proof-read. We pub- lished. After all the year's grind, experience, and fun, we regret to let journalism's hold on us go. - EDITORS Sidney Monas Recia Sobelson LITERARY Rose Ninno, Editor: Evelyn Miller, Vivian Pritchard. Members chosen from each home room by election of the pupils themselves must be in the upper bracket of the class scholastically. The purpose of the club is to represent the students in all matters concern- ing student government and student activities. The Hrst action of the club this year was the publishing and selling of handbooks which contained all the necessary information about the school and its activities. The greatest achievement of the Student Council this year was the procuring of the privilege of having evening Social Hours. Besides these two main accomplishments there were many other minor achievements which were made for the benefit of our school. The members ol' the Student Council wish to thank their adviser, Mr. Stirling C. Schmoyer, for his invaluable guidance. War Workers are asked to speed up production to the fullest. Others must help through the regular purchase of War Savings Stamps and Bonds. And to the farmers of Northampton County comes the call for more eggs, more milk and more meat. The Flory Milling Company is proud of the part it is playing in helping these farmers produce more for Uncle Sam. Flory Poultry, Dairy and Stock Feeds have been streamlined to produce maximum results with minimum feed- ing costs. lf you are not feeding Flory Feeds now, it will pay you to try them and compare them with any other feeds. On the basis of results alone, we are sure you will soon agree that Flory Feeds are equal to any, yet they cost you less than many. -nun: X mann A 0 POULTRY FEEDS I E DAIRY FEEDS l X n w . pg sToCK FEEDS f HoRsE FEEDS 7 X xf LORY ILLING COMPANY Established 185 3 BANGOR, PENNSYLVANIA TEL.
